Another thing that makes me both proud and grateful to be a Swede is how the society works for the disabled. I am blind, but not at all dependent on charities. I have my guide dog and a screen reader program for my laptop and more. All those things are paid for by taxes and make it possible for me to have a ”normal” job and a pretty good life. There are some struggles, of course, but I get the impression that Sweden is one of the best countries in the world for people with disabilities.

I feel you missunderstand how taxes work here in sweden, a normal person will not pay 56% that's only if you make insane money, a normal worker will pay 33% and then it's no "come taxes" your income tax is deducted from your salary before it gets paied out, so you don't need to keep money saved up for taxes, the company you work for will make that payment automatic so you will never miss that money, since it was never in your account, what you get payed out is what you can spend at your leisure.

Nice reaction. Though, I have to say you have the wrong attitude for waste sorting. I live in Norway, and we are not as good as Sweden, but it is not far off. Why does everyone have to participate in such a system to introduce it? It's just nonsense. America consists of some of the world's largest cities. Nobody says you HAVE to throw your trash in the same place as everyone else. If enough people decide to make a difference, it is possible. In Norway, food waste does not turn into gas, it turns into nutrient-rich soil that consumers can buy very cheap. If anyone has the opportunity to start small, it is America. It is only about will and a little personal effort. American houses are so big that it should be possible to dedicate a shed to collect rubbish, to drive it to the the sorting centre once a month. The food waste will stink, but you can store it in tight cans. What's more, you can compost it yourself, even if you don't have a house with a garden, if you use the bokashi method.

But on the other side we implement a lot of systems we see working with our northern friends and we are still proud for our sociaty as a group. We do use similar recyling strategies aspecially with plastics, we care for a more equal playingfield in earnings and jobs and like to fund our cities or areas we live in and keep them mostly clean.

The modesty of lagom is directly linked to jantelagen (jante law) which basically works out as "don't think you're special". Things have change a LOT in just a few years. Right wing extremists are in government, gang related shootings are through the roof, the trust in strangers have more or less disappeared. The welfare system has been more or less privatized and ravaged by risk capitalists. So, to be fair, a lot of Swedes sure aren't as "happy" as before.

The tax rate for most people goes from 8 to 22, 28 and up to 32%, depending on your income. You pay over 50% if your income exceeds 598500 SEK (57836,84 US dollars).

@@herrbonk3635 Arbetsgivaravgiften is not a tax. It's a fee. If it were a tax, you would get more money if it was abolished tomorrow, and since that's not the case, it's not a tax. I know it's a favourite talking point for anyone that managed to spend a week close to Handels, but it's wrong. Do you even know how the fee were introduced and why? Stuff like that matters when you dedice to call something a "tax". You are basicly suggesting that a health insurance premium is a tax. It's not, just as your car insurance isn't. Also, the pointlessness of high procentage numbers were shown in the third post. It really doesn't matter as much as you think that the moms (sales tax, basicly) is 25% when the two largest expenditures for most people by far, housing and food, are taxed at 0% and 12%. Also, Sweden isn't even in the top 40 most car dependant countries in the world and have a decently high degree of EV and Hybrid adaptation, so a 70% gasoline tax is not such a big deal as it would be in most other industrialized countries. More than a third of the population lives in areas where public transportation is adequate or better.

The ‘Allemansrätten’ in Sweden (kinda translated into ‘The freedom to roam’ - The right of public access) is set in law. And lets you walk, or hike etc kinda wherever you want out in nature. There are some cases where you can’t but usually it’s not a problem (like walking on a farmers field and by that “destroying” their crops etc). The waste part of the clip is moore of Sweden GETTING PAID by other country’s to take their trash (Sweden is not paying for trash). In 2024-01-01 there was a new law implemented in Sweden witch forces every company, household etc to actually (by law) sort their trash into at least 8 (+ food trash) different fractions (like metal, wood, plastic, paper, glass - colored and plain etc). Most people sort their trash on a higher scale like batterys, electronics, compost (even the compost is divided into like food or gardening or earth/roots etc).

The REAL reason why there were bigger numbers in statistics about suicides is because.... *drum-roll* Sweden pretty much invented taking statistics of everything, including suicides. Nobody else wanted to keep statistics of suicide rates. And a lot of people in different countries, due to a lot of reasons (including religion and/or shame) didn't want to write down deaths as suicides, and they didn't get good statistical numbers on that. Think on this in similar way as statistics on rape. Some countries may have higher rates, due to them actually being reported. There's a lot of rapes not being reported, so the idea of the statistics can be very skewed.

In Sweden we are very individual, we have a really low avrage age when we move away from our parents, if i remember right its between 17-18, we are very strong in our integrity, freedom and human rights, for us its a human right to have free education affordable healthcare and so on, but just because we are very individual that does not mean we dont care about other people, we are a pretty empathic people. We have a good social security net, we dont need to worry if we get long term sick or unemployed, we still can afford to put food on the table, rich or poor. When it comes to recycling, i think its possible i the US, even if you started to make energy out of your garbage the the US would still need oil, but i think its more up to the companies to invest that is the problem and in the US its more or less them that run the country, here the government can push the companies to "ho green" and often the government give the companies money for it.

I think this is what Bernie Sanders was hinting to in his campaign 3 years ago; "Are you willing to work a little extra for somebody you don't know" (or something like that). This willingness is a cornerstone of a welfare society. You can also see it as one big insurance pool, where some of your taxes are insurance to get help if you should need it. If you don't need it, you still get retun on investment by living in a society with low crime rates, because all others get help if they should need it. But this probably only works if you have unions that are powerful enough to negotiate wages high enough so that the taxes does not hurt too much. In Scandinavia such negotiations are centralized by national level organizations for employers and empolyees. Right wing governments try to decentralize this process, because it gives employers more power, while left wing governments like to centralize it to the highest level so ensure that wages don't start to differ too much. The solidarity model is that high skilled workers gets lower wages than in the US, and low skill workers get higher wages than in the US, and remember that all of them get the same high quality healthcare and education without paying more than your fair share of taxes. A slogun amongst Scandinavian businessmen is often "takes are the price of civilization".

Great reaction! The best way to make the whole country (or at least the majority of the population) to work in the same direction for the benefit for all, is the trust in government and authorities. With that said, the government/authorities have to EARN the trust from the people! It's not easy anywhere (not even here in Sweden) but it doesn't look good in the US these days... Speaking of recycling... I have (and probably all of my neighbors 😅) a couple of bags in the garage, with soda bottles and cans, ready to recycle the next time going to the grocery store... 😆 And get a few dollars back.

I rebuilt my sailboat to a live-aboard bugout survival pod, my yearly cost of living is around $3500 including everything and Starlink internet as an luxury. In the summer I live in Scandinavia, in the winter the canary islands and Mediterranean sea. I'm planning to anchor in Rumania and live there for 3 years and just ride around on my CT 125, like why not, i know almost nothing about Rumania. 🇸🇪

The thing about recycling. It's not like it sprung out of the ground fully formed and Sweden went from where somewhere like the us is today to the current Swedish system in a year. Or even a decade. It's been building slowly for half a century or thereabouts to the point it is now. One municipality adopt one change, a few years down the line more municipalities saw it worked and jumped on the bandwagon... Etc etc and so forth. A couple of decades later it's standard pretty much everywhere. So yeah. I do not buy your it can't be done in the us. Because it would not be universally adopted from day one, so no point in anyone doing anything at all. That's not how things like this work. It's an accumulation of small steps over time. You guys even have a roadmap. We did it blind. So you could probably get there in half the time. If you stopped this ridiculous excuse of 'why should I do anything if my neighbour don't.'

Actually, it's good to do overtime work, since for eg working 4 hours on a Saturday, you can take a whole day off as compensation. And as for taxation, yeah it's high, but we don't need to pay for Health insurance, we don't need to pay for College, we don't need to pay for School lunches, meds are relatively cheap, if we get fired or quit our job we get money from the state, no fee for daycare of our children, seeing a doctor for an x-ray will cost you $15, very seldom road tolls... Add to that that the water in the rivers/lakes are of better quality than store bought bottled water.

Was the guy Ukrainian or Russian? He seemed a bit confused on some parts about Sweden and Swedish mentality and I don't know, lots was right and true but lots was a bit misunderstood and also just his opinions. I think some of the biggest reasons Swedes are happier than many other is the sense of security, even if you work for a lower paying job you can afford living and you have several weeks vacation, payed paternity leave, affordable healthcare and medicine and security if you get sick and can't work, free education and healthcare and dentist until 19 then after 20 still very affordable. It's clean in public spaces, good public transport, people are seen as equals (you address teachers and doctors, your boss etc. by their first name), people who brag and show off is just seen as embarrassing but owning nice things or expensive things are not looked down on it' just doesn't make you seem better than others. It's much more about being a genuine person and true friend and doing good that is valued. Even if you work at McDonald's and you have the swedish taxes you still can live in a nice small apartment and have all benefits like everyone else and you need to be treated well at work or your boss will be in trouble, your apartment must be well kept up by your landlord, they can't rent out something that isn't in good condition etc. or they will be in trouble. So it's not at all like what you see in the US. Since it's no problem living well and you make enough money to live well and travel etc you never think about taxes taken off your salary, you think of what you make that actually comes into your account as your salary and that is enough for most to also, travel and save after paying for house and clothes and fun etc.

One thing that was not covered in the video is the Swedish school system. For example, young children are not rewarded for having high grades but instead for being a good friend. Private schools are free and all children/youth gets paid for as long as they are in school. This also means that everyone has the same right to a good education. That way anyone can become anything regardless of your financial status. So many innovations that come from Sweden that the rest of the world has no idea about. But as it is in our DNA, we don't brag about it 😉

Regarding what was mentioned at the end, I think that is exactly how it is. When you have to work to survive the winter, everyone has to participate and work hard. Perhaps it has also affected the gene pool in the northern countries that long, dark winters together in small houses led to those who failed to conform, i.e. to take account of others, ended up without reproducing themselves - either because someone in the same household lost patience with them (and ended their lives), or that no one could bear the thought of producing children with them. Those who reproduced themselves were those who were able to adapt to a life of cooperation and harmony with others.

I was born in early 90s but I was kinda shocked when I learned this from my dad as a young teen. From sweden ofc. But became happy when I moved to south east asia at 25years old. They say Scandinavia is great but damn I lived 25 years there and now I´m happier then ever at the fringes of society in eastern asia.

Living in Sweden i apprechiate free healthcare but still i think that the taxes is a bit high already for thoose who not have a very high income. For example nurses ho study several years and then picks up student loan to finance their living and so on during studies even if studies for swedes is tuition free. When start working four or five years later then people who do not go to collage and have to pay theese high taxes on top of your income well lets say it is not always an lifetime economic incitament to study but on the other hand you get to work with something you want. Hard to ger rich in Sweden as an employee but if you start a company you can 🙂
