    When Americans say they grew up on Hersheys, it breaks my heart. I'm German and I was almost starstruck when I first held a Hershey's kiss in my hands. Imagine my disappointment when I then ate it and it tasted like dirt. :')

    I had a friend bring back chocolate from Germany when I was in high school. She gave me a bar and my world exploded into an incredible flavor I had never tasted before. German chocolate is the absolute best. My daughter has always been a chocolate fan, but she’s mainly grown up on American chocolate. She loves kinder eggs, but t’s my dream to find her some authentic German chocolate and have her try it. If you have any recommendations of what name brand of chocolate to get and where to buy it that delivers to California, I would be ever so grateful! ☺️

In Europe we 'temper' the chocolate which changes the chemical constituency and reduces the butyric acid to almost nothing. If you have grown up with it, it's the taste you know but every one of my husband's family and friends, once they have tasted European chocolate, will never go back. Dark chocolate, over 50% cocoa , is almost unheard of in the US and the stuff they use for cooking is horrendous. Once they have some Lindt 70% they're converted!!

    Snowballs! After living in Europe for 19 years, and not buying chocolate because it is crap, I had forgotten snowballs. I recently got some Arab fakes of Bounty, snickers and Mars. Gross! I got some Arabic ´chocolate´ at the same time. I have had one square! I haven´t had the nerve to try another! They are all Halal, if that is important to you. To me if chocolate snaps when you bite into it, it ain´t chocolate! I do not Crunch chocolate! I have not found a foreign chocolate yet that doesn´t crunch. And what is it with praline? Why is the only filling praline? The devil´s diarrohea!´. Milka is like Galaxy on a sugar rush. And Galaxy is too sweet to start with. Cadburys is screwed since the Yanks got it, so I am glad to say I am not a great chocolate eater, or I would have been in trouble. Walkers, who surprisingly used to show up here pre Brexit, is worth it. Tiny Brummie family company who are still going, or were. They do lovely after dinner mints and the Turkish delight is nice, if a little runny. Unlike the Frys pencil rubber, Walkers actually tastes vaguely how it should. Heavy on Rose. Also one I remember as a kid, Beeches. No idea where it comes from, but it came in a huge block and the sweet shop person would hit it with a hammer. Like toffee. Put a chunk of that in your gob and you look like a hamster. Hard as rock, but it dissolves Slowly. As far as I know you can still get it, but it has always been a rare commodity. Lidls actually have the best Non English chocolate! Thin, but melty and tastes like Chocolate should. I would recommend the fruit and nut! Aldis? Naah! Taste like cocoa powder. and crunches.

    The Cadbury bars of my childhood were made under license by Hershey’s. They were somewhat better than regular Hershey’s, but not really that good. Maybe not now, but years ago Creme Eggs were imported from England where the chocolate was smoother. There has always better quality American chocolate, like Guittard (mostly sold in bulk to candymakers like See’s), TCHO, and even Mars. I’ve had samples of Mars bulk chocolate at the Ethel M factory in the Vegas area, and that is extremely smooth and suitable for high end candies. Lindt has bought several American companies including Ghirardelli, and they manufacture in the US.

    I'm from York, and I can tell you that when Rountree's was fully on the go, the smell of chocolate in the air was sublime. Back in the 80's and early 90's, you'd get the smell of chocolate from Rountree's, the smell from the sugar factory, and the smell from Terry's and Cravens. It was so intense that even Willy Wonker would've blown his load 🤣 My grandfather was a charge hand for KitKat at Rountree's, he was there all his working life. When he retired, he was given a very expensive hand crafted clock made from walnut with a brass plate that had his name and service dates engraved onto it. We still have the clock, and it's perfectly restored, working, and in mint condition. It's a piece of Yorks chocolate production history.

Nothing like your stereotypical, High fiving, USA chanting, Maga cap wearing Americans you see in the media. Im still in touch with them to this day. The one thing i remember was the sea food. Especially in fishermans Wharf in San Francisco. The best Clam Chowder I've ever had and was served in a bowl made from bread. I went in 1997 and 2000 for six months. I'm planning on taking my girlfriend next year, cause she's never been. We're hoping to spend 3/4 days in each place. I've never been to New York, so we're going there and Philly, New Orleans, Somewhere in Texas like Austin. And I'd love to go back to San Francisco and San Diego. @@tonydaddario4706 Cadbury don't give a % of cocoa solids for 'Dairy Milk' on their web site. However, both Sainsbury's and Tesco do; it's 23% and they both note the minimum is 20%, not 25%. Hearshey's is noticeably inferior to UK made Cadbury's Dairy Milk. However I agree with @ambersmith459, Cadbury's is at the lower end of UK chocolate. Decades ago, Ghirardelli was a reasonable US chocolate. Cadbury's chocolate has gone down hill. I'm old enough to remember 'Dairy Milk' in the late 60s. I don't believe my taste buds are so degraded to mistake the modern, inferior, Dairy Milk for 1960s Dairy Milk. I think Dairy Milk might have noticeably degraded twice, but I was eating better chocolate from the early 90s onwards, so I might be mistaken and it was just much worse than good chocolate. Suffice it to say as Hershey's is inferior to UK Dairy Milk, so is modern UK Dairy Milk inferior to 1960s Dairy Milk. To appreciate how bad it is, Cadbury's Bournville 'Dark Chocolate' has less cocoa solids than Green & Black's Milk chocolate; IIRC less than Green & Black's White chocolate. I usually eat 70%+ chocolate, it counts as a 'plant point' 😋 and not too sugary. Cadbury's have nothing. Best Wishes. ☮

The chocolates were always amazing, especially compared to the offerings of most commercial US chocolate brands! Meghan in particular fell in love with the Chocolate Oranges and could always expect to find one in her Christmas stocking every year. Seeing those among the sweets being offered to my fellow Americans made me nostalgic for Christmases Past ....

    This is the one area of American cuisine where I'm straight up like, other countries have us beat. My dad used to work with a lot of foreigners and they would always travel and bring him back chocolates, and man, we are missing out here. Thankfully a lot of these British chocolates are sold in markets here, so I've had a lot of them. My recommendation is "Flake." It is soooo weird. The bar is intentionally so crumbly and flaky but it literally just melts in your mouth.

  • @Pudddle

    @Pudddle

    As a brit I definitely recommend Flake. The most poplular thing we get from ice cream vans is a "99" which is just soft-serve with a flake stuck in it. Also, personally the crumbliness can get a bit messy and annoying so I also recommend looking out for Twirl, which is basically a flake with a solid outer shell, plus that gives it a little more bite 😋

    Not necessarily. There’s some extremely good American manufactured chocolate such as TCHO and Guittard. Hershey’s did buy out several high end candy companies but then either shut them down or changed them, like Scharffen Berger and Dagoba. However, it’s not typically found at the checkout stand.

    I live in Florida and I think the reason they aren’t as popular here even though you can buy them in stores, is that oranges are everywhere, and chocolate melts easily, so if I want to treat myself to some chocolate, I probably don’t want it to be orange flavored, and I wouldn’t want it to be packaged like that even though it looks cool because it would be a hassle to deal with in the Florida heat. That’s not to say I haven’t had them before. I grew up in Alaska and got them for Christmas. But now that I’m in Florida I’d rather just have an orange that I can get for free off a tree :)
