Americans Try DURIAN in Singapore - World's SMELLIEST Fruit

We tried Durian for the first time in Geylang, Singapore!
Often referred to as the "king of fruits" in South East Asia, Durian is known for it's strong odor, described by many as smelling like rotten onions, bad body odor, and raw sewage. Despite all of this, we decided to give it a taste!

@Thirsty Cup dude. Durian is a love it or hate it kind of fruit. Let them have a taste of what it is like first before they move on to the premium stuff. What's the point of going for premium durian for the first time if they don't even know if it's to their taste or not.

For the first time I eat this it was so hmm... but the more often that I try it, it became more delicious after and after. Now I'm so excited in that fruit that I never will miss that experience that I've made by trying this. Don't be shy cause of the other ugly clips. Just try it and give it a chance. Be curious!

I have an english friend that actually puked after eating durian. He bought a packaged durian quite similarly to those in london. It was durian from Malaysia. He sworn not to eat them again. When he came to Malaysia i forced him to eat durian one more time but not the packaged ones but freshly cut and he said it taste loads better and ate a lot. You see durians if you noticed are very gassy fruit. You get bloated after eating only few bites of them. And they ferment really easy. The ones inside the fruit and especially the ones that are freshly picked aren't taste or smell that bad.

I lived in this part of the world where i eat durian since young. Personally i like it very much, but my younger brother hate it. So it is the kind of fruits that has its own fans and haters. A poetic way to describe it is, it is a true tyrant, and dictator among fruits, which dominate with strong and unapologetic smell and taste, that either win you over or send shiver down your spine.

Do not think of durian as a typical fruit that is sweet, juicy and refreshing. Think of it as a type of bittersweet custard. Different durians have diff tastes. Some are more sweet and soft, some may be more firm and more bitter sweet, as if Brandy has been infused in it. Props to the both of you for trying and not wretching and making exaggerated expressions.

Then I came home to Vietnam and my Mom told me "Do Not smell it...just hold your nose and swallow a big bite" and so I did. A few months later I tried it again and it tasted good, and I love it after that and eat it every chance I had regardless how expensive for it worths the money!!!

Available in China, all the way to Singapore, Indonesia, Japan, Hong Kong, Australia etc. Most expensive cultivar is in Thailand. The best and most expensive fruits are reserved for the royalty. Follows by about sgd 20 to 32 per kg in Singapore. The per kg weight includes the whole fruits with a yield of 15 to 30% of the total weight, are the yellow flesh and brown seed. So it's very very expensive if you buy the fresh durians as you only get to eat about 5% (yellow flesh of the fruit) of the total weight.

Bravo for trying. The smell is the primary obstacle - odour to those who hate it, aroma to those who do. The texture is soft almost custard-like. Next thing to know, is there many different genus/varieties, and they taste different - ranging from bitter-sweet to sweet with some a tinge of coconuty or alcohol flavour. If you’re still in town, PM me, I’ll be happy to offer some explanation and join you for another tasting session. But again, bravo for trying.

I tried eating durian while in Singapore. Its banned in many places due to the strong smell. It smells like sweaty arm pits with the odor smelling like it was using steroids for performance enhancement. I am saying the odor is super strong. I suggest to eat in pieces you can put into your mouth without touching around your lips. I tried many soaps and hand sanitizer on my face but I could not wash away the smell thank god it was gone when I woke up the next day. When you first taste durian it smells bad but it is soft . It reminded me of pudding and I was not sure what to think of it but after the first bite it tastes good but still that smell is a hard trade off. In Malaysia and Singapore Durian is hugely popular. In Singapore, They make many durian flavored desserts, breads, ice creams etc its everywhere ....where its not banned. :) I only ate a little bit due to the shock of it and its quite expensive in Singapore. I would eat again or give it another try, some people love it but for me I don't like the smell so much even when its made into desserts.

I'm Singaporean & I sometimes like durian & I sometimes dislike it. Why? Because durians are like wine. Just as there are different types of white wines and red wines, there are different types of durians that have different taste profiles. So while some people may like a sweeter durian, some might like a more bitter durian. Just like how some people prefer a sweeter wine or something more dry. It'll be easier to understand and appreciate durians, if you think of it like appreciating wines. Different types of durians have different textures and moisture levels, so some durians might have more watery flesh, while others have meatier firmer flesh, and others are in-between. Some durians have big seeds, while others have more flesh and tiny seeds. That's why it's hard to pin down the durian tasting experience exactly. It would be like asking a person who's tasting wine for the first time and doesn't know anything about it what he thinks of it. It makes a difference if he's tasting a merlot or a pinot noir, a chardonnay or a riesling. So to be a durian connoisseur, you'd probably have to try as many different types of durian as possible, then maybe you'll find something that you prefer.

Best way to eat durian for the first time is to try the good ones; otherwise you may get durians that may be spoilt or rancid. A good guide is the price. Good ones are not cheap and they are not opened and displayed in boxes. Get fresh ones.

I love eating durian despite the strong ''pungent'' smell that some people hate it. And I also enjoy sharing this with friends and family. The good durians like Mao Shan Wang can be really expensive. For durian lover like me, I prefer fresh by eating the fruits from the husk. After eating, you can actually drink some water added with salt to cool off , best is to drink that from the durian husk. There is a scientific explanation.

Great Video. I am from the UK and first tried Durian when I was travelling in Thailand a few years back. Yes the smell was not good and its best to eat it outside!...In fact most hotels will have a NO DURIAN sign inside the hotel due to the smell. But the taste was wonderful and creamy. It has become one of my favourite fruits in SE Asia. Everyone should try it at least once....I am sure that beside the smell most people will like it's taste.

No offence to Thai, to Malaysian and Singaporean, Thai Durians are considered not the 'real thing'. The taste and odour is considered totally boring and not worth the while, too bland to the point of unpalatable. We are also put off by the firm and fibrous texture, which Thais like. There are no demand and market for Thai Durian in Malaysia and Singapore. If one has tried Thai Durian, he must try Malaysian Durian. It will change the perception totally. One will either turn and love it or hate it intensely.

if you try mao shan wang you would have a great first try experience. Seasonal breed. You can get them between May to August. Theyre more on the pricey side. Anywhere between $15-$28 a box. Theyre creamy, sweet and very fragrant. Cheaper durians do have that bitter, oniony, sharper taste to it which is available all year round. I just got my hands on 3 boxes of mao shan wang myself.
