Ah, the big problem with THIS video is probably something you haven't thought about. The translation is way to small to read on anyone's telephone. And the dialogue is fast, so you really need to see clearly the English text.

There is a bike safety exam in 4th grade (age 9) in Berlin schools. They even have special "Jugendverkehrsschulen" (Youth traffic schools) with minature streets, street signs, crossings etc. etc. to train! Like a driver's license, but for biking.

Let me put European American relations in perspective with a personal story : My most loyal friend of 20+ yrs is an American, over the years we have had fierce steaming discussions. But still the man has always had my back, with deeds, not just words. Unfortunately i had to save his 2yrs ago , but i was glad i was there ( we were in a carcrash, he had a stroke whle driving) . You Can not break that bond, even if we live 4000miles apart and disagree massively on certain issues, even if his wife didnt like me at first 😂. I think of Europe and America like that. My 2 cents. 🤘❤️ So, taking into account there are pricks in any country, i think if you put an average american in a room with an average german, or even European, they will have some differences but will generally get along quite easily. The things we differ in are just a little part us, it jsut depends on how important thzt part is to you if you want to go into a deep discussion or talk shit and go for a drink. I think on both sides of the pond average people would quickly decide to get out of that room and go for a drink together. There are hundreds of videos talking about what we dislike about eachother, watched many and on many points i agree from a european standpoint. But it would be great to have a video why europe and america are and will always be eachothers best friends . Grown up friends that sometimes disagree but will always have eachothers back when it matters. 🤘❤️🇧🇪🇺🇲

German - Swiss American! German on my father's side! Dad had to study German in college in the 1940's because he was a Chemistry major! All the important Chemistry papers were written in German! He was fortunate necause his Grandmother on his mom's side spoke fluent German! Our Swiss side came to the USA in 1812 , mom's side! Her Swiss family married inti a English family ,the Mattingley Family who came to Maryland in 1643, Catholics looking for religious freedom! 🇩🇪🇨🇭🇺🇲🌊♀️🌊♀️🌊Germany & Switzerland are both beautiful countries ! I was fortunate to have been able to travel to Europe in 1984! I strongly encourage young Americans to travel! 🇩🇪🇨🇭🇺🇲🤗

An important statement came from you, Americans who live in Germany are cool people. I would add: everyone who leaves his own country to really learn to live in a foreign culture gets always cooler than he was before. Helps against stereotypes on all sides.

Hi Joel, as always, first impression, average attitude or not at least view to world is connected to the environment you grew up and lived in. Three main points (concerning attitude and behaviour) which have been proven again and again and is a different to me thinking about „typical American: 1. I was shocked how often Americans I worked with were happy with sloppy results. For many it is like ... once it looks like it's completed, they close that chapter. Even though there may be still a rat-tail of problem unsolved, or things being left that others had to do then, they do consider the work done once it looks fairly ok to outsiders. Making your boss think you did a good job counts more than actually doing a good job. ….2. Besides of doing the company's work, it is not unusual also managing the house, family, partner, children or whatever from work. They hang hours at the phone and solve family problems. 3. Another example is going together for lunch. There are groups, I should call them tribes. If you belong to them and participate, that can decide about your future in the company. Different tribes have different social rankings. Or the amount of drinking together. If you don't go along (most of the time), you will not be included in their circles work-wise as well. For us Germans, these things do not determine the value of a colleague. And finally, what I would also call a typical American: once she/he left U.S. of A. and have been in contact with one/two of the other 195 countries in the world, Americans in general have higher abilities to adopt and use the advantage of new skills, knowledge and not at least view to their own life. Sitting in Kissimmee and reading a German newspaper will ensure a typical American will ask: where you’re from, please read loud, I like to hear the sound of your language! ….small talk is soooo easy in the States …. and for a German often a disappointment (due to our attitude) as we believe after having a 25min talk „see you later“ means we do so and will join for dinner…. which is, of course, not! ….but this is the incapacity of Germans to adopt others’ behaviours… for limited time (would not happen to an American).

Interesting re the brand thing. I'm a Brit and go out of my way to avoid wearing clothes with brands on. Flaunting wealth is horrible IMO.

well i know a bunch of americans over the years and they are usually fun and easy to be friends with but they are mostly surface people a good friend in good times but gone of the shit hits the fan .. good weather friends. its not that easy to make friends with germans but if you made a friend here you have a friend for life

I enjoyed this, I love the sound of German too. How about an EasyPolish episode? They have an episode about the USA too. Once you're in Berlin it's not far to go, Poland has some great cities and gorgeous countryside.

I guess there's a big difference between the average American in America (ignorant of world geography, arrogant, thinks the USA is best at everything) and the type of American who lives or travels in Europe (more modest, aware of the USA's failings in gun control and health care etc)

I’ve been in Germany many times and I see a lot of designer especially the youth is wearing lots of expensive brands like dsquared and stone island. Same with the Netherlands. I live there and almost everyone wears expensive brands.

I suggest warching episodes from the "heute show" or "Die Anstalt" with USA topics. They are in German with pretty good English captions. Or you go for TV series like "Dark" or "Barbaren"

Im a german working in an american company in germany, where a lot of my colleagues are Americans. Americans always directly make you feel that you are very close to them, even if you only just met them. That for example is something which for germans, comes of as artificial, I think mainly because we are just not used to it. It also came of as very artificial for myself. Nowadays Im mostly appreciating it because it makese these first meetings very comfortable

Regarding the branded clothes mania. This was a "thing" in the late 1990's to early 2000's. Not any more. Of course there are some who feel inadequate if they don't have clothes with "names", emblazoned on them. That to me is sad, because you pay ridiculously more money for what reason? As someone has said, you are like a walking advertisement but without getting paid. But what bothers me most is not everyone can afford to buy these things, which I'm sure makes them feel left out. Other than that a great video. 😊

I can provide some context for the "superficial". In US culture it's common to have layers of "superficial" friendliness that don't exist in Germany. One example being "how are you" and the expectation that the other person is just supposed to say "oh good". In Germany we don't ask cashiers or other people we don't know how they are, because in 90% of the cases it's an actual question you can answer. Same goes for events. I was an exchange student in the US and a friend of my host family was living in Washington D.C. and he said "You can come over any time if you want, I'll show you the city etc.". Apparently and I still have a hard time grasping this, he was just being friendly and it wasn't an offer of any kind. If a German says "you can come over to x event at my place" you can definitely come over. There is no ambiguity. There is pros and cons to both, but it's easy to see that Germans who aren't familiar with this might feel that they are being deceived to a certain extent or that the communication feels fake and superficial. On the flipside Germans might appear very rude from the US point of view, because they won't say 3 times how amazing everything was or similar.

Again, the subtitles are so small to read, but since I can't read German, I have to try to read the English translations of the subtitles, which are impossibly small! 🙄😑 can you switch to full screen for the parts where you aren't speaking? I know it'll take longer for you to edit, but there's no point in me trying to watch your post if I can't understand it. Thanks!

I like your reviews. They are very balanced and rational, which sadly become the exception. The only thing that irritates me is the finger snap and "peace" sign at the end. First of all, it is a Victory sign, not a peace sign. Secondly, we are in the 21st century, not in the 60's and 70s of the previous century. Anyway, keep it up. I will continue watching, with or without "peace".

Visible brand lettering (the bigger, the worse) tends to devalue the product for many germans and is viewed as “cheap”. As a (german) customer I would feel stupid; as a kind of "useful idiot". I pay a lot of money for a product and then I'm supposed to work as free advertising space? No, thanks. I think most Germans see smaller labels, good designers, individuality, high-quality materials and workmanship as realy “luxurious”.

I don't think the girl was hurt saying Americans are superficial. It's the whole vibe as like from the media and everything (which is a lot) you "get" from America, which is very superficial and many Americans have this vibe.

Well... I grew up in the part of Germany that was part of the American zone. My immediate surroundings were swarming with American troops, including helicopters. Normally there were little to no problems. But then occasionally things happened that gave you chills during the Cold War, such as the practice of digging mass graves. Then there were also incidents where you could only wrap your head around it. In the past, US soldiers' cars had bright green license plates. Of course you could easily recognize them. As a 16-year-old, I was walking past the main post office in my district town when I casually noticed a light blue VW Beetle with an American registration. I saw it quite often and it wasn't anything special. As I walked past, I casually glanced inside the VW and stopped dead in my tracks. In the back seat were at least half a dozen M-16 assault rifles. Thoughts were racing in my head... Should I report this to the German police? Because one thing was completely clear! There was almost no car that was easier to crack than a VW Beetle. And one in 5 Germans knew exactly how to do it! I ultimately decided against it. Because it could well be that the American was only in the post office for a few minutes doing something. And I didn't want to cause the soldier any trouble because of it. But what an improvidence and carelessness in the use of military weapons...
