I always find it amusing that many Americans, upon smelling and tasting Prawn Cocktail crisps for the first time, are so convinced that they can smell and taste the fishy "shrimp", when it's actually based on the (Marie Rose) sauce used in British Prawn Cocktails and doesn't contain any fishy tasting ingredients (predominantly Ketchup and Mayo). Amazing how much the expectation can effect the experience. I've seen the same phenomenon with Americans trying Bourbon biscuits for the first time and insisting that they can taste the Alcohol, when Bourbon biscuits don't have anything to do with Bourbon Whiskey.

    Ай бұрын

@garlichr it's true but not for the reasons they gave. Essentially, pretentious elitist snobbery is the main reason anyone in the UK extends a pinkie. Folks from outside the UK who aren't familiar with the nuances, then think by doing this they'll be seen as classy. For 95% of the UK and Ireland, people really couldn't care less if you do or don't extend a pinkie. Nobody here usually does. The big divisions in the UK are more about social class. The majority of the UK are not the Downton Abbey aristocracy. That particular group is less than 1% of the population and not representative of the country. In essence, it would be akin to folks coming to the USA and greeting folks with "howdy pardna, rootin tootin yeehaw". Yes those words are found in some American media. But generally those set in the west over 100 years ago. The vast majority of Americans never say rootin tootin, or suffering succotash. Some may find it amusing, or baffling, and some may even feel it's a really inaccurate maybe even offensive portrayal (I'm not American so I can't say either way). The pinkie thing, hey if you wanna do it, go for it, you paid for the drink after all. But it will make you stand out. Its not at all a normal thing to do. Most won't say anything. And like the earlier example, most will be bemused or confused. Despite the popularity of the UK period dramas, most of us are more like.... what's her face, the lady in that cutlery scene in....Pretty Woman? Most of us are equivalent to maybe what the USA calls blue collar? So, we don't have formal etiquette things. Hell, half the time when WE imitate that kinda thing, it's usually incorrect and usually tongue in cheek mockery. Personally? If you're here, and you wanna do ur pinkie thing for a cute photo. Fuck it, go for it. Have a laugh. It's just a drink. You're not hurting anyone. If you're polite and friendly and appreciative to staff, I think that's what 99% of folks actually care about. If folks are gonna judge you for not being intimately familiar with archaic rules from 150 years ago, then maybe they're not the kinda person you'd want to be around. Plenty of far far worse things in the world to sort out. Food and drink are a core part of a culture. If there's genuine respect, then why can't folks goof about a bit? Just cuz We're adults don't mean we need to sombre sullen formal 24/7. Especially over something petty like a nice brew.

One thing i noticed, particularly with the Choccie Orange, is that's not British. That's American-made I'm pretty sure. The packaging is far plainer for a start. You may think, well isn't it still the same thing? You'd think so but no. Lemme use reverse example. The Big Mac in the UK, it's not made with the same ingredients. Some of the ingredients are outright illegal here. And the tastes folks are used to are different too. Plus, when Supersize Me and some of the big scandals came out, the main ways the large fast food giants were able to not haemorrhage customers was essentially competing with each other on quality. "We are healthier because we only use XYZ fresh ingredients unlike our rivals". So the beef, the cheese, the eggs, the lettuce, the tomatoes, all need to comply with much stricter regulations, which DOES impact taste. Going back to the chocolate, milk in the USA is treated in a number of ways to aid in transportation. Which changes the taste of chocolate. To folks in the UK, Hershey's taste of puke/sick/vomit. And it actually does, literally. That milk souring means more butyric acid forms. It's what makes parmesan cheese and feet have their particular odours and is also the reason that vomit smells the way it does. In the UK, the entire country is slightly smaller than i think Illinois. The distances from dairy farm, to chocolate factory, to the entire country of consumers is far far shorter. Hershey didn't have that "everything is around the corner" advantage. So Americans just grew up with chocolate always tasting that particular way. So, you may get UK chocolate brands being made under license in the USA, but they're made with American ingredients, and the American taste market in mind. Now that doesn't mean it's bad. Different strokes for different folks. But it does mean that you're not tasting British chocolate. But American chocolate with a British vibe. Henry Walker in 1948 set up Walker's in the UK. In 1989 it was bought by PepsiCo who owned Frito Lay's. Until the 1950s, all crisps (crispy chips of potato is why they're called that) were plain. Scientific food chemistry discoveries allowed flavours to be added. Cheese and Onion (from the Ploughman's lunch) and Salt and Vinegar (the 2 condiments used for fish & chips). The Lay's logo is from the early 1990s Walker's logo Finally, prawn is the word we use for shrimp. Walker's 3rd flavour, Prawn Cocktail, isn't actually prawn/shrimp flavour. It's Marie Rose sauce flavour. A prawn cocktail was cooked prawns in Marie Rose sauce, also known as cocktail sauce. So it's "tomato, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce and lemon juice with some black pepper" flavour. In terms of what Worcestershire sauce (wuss-tuh-shuh wuss rhyme with puss, and the rest rhyme with unstressed "the") is Main ingredients Malt vinegar, spirit vinegar, anchovies, tamarind, garlic, onions, molasses, sugar, salt, spices, flavourings

next time you get a bag of salt and vinegar crisps, pop the bag then crush the chips... then make a cheddar cheese sandwich and put the broken chips in the sandwich... (spread butter on the sandwich) monster much i put in a food processor to smash them to bits, then take cream cheese ball (the size of a medium gum ball) on a cocktail stick and roll the cheese around in the munch bits... the issue is with UK food is that the food standards are really strict, so we have to make our chips child freindly, so anything you would think will be strong or hot isnt, also we dont use as many chemicals in food as the US, for example US bread has sugar in it where the UK we hardly use any... same for preservatives your food is full of them where as UK restricts what we add to foods products. as for the chocolate orange i like to make a orange sponge cake, place the segments whole in the cake batter and then bake... let cool and the carve up into slices and enjoy with fesh cream or whipped cream, icecream or custard.

Don't think I've ever seen an American like Twiglets. The usual reaction is "ew it tastes burnt". Not my snack of choice but I'll eat them if they are there. They're ok.
