Normally I can't watch people's travel vlogs all the way through, but somehow I love yours. Been watching for a good couple of months. I think it's the commentary given during the journey. Some people may find footage of driving boring but I like hearing it. Also because I'm English probably I am biased towards these videos. Keep it up 😊

Worth pointing outfor those who aren't aware that "castle" in the context of a house like this is an affectation - castles evolved into defended manor houses in and around the Elizabethan period with the advent of gunpowder based weapons so there are several Manor houses from the tudor period which had decorative moats etc. This later just evolved into building a house that just looked like a castle and calling it a castle.

Great video (again). Tragically, I used to be able to run up all the hills to the stately homes/castles that have hills but now find myself puffing away to get up them. The homes/castles where the family still live in them often have really interesting family photos in the rooms. Often pictured with Royals, politicians or society folk. If you get a chance, go to Holkham Hall which is also great. I love your spirit of adventure.

There is a very funny story about Belvoir Castle and the Ford Motor Company which may or may not be true. Back in the 1950s an Executive from Ford's UK office was at their Head Office in Detroit. Whilst he was there he was taken to the Design Section where he was shown a mock up of a new model. "What are you going to call it?" he asked. "Oh, we decided to name it for a British castle." "So which one have you chosen? Windsor? Buckingham? Stirling?" "No, we have gone with the name of a lesser known one: Bell-voir." "Really? And how is that spelt?" " B, E, L, V, O, I, R" "I hate to tell you this but the actual pronunciation of that is .........." "😳😳😳😳😳" They changed the name. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

The avenue of trees was great and I too love it when trees overhang. However, it is not so good when sunlight shines through the branches and causes a flickering or strobe effect. That is a beautiful castle, thank you for showing us. I never complain about the entry cost. If you have ever tried to employ a gardener, decorator and builder it is obvious that these places cost millions to maintain. It is a never-ending cycle and the final reward is the horrendous death taxes.

Hi Jess & Chris: for your interest as a part of this wonderful trip: The first castle was built on this site by the Normans shortly after their invasion in 1066. They also named the location Belvoir in French but the local Anglo Saxons were unable to pronounce the French and called it Beaver, a practice continued for a thousand years, thereafter.

I was brought up in Melton Mowbray, just ten miles from Belvoir (yes, it IS "beaver!"). I used to cycle out that way regularly as a lad. The Terrace Hills form the southern edge of the Vale of Belvoir, with Melton a few miles beyond. You always had to make a big decision about riding down into the Vale, below the castle, since it meant a big drag back uphill again to get home! My late Grandad used to be in charge of the police in Melton, and he could remember the current Duke of Rutland's father and uncle. I've been to the castle itself a few times - they often held events there. It was built on what is definitely the most prominent site overlooking the Vale, and the surrounding estate is massive.

I visited a few years ago and was blown away by the place but they were doing a lot of planting in the wilder parts of the garden so it’ll be good to go back one day and see how it’s developing. This castle is owned by the Manners family who also own Haddon Hall in Derbyshire, not far from Chatsworth. Haddon Hall isn’t as large as Belvoir Castle but it’s a lot older and unmodernised as it was locked up and untouched for 200 years. If you ever visit you really will think you’ve stepped back in time to medieval England.

No reason why you cant have your own versions of the best of what you see on your trips. I used to ride my horse around Belvoir village, and it is a delightful spot. Have a great week!

The English have been known for centuries as a nation of gardeners Jess. In it's prime, this place may have had a team of 20 to 30 gardeners and grounds - keepers. The owners of these places may occasionally have had visits from VIP's and even members of the Royal Family over the years, so things would need to be sufficiently "grand" enough Jess....

The Norman nobles built some grim castles, but they called them sentimental names: 'Belvoir' 'beautiful view'; "Beaulieu' 'beautiful place'; 'beau repaire' (now Belper) 'beautiful retreat', and so on. We then garbled the pronunciation! The Manners family are one of the great families of England. Their ancestress Anne Plantagenet wasn't just a descendant of Edward III; she was one of the last princesses of the ancient Royal House of Plantagenet. She was a sister of King Edward IV and King Richard III, both of the branch of the House of Plantagenet called the House of York. ( It was the DNA of one of her descendants that proved the body found under a car park in Leicester was indeed Richard III.) She was aunt to the murdered Princes in the Tower and great-aunt to Henry VIII. (And Henry VIII's sister, Margaret, Queen Consort of Scots, from whom the present Royal Family descend.) The House of York used the title 'Earl of Rutland' as a subsidiary title, which is maybe why her grandson became Earl of Rutland, and further descendants became Dukes of Rutland.

Belvoir is pronounced Beaver, you're correct, there are a number of names & places that were brought over by William the Conqueror in 1066, Belvoir is only one of many & the English (Anglo Saxons) deliberately wouldn't use the French pronunciations, that's exactly why they're weird! Cholmondley is another, pronounced Chumley, Beaulieu is Bewley etc

Another great video guys. What is wrong video filming inside? I don't understand. Sometimes we have weird and stupid rules in the UK 🇬🇧 I assume that you are serving in the US military at one of the Air bases. That's great and you will undoubtedly be proud to serve your country. It's such a shame that our UK 🇬🇧 military are treated like third class citizens. They would never be able to experience anything like this when serving abroad. They (British) are payed much less and are taken for granted. No wonder they can't get anyone to join up.
