He is not drunk, he is playing a character. He remembers all the audience members names and jobs, like no other. He is a renowned historian and author.

A British icon.
Al Murray is a genius! He isn't drunk, he's acting it. Although he drinks beer, most of it ends up on the stage floor. Al Murray is Oxford educated and has a ton of degrees. He's an extremely intelligent man! A British legend! We love him!!!

He's not drunk. He's playing a character - The pub landlord.
He is definitely not drunk, it's part of the act. Remember he is playing the part of a pub landlord. He has an amazing memory. When he talks to the audience he remembers them then includes them in the act.
AFAIK he isn't drunk. The beer is either low or no alcohol. Its part of the act.
The genius of Al Murray is that he makes the moon landing relatable to his audience by turning into a stag do to Ibiza (Med party island) with traditional prank on one of your mates. He is not drunk btw. We have something in the UK called 'acting'

Americans be like Lord of the Rings? Is that based on a true story?? There must be a lesson about art and artifice that they don't get taught?
Hi. Al Murray has read Modern History at Oxford, in reality the on-stage persona is not his real self. He has done some great WWII documentaries on UK TV.
That’s the point, he’s acting. He wouldn’t be able to do the complexity of his routine if he was actually drunk.
He's as sober as a judge! It's called acting, fellas!😮😊
A good friend used to run a small comedy club for up and coming comedians - and Al Murray was one of them. One day he arrived for his gig, and asked her if he could do his act from the bar at the side of the venue instead of the stage. She agreed, and that's where The Pub Landlord was first seen by the public!
I think British stage comedians have a long history of interaction with the audience - perhaps not as a basis for the whole act though. Dealing with drunken or stupid hecklers is a key skill for standup comedians, especially in rougher venues. A theatre in Glasgow was famous for how badly the acts were treated by the audience (especially acts from England). English comedians coming off the stage to no applause were told that they had actually done quite well: 'if they like you here, they let you live!' They were also paid extra for working there! Another famous incident involved a young singer who was so frightened whilst on stage there that he feigned fainting so as to be dragged off.

Ahhh the Old Glasgow Empire!! And the singer was Des O'Connor lol. Eric Morecombe once said Des should have rented out his shoes for adverts on the bottom of them, as that was what the audience saw most of the time! lol
Al went to school in my town (Bedford UK) and when he did a Pub Landlord show here a few years back I met him afterwards. He definitely wasn't drunk, it's all an act. Al is a very clever chap & charming to meet.
Al Murray is brilliant, he plays being drunk, i met him after a show where he was selling his autobiography, he was very friendly, signed the book and had photos taken with us ( no slurred speech ) British comedians do interact with audiences at live shows, so much so some people are scared to sit on the front row
Star Wars movies were in the order 4,5,6,1,2,3,7,8,9 because in charge of scheduling Yoda was 😂
Not judging, but it is interesting you say a lot of British humour can be childish which is exactly what we think of a lot of American humor which must say something about us all. A lot of Y'tubers seem to enjoy British comedy which can be very different and involves far more sofisticated play with the English language a lot of the time. I appreciate that our use of English is far more "colourful" and inventive perhaps in our daily lives which explains some of it. I also think this points to some societal and moral freedoms that we enjoy that our US cousins don't albeit by mutual concensus on your part.

Al is a smart cookie. Dave Allan is Irish, by the way.
I doubt if Al Murray was actually drunk, that's probably part of the act. The drink in his hand was just as likely to have been cold tea.
You know when you see a person playing a character really well when they convince their audience that they are drunk while they are performing as a pub landlord drinking what looks like large volumes of beer on a stage while remembering names and details able to react and ad libany comedy gems that may fall at his feet if Al was indeed drunk it would probably fall apart at the seams and look very amateurish. It is that well crafted.
As others have said, he's not drunk, it's all an act. And when you see him being interviewed on talk shows, he is very well spoken too - the accent is all part of the show. A very intelligent man!
Can you do Al Murray 'How Global Finance Really Works' ? You'll both love it!

Fun fact about this guy… he seems very working class from this character but he’s actually very well connected… His great great great grandfather was William Makepeace Thackeray who wrote the vanity fair novel and was best mates with Charles dickens
Al murray was in a sit come called time gentleman please where he played his stand up persona it was so funny
Lol - the quintessential pub landlord - that's why he has the bar and beer barrel props there on stage.
"when you were a little girl did you skip around in knickers?" Qué: motionless expressions from our cousin's across pond!!
He's very educated and clever actor
"I think comedians reacting with the crowd is more of a recent thing". That's so sweet. When I was their age, many decades ago, I also thought everything was absolutely shiny new and that my generation had just invented it. And stand-up comedians reacting with the crowd was very usual and by no means new.
Al Murray vs Americans or Al Murray we’ve defeated every country are funny
Check out Al Murray on how global economics work. His accents are bang on point, especially the New York accent.

Seen him live twice he's so good. He's always been a master of crowdwork.
No drinking alcohol before (or during) this performance.
Love this lol, Al Murray will have a couple beers before a show but never drunk, the beer in his hand is a prop he will eventually spill all of it then refill just to spill it all again.
Hes not drunk. Hes a very renowned and respected comic. Very clever at what he does.
You won't see these performances on TV, although that's how he started out in the 90's. Saturday night, with guests. He was still hilarious.
You guys didn't notice the way he sang the National Anthem? We've all seen drunken friends or family members, at New Year, singing something that sounds like this...." Awwww..sheboyn... sheybrooo stnajoo..." Utterly indecypherable! That's what Al was imitating ☺
He isn’t drunk it’s just an act….very funny guy
British comedians have interacted with the audience since the 18th century. American ones are behind the resf of the world. He is completely sober and just pretending to be drunk. If you don't get that, the whole thing is over your heads.
There's a lot of beers sunk before most British stand-up shows, so interacting with the crowd is something you have to learn to deal with. Peter Kay's a master of that actually
Imagine if the 3rd astronaut Michael Collins said - stuff them/ this ... and drove away lol

One little thing you missed. When the spaceship lands, he does a great noise of a handbrake being pulled on. On a spaceship!
Al Murray does a very interesting podcast with fellow historian James Holland called ‘We Have Ways of Making You Talk’, on different aspects of the Second World War. Well worth a listen.
If you haven’t listened to Al Murry - take on around the world, give it a go. It funny, and clever!😂
Guys !!!!!!!! He's NOT drunk, hes playing a part ......
he’s playing a character called the pub land lord.hes not drunk it’s part of the act.
You ought to check out him on how the financial system works.
Had the pleasure of working with him on his tour of the Pub Landlord show many years ago, he's a great guy and as many have said already, very well educated (an audience member said something about history and Al just hit him with facts and quotes to prove the guy wrong - but still in character as the landlord!), and the drunkenness is an act. (But his tour manager writes down the involved audience members' name, job etc during the first half of the show and gives it to Al at the interval to remind him who is who!)
Al Murray is a national treasure
Joel - FACT - Al Murray is stone cold sober in all his performances. He's a very good actor and I think he said in an interview that is not alcohol in his pint glass.
More al Murray, he's not drunk as has been said it's his character (the drunk landlord). But just great so great
He's definitely not drunk, he's in character, a well known historian
Before he was The Pub Landlord, Al Murray's comedy was basically him doing sound effects.
he dont drink mate
Hello Joel and pal. I will leave Al to other comments, as there will no doubt be many. As commented before, elsewhere, the star of British comedy, is not the hero making fun of the clown, as in much US comedy, but rather the clown. The guy who makes a complete fool of himself, but manages to see the funny side of life as all collapses and yet gets on with it regardless at the end. The ordinary person, who will never be a "success" but never gives in. The Charlie Chaplin or Stan Laurel. It is similar to how taking the Mickey out of those who would wish to stand out is a way of reminding them they are no better than anyone else in a system that has a king and lords and ladies and is done to show you are "one of us" not to exclude and that showing you are "one of us" infers you are just as good as everyone else, whatever anyone says.

I was about to comment that he wasn't drunk, but I see about 90 people have beaten me to it. :) My favourite from the Pub Landlord is "Name a country...we have defeated them", where Murray uses his encyclopoedic knowledge of history to explain why any country an audience member can shout out has been beaten in war by Britain. It's hilarious and pretty impressive.

Al Murray is a really clever guy, he plays up to being a little bit drunk purely in character. If you've not seen Al Murray does the world of his take on how global finance works then you're missing a genius at the top of his game. The man is hilarious.👍😂
He is playing a character he's not drunk and not had 5/6 pints do you think he'd be able to perform let alone remember his script.
Oh I am REALLY. looking forward to this. I love Al Murray...... how this will translate to the US, I will find hilarious!!
Correct guys, he's actually an Oxford University history grad, check his WW2 documentaries
I love Al Murray. Don’t be fooled by his act. ?He is very clever. He graduated from Cambridge university. Comédiens are generally extremely intelligent.
Liam Neeson portryaed Micheall Collins in a film about Irish Indipendence. Collins was eventually assassinated
I love Al Murray. His Pub Landlord character is hilarious
Going to see him live in march.
We should remember that at University Al Murray's first claim to fame, and get his beer money, was from mimicking Sound Effects and Voices to make people laugh.
You’re missing one thing from him being British…and it’s great
i had to hear the start 2 times al murray is like is like a british comedian bro al murray is a british comedian and a historian he drinks alcohol-free beer on stage cause its an act
Hi Joel I'm the guy from Wales UK, have you ever heard status quo playing down down, it will make your hair stand on end, many thanks.
Hes ACTING THE PART OF A LANDLORD
Went to see his show. He can remember people's names and everything he knows about them even after two hours
I’m seeing him live Friday night
No no he's completely sober he's a consummate professional, the landlord is his alter ego, a caricature of the boorish opinionated type that runs the really rough pubs and clubs (conservative)
If you meet Al in real life and he talks to you in his 'normal' voice, he has actually got quite a posh voice.
Watch the last episode of "The Green Room with Paul Provenza", where Jimmy Carr and Tim Minchin were guests!!
I knew i didn't have to correct them, it's been done...but I'd watch a video of them reading the comments and realising we're so dumb lol.
He drink non alcohol beers in the act. Hes playing a "character," a Pub Landlord.
HE IS NOT DRUNK ITS HIS COMEDY ACT
Al Murray vs Americans. Gwan lads 😂
He’s playing a character! He’s not drunk.
Al Murray is actually very well educated he went to oxford If I'm not mistaken
I met Al Murray in York
Such a genius character. Try alan partridge.
He’s NOT drunk and he isn’t a pub owner. It’s a persona! 😀😀😀 “ He’s very opinionated” 🤣🤣😂😂
Al Used to do Sound Effects, you should check it out lol
It’s a stereotype of a pub landlord
Joel, did somebody cut your bangs with garden shears?! Also, I really like your channel.
He only drinks on stage. (And the British can drink. They start early.) Now the audience members may have a couple drinks in them. You’ve probably been advised he’s an Oxford grad and what he doesn’t know about history you don’t need to know.
For epic audience participation check out his 'Wars Britain have won'. Expert historian.
Oooh Joel,Arturo..Ya done it now. Look at all the comments below saying our dear old Al Murray was drunk. He's just a bit boisterous, thats all. And a great sub for a history teacher
How many pints??!! It's an act. Dear God.
Fast n furious franchise is awesome! Love em all!
Al Murray's Top 5 Tanks video (on the Tank Museum channel) is brilliant if you know anything about tanks. Then also watch his Botton 5 Tanks video.
He Was Not Drunk!
He’s not drunk. It is a performance.
You might like Micky Flanagan. He's quite different from Al Murray.. There's a particular clip on living in America as well which you might enjoy. There's a bit more slang in it though.
Al Murray comes from an upper class privileged background, very posh school and university. The working class pub landlord is a brilliant device to lampoon bigotry through the eyes of a so called Everyman. He is also a serious historian with many thoughtful you tube videos, especially about the 2 nd World War. His routines about race and national identity,( trying to explode their myths with irony) are the opposite of his ( I'm guessing) soft left, centre left, real opinions, which I'm sure come from decades of reading history books.
You have to show Arturo Frankie Boyle!!
He most def is not drunk he is acting a roll lol. He is in fact massively intelligent so you need to watch more
