Americans Try Tan Y Castell Welsh Cakes
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Last year we had the opportunity to try Welsh cakes made in the US and we really loved them. Our viewer Richard sent us some from Tan Y Castell Bakery in Pembrokeshire, Wales.

You should have a go at making them as they're super easy to make and like Scones the fresher they are the better, warm off a griddle they're amazing, with sultanas/currants is the normal way we have them and always with butter, when I was a kid my mum and grandmother would always make Welsh Cakes and drop scones together in batches on the griddle, dropped scones are actually very similar to small American style pancakes just to confuse people, and also eaten with just butter.
Yes that is right. My mother always made two batches. One with currants and one plain with jam. My children always scoffed the jam ones and left the others for the adults😊.
Yes they need heating and smothered in butter. Traditionally the are fried in a frying pan an eaten warm, my grandma made them all the time. Tan y Castell translates as under the castle. These are piled high in my local shop here in North Wales. Home made ones are of course superior, I personally like them slightly burnt!! This particular brand are made in Narberth, a small village in South West Wales.

We've enjoyed them with butter and sugar. Hope you had a nice time in Florida.
Home made Welsh cakes are the best. Especially plain ones with jam in the middle. We do not usually add anything to welsh cakes. The flavour itself should be enough. As fir mass produced ones Y bwthyn in Llandeilo is the best. Especially the jam ones. But ofc locally made ones and home made ones are even better

So they are made with the jam already in them rather than added later?
I would suggest you try making your own. Very quick and easy to make them, you will need a cast iron skillet to cook them. There are loads of videos on youtube showing you exactly how to do it. You should have a batch ready in 10-15 minutes. Recipes vary a lot more traditional recipes may use the Welsh name "pice ar y maen" and will be cooked on a planc (a cast iron bakestone) i cook them on a 16 inch round 3/4 inch thick planc sprinkle them with sugar and eat as they are. Some people add butter and occassionally jam but that tends to be with lower quality ready made very dry and bland tasting ones like the tan y castell ones you had fresh ones are in a different league and do not need anything added.

@@miguelperez-gb5kr thank you.
“…put a little butter on…??” - hellooooooooo, can I politely advise you of the specific “quantity of butter” on a Welsh Cake?? Toast or “griddle” your Welsh Cake so it’s toasty hot - then grab about HALF A POUND’S worth of your butter “sticks” 😉😂 (our butter comes in tubs!) cut butter sticks into manageable “slices” and place as many slices as you can fit into that small circle of lusciousness until it melts…then add a few more for luck….smooth the melty butter over until the Welsh Cake absorb no more, then holding the plate close to you, carefully life the Welsh Cake and direct it to your mouth (make sure Ross hasn’t put one of his posh shirts on!) bite in and enjoy… The added vitamins and extra calcium quotas in that butter is really good for your health, so have no worries about ant other unfavourable dietary nonsense ….. 🥺🤫🤭
