In Saxon times Nottingham was called Snotingasham, and then after the Norman Conquest in 1066, was renamed, and in time became Nottingham (mainly becasue the French couldn't pronounce it correctly). So, the S was removed from the front of the name... which makes me thankful they didn't remove it from Scunthorpe! 😯

I remember going to Belvoir Castle think it was as a kid in the early 80s, banqueting and jousting etc, great fun. Unfortunately during the period of Robin Hood, Sherwood forest extended into Yorkshire, and the Sheriff of Nottingham was also the Sheriff of Yorkshire, Robin Hood was from Wakefield, West Yorkshire. He hid out in Barnsdale forest, now just a small wood outside Doncaster which back then extended all the way to Barnsley.

Sherwood Forest has some excellent entertainment with jousts and sword fights and medieval costume actors randomly wandering around the forest and of course the Major Oak tree from the time of Robin Hood which is around 800-1000 years old and folklore says that Robin would meet his merry men there as a shelter to sleep & plan their activities if you ever feel like immersing yourself in more Robin Hood lore.

Hi Jess and family, built into the cliffs below the castle, is one of the most famous pubs\inns in the UK, "Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalem", earliest reference to it dates from 1189, and it was used by Knights on their way to the Holy Land during The Crusades. I always enjoy your journeys to your destinations almost as much as when you arrive, as I've spent many years travelling the same roads. One of the firms I used work fo,r used to deliver new narrowboats for a local steel fabricators. The worst part of the job was finding a way to the marinas that avoided the hump-back canal bridges that would ground the trailer.

The White Hart ("hart" being an archaic word for a mature stag) was the personal badge of Richard II, who probably derived it from the arms of his mother, Joan "The Fair Maid of Kent", heiress of Edmund of Woodstock. It may also have been a pun on his name, as in "Rich-hart".In the Wilton Diptych (National Gallery, London), which is the earliest authentic contemporary portrait of an English king, Richard II wears a gold and enamelled white hart jewel, and even the angels surrounding the Virgin Mary all wear white hart badges. In English Folklore, the white hart is associated with Herne the Hunter.

Hi Jess, Chris and family. Thanks for taking me to Nottingham. If you want narrowboats then come to Birmingham for a weekend - we have more canals than Venice and you can take a trip on a narrowboat. Birmingham has some great places to visit such as the Jewellery Quarter with its Pen Museum and Jewellery Museum and strangely Newman's Coffin Works. Birmingham was known as the city of a thousand trades. We have a Gun Proofing House that can be visited and our Museum & Art Gallery contains part of the Staffordshire Hoard which are the spoils of war - the Saxon hoard contains intricate gold and ruby pieces which have been cleaned using a thorn from Blackthorn bushes (that produce Sloes).

I hate to spoil your fantasy Jess, but the Sheriff of Nottingham (and almost certainly Robin Hood) are fictional characters invented in poems and ballads in medieval times to present stories that minstrels and musicians could tell to the common people, before the majority of people could read, as a story of good triumphing over evil. There may be several people from the past who the character of Robin Hood is based on, dating from the early 1200s to the mid 1300s - though none had anything to do with the city of Nottingham - and the Sheriff of Nottingham is a character created in later stories of Robin Hood to be an enemy for Robin to fight against. Whilst the position of High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and the Royal Forest has existed as a royal appointment since Norman times, there is no record of any of the people who held this position ever being involved in capturing or pursuing criminals who lived in Sherwood Forest (or any other forest). It's a good story though.

You had a great day, but you missed quite a lot of history outside the Castle but where you were. There was the Olde |trip to Jerusalem dated 1109, the oldest Inn in England. Just near the castle entrance is Standard Hill, where King Charles 1st riased his "standard" - flag to rally troops and this is where the English Civil War started in 1642. The small house just opposite the castle is a small lace museum which was moved in one piece to where it is now. Nottingham is world famous for lace. Many of the lace machines from Nottingham were exported to Calais France (also famous for lace -in French dentelle) and there is a Rue Nottingham in Calais. There is so much more to see in my city - hopefully you might re-visit and see more history. Best wishes from Nottingham.

You might be interested to know that there is a place just outside Nottingham called Gotham. Yes it has links with Batman but the local call it Goatham. There is so much more to explore in the city i think a return trip would be a great idea . Did you see the pub Trip To Jerusalem at the bottom of the castle rock ? . One of the oldest in the country and built into the rock , very cool . There is also the Salutation Inn , another of the oldest pubs just across the dual carriageway . The Galleries of Justice is well worth checking out too . The Lace market area too , all in walking distance around the city centre .

If you go down to the canal and strike up a conversation, someone with a narrowboat will give you a tour. Better yet, rent one for a trip down the waterway. You should have gone to Nottingham Forest itself. There are some beautiful walks that provide the story of Robin Hood and his Merry Men. Good job on navigating the roundabouts as well as the single traffic back roads.

@DaydreamersBarn you are most welcome. Narrowboats are great fun and have everything you need on board. The canal lock system is easy to use, too. If you can brave roundabouts, you will do just fine with locks. There are plenty of canals in England, so you could make a long weekend of it, sailing along looking at beautiful scenery and maybe stopping somewhere with a nice pub. Happy Holidays. Happy narrowboating.

You must read up on a very real historic event that took place in the cellars of Nottingham Castle in I think September 1330. The film 'Braveheart' is not very historical(!), but the English King then was called Edward I (Longshanks). He died in 1307 and was succeeded by his son Edward II, who was bisexual. This wouldn't have mattered terribly, but he gave utterly over-the-top favouritism to his boyfriends: Piers Gaveston - who was arrogant; and Hugh le Despencer the Younger, who was very unpleasant and did dreadful things to people. Edeard II's wife, Isabella of France, was not very nice either, and eventually invaded the country with her boyfriend, Roger Mortimer, Earl of March, and deposed Edward II (1327), in the official name of Edward's 14-year-old son Edward III. (Edward II was reputed to have been brutally murdered; but he may have been spirited away to an Italian monastery.) The brave and warlike young King began to feel that his position was perilous, particularly after his uncle was executed. So Edward III, at age eighteen, with a group of young nobles, in 1330, secretly invaded Nottingham Castle through those very cellars you went through; they seized Roger Mortimer, put him in a very secure cell in the Tower of London - a few years earlier Roger had escaped - and, after a proper trial, had him executed. Edward III then had a lot of glory, winning battles in France (Crecy and Poitiers), founding the Order of the Garter, and starting St George's Chapel, Windsor, where Elizabeth II had her Committal. Of course Edward III is the ancestor of our present King ( and many others).
