The 800B is probably the total cost for all the planned Ford class carriers, not just one. Also includes the R&D cost and cost of maintenance for the life of the fleet. The cost you usually see on military stuff is like that. Its all just a guesstimation tho, its just a round about number. Or the 800B could be the cost of the ship + all aircraft/weapons on board.

I was an American service member stationed at an R.A.F base in England for two years. We had a massive amount of military hardware ready to not only protect our own interests, but those of our allies as well. This carrier will not only protect America, but also the United Kingdom and our other friends.

The $800 billion figure is its entire operating budget for the next 50 years, including crew, etc. It cost slightly over $13 billion to design and build. No mention of Queen Elizabeth or Prince of Wales from GB? Also, a note about China: they have 3 carriers but the first one is not combat rated, and never will be. It is a retread of a Soviet designed Kusznetsov class, built by Ukraine, and the second one is iffy.

A decade to produce a single aircraft carrier is astonishingly fast. Another astonishing ship-building tid-bit: During World War II, eighteen American shipyards built 2,710 Liberty ships between 1941 and 1945 (an average of three ships every two days), easily the largest number of ships ever produced to a single design.

The Russians only have one carrier, the Admiral Kuznetsov, and, it has been laid up, in drydock, for the last two years. Every time it put to sea, it had to be towed back to port by the tug that always had to accompany it.

How many do you need, Daz asked? Depends what you want to do. Aircraft carriers are needed to project power in places where you don't have airfields. In recent years, the UK has not really been projecting military power much beyond Europe and the Mediterranean basin. If it intends to support NATO on the region's northern and southern flanks, it might need one or, better, 2 carriers. If it intends to have any involvement in the Pacific in support of anglosphere countries like Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and so on, it might need a third.

For fixed-wing aircraft, Russia's Admiral Kuznetsov carries 18 Su-33s and six MiG-29Ks, China's Liaoning carries 24 Shenyang J-15s, and China's Shandong carries 32 Shenyang J-15s; none of these are V/STOL.

In the event of World War III, the United States will do everything it can to assist in the defense of its NATO allies and its Major Non-NATO allies, but will likely have to prioritize taking Cuba off the map ahead of that, since Cuba could offer Russia and/or China a stepping stone from which to attack the US Gulf coast, and New Orleans is probably the key for any adversary to defeating the United States, due to its position being the location where the Mississippi River meets the Intracoastal Waterway and approaches the sea. The United States will probably need to give the highest priority during such a war to keeping enemy powers the hell out of the Gulf of Mexico.

China has only 2 aircraft carriers and the newest they spoke of is still being outfitted. America has 12 with 2 more Gerald Ford class being built. There is no country with the budget to build more than 2 to 4 at most. Only the U.S. has the funding to build so many. The U.k. has 2 carriers. So China can try to match the U.S. in ships and aircraft but will never have the ability to out build the U.S.

France has been a useful US ally against Islamist terrorism in its former colonial empire in Africa. I'm not sure if an aircraft carrier would ever have any value there, but control of the Mediterranean basin in the event of NATO direct involvement in a European war will be important. Also, the French proved the limitations of their military in Libya not so long ago. That war was largely a French/Italian adventure and they showed they couldn't do it with their own resources so they had to call to the US for help. A new, more capable carrier, might have made a difference.
