The video was directed by Laurent Boutonnat, who is also the composer of the song and her main collaborator at the beginning of her career. They both share a certain passion for 19th century romantic literature, and were certainly inspired by Oliver Twist for this video. As you said, this song is about disenchantment. It came out in 1991, Mylène was 30 then. She grew up in the 60s/70s where there was, as a general rule, a more optimistic view of the world. In the 80s, the AIDS crisis and economic difficulties brought back a certain pessimism, or disenchantment. I think Mylène meant it in a more universal than political way (she's not very political, she speaks of her own inner demons in her songs), but some magic happened and it sort of became an anthem for the youth back then (and it's made a big comeback these past few years among younger people, even though the difficulties we face are different). It is one of Mylène's most emblematic songs. The text is beautiful, and the melody is both complex and catchy. Mylène's biggest talent has always been to mix elements of pop/dance music with deeper thoughts on human nature. I think this video is meant to be more symbolic than historical. There's oppression, then a revolution to gain freedom, but freedom leads nowhere, because all that awaits us is death and emptiness in the end. On this happy note, have a nice day :D

LOL Being french I can tell for sure it's absolutely false. M.F. is having a crazy fanbase, like a cult, wich is massively trolling all over Internet to promote her. But in France, she's totally has been since mid 90's. And definitely not considered as one of the bests in history, very far from it.

Les prestations scéniques et les grands shows à l'américaine de MF susciteront toujours plus d'enthousiasme chez les Anglo-Saxons que les clips hermétiques, ténébreux, sombres et fantasmatiques voire violents, c'est ainsi. Il faut pour certains publics introduire d'abord MF par la scène et enfin par les clips. Les clips ont désorienté nombre de "réacteurs" qui depuis sont un peu mal à l'aise et c'est dommage. De plus, au lieu d'écouter la voix et la musique l'image capte plus l'attention, le clip empêche de se concentrer sur le son. Et puis certains clips ne sont pas trop à la hauteur comme "appelle mon numéro" où certes Mylène est comme toujours belle mais la mise en scène assez commune.

If you were a little more attentive to what you are watching, if you kept quiet during the viewing, if you could take the trouble to translate the lyrics of this song into English, you would understand the meaning of this great song and this beautiful video clip and not a movie 😉😉😉 Next time watch and listen carefully to the video clip until the end instead of making unnecessary comments during viewing.
