Americans Don’t Understand Joel Embiid’s Betrayal

Спорт

Joel Embiid, one of the most dominant and charismatic players in the NBA, has found himself at the center of a heated controversy leading up to the 2024 Summer Olympics. Known for his remarkable skills, imposing presence, and vibrant personality, Embiid has become a polarizing figure in the world of basketball due to his decision to represent Team USA in the Olympics, rather than playing for France or his native Cameroon. Born in Yaoundé, Cameroon, Embiid's journey to basketball stardom began in his home country before moving to the United States to pursue his career. He became a naturalized French citizen in 2022, opening the door for him to potentially play for the French national team. However, in a surprising move, Embiid announced in 2023 that he would represent Team USA in the 2024 Olympics. Embiid's choice to play for the United States over Cameroon and France has sparked outrage and disappointment among fans and commentators. Many in Cameroon feel betrayed, seeing Embiid's decision as a rejection of his roots and a missed opportunity to elevate the profile of basketball in his homeland. Meanwhile, French basketball enthusiasts and officials, who had anticipated his contribution to their national team, view the decision as a significant loss. Critics argue that Embiid's decision undermines the spirit of national representation in sports. Playing for Team USA, a country with a historically dominant basketball program, rather than a less powerful nation like Cameroon or France, has been seen by some as a move driven by a desire for guaranteed success rather than a genuine connection to the country. Team USA is already considered a powerhouse in international basketball, and Embiid's addition further tilts the competitive balance in their favor. This has led to concerns about the fairness and competitiveness of the Olympic basketball tournament, with some fans and players expressing frustration over what they perceive as an uneven playing field. Joel Embiid's decision has undeniably affected his public image. While he remains one of the most talented and influential players in the NBA, his choice to play for Team USA has made him a target of criticism and resentment. In Cameroon, many feel abandoned by their basketball hero, and in France, there's a sense of missed opportunity and disappointment. Even within the United States, the move has sparked debate about the ethics of national representation in sports.Despite the backlash, Embiid has remained firm in his decision, stating that it was based on personal reasons and his desire to compete at the highest level. As the 2024 Olympics approach, the spotlight will be on Embiid not only for his performance on the court but also for the broader implications of his controversial decision. Whether he can redeem himself in the eyes of his critics and how this chapter will shape his legacy remains to be seen.

Playing for Cameroon would’ve been most ideal to represent his homeland but I understand the frustration many African athletes have with the lack of structure and support from their respective sports federations. France on the other hand has a competitive roster that could give the US a run for its money. When Joel passed that up, it confirmed to me that he doesn’t want to go the extra mile to win like in the NBA playoffs.

Regardless, all the successful (WEALTHY) people live the same way; the ones in Africa are not different. They live in the country with the best ease of business, including taxes, but have properties worldwide in places they love or admire. SOME educated people and the general public looking for better career opportunities and empowerment are leaving Africa. Successful people in Africa stay there because they are successful; there is no need to leave.

@@skiiytastic I appreciate your comment. But you belittled my take and then basically just agreed with me. A lot of successful people stay. A lot don’t. A greater percentage leave than most first world countries though. Because the living conditions in a very large percent of the continent are less than ideal. That is all we are both saying. I have family who live in rural north Africa. It is the dream of a massive portion of the population there to get an education and find meaningful work that pays well. Most people are more than open to the idea of leaving, they just can’t in their current position. There is not nearly as much opportunity in Africa as there is compared to places in America, Europe, lots of Asia, Australia, or NZ. In places in the world where the elite are so drastically wealthy compared to the poor, and they achieve this by taking advantage of the poor, those rich people won’t leave. If they earn their wealth in some other way, they leave.

@@BBallRambles your assumptions make no sense, how can most successful people want to leave Africa because there’s a greater population of people traveling out of Africa than other places. What’s the correlation between the two data points? Again you are misinformed we are not saying the same thing, you are adding in things like your opinions that you think are facts like “the living conditions in a very large percent of the continent are less than ideal”… they are less than ideal for you and your family that left, let me ask you something the president and cabinets of every president in Africa would you consider them successful?… because they live in their country of service but have properties elsewhere like most wealthy people. What about the various doctors that stay to work in the hospitals, just so you know how misinformed you are…what about the people who leave their careers in first world countries to teach or consult in a third world country are they part of those successful people leaving Africa… you are saying most successful people leave Africa im saying that is your opinion and statistically it is impossible for most successful people to want to leave Africa yet Africa is as developed as it is. I am saying all successful people stay in Africa and educated people and the general public are the ones looking for better opportunities. I know lots of kids from successful African families, they can experience the world in a much different way than some kid in a poor family, leaving their hometown is out of the question, there is always a family house there and every where else is places they go when they travel, so your point is pointless. You can be successful in whatever country you choose to as long as you remain law abiding and competent. If you are successful in that country why would you leave regardless if you are from that country or not.

They can represent if they were born there. But you don't have Amercan players representing Ireland or Germany or Italy because their grandparents came from there. The options should be country of birth or country of residence/citezenship and not country of descent. Look at Izzy Adesanya, born in Nigeria but represented New Zealand, but then gravitated back to Nigeria, because he felt more "welcomed" there. That should be the only two options.

Many have connections to their roots actually, its just a matter of convenience. You see a few choosing to play for their ancestor's country either because of the connection (ex: aubameyang) or practicality since they either won't suit up or will have a diminished role in a european country so they'll choose their parent's country for a bigger role and visibility (ex: brahim diaz)

Quite often these Africans living in Europe still have many cultural ties to their native country in Africa. It's just that they either join a European nation out of convenience (less travel time), better career opportunities (there's more attention on European tournaments than African ones) or more chance of winning a trophy (European teams are better in quality). However as soon as an African nation has a decent team, like Morocco, all the Africans (of Moroccan decent) join it instead of a European one.

While I would like the African-descent athletes to represent their native countries, they have a better chance at representing their country as an Individual and gain success. They can then use that success to boost their country. What should be talked about is how France has basically become a defacto African country, in terms of their "National" teams.

Cameroon is de facto half french, half british to this day, it's country with 5 or 6 groups of people living there which was never a country until french colonizers came there, they have nothing that bonds them together other than french rule they lived under, since 2017 there have been armed combat for independence from british rule, google up "Ambazonia", a country they created to free themselves but british responded with armed violence, only country that actually freed themselves was Ethiopia long long ago and Erithrea was never rly opressed under Italian rule, older people there still like Italy to this day because they built all the infrastructure there is and only took natural resources, they never massively enslaved or killed the native people, or it could be just that they did bring great food, Italy is forgiven for a lot of stuff over the years(including most part of WW2) just because their food is good, but also Italy was not a classic colonial force as it only formed itself as one country in 2nd part of 19th century, they wanted to create unity(something Musolini would go too much into later) with everyone, including their colonies

People wrongly assume that because Embiid is a French-speaking African that he was either born in France, lived in France, or had connections to France, but he doesn't. Embiid never lived in France, he doesn't have family there, he is more American than he is French by a mile. Unless you come from a country as poor as Cameroon you can't judge people for shopping around for better citizenship. We also need to acknowledge that France gave him his citizenship for equally selfish reasons, they wanted him to win basketball games for them. Embiid can't be faulted for taking a better offer from a country he actually has connections to. Embiid can be faulted for a lot of shit, but this isn't one of them. Granted I am upset we didn't get to watch Embiid, Wembanyama and Gobert take on Curry, LeBron and Durrant. This match-up would have been more interesting if the Americans were five years younger, but still would have been exciting.

Great vid, the premise was really good, but there’s a few inaccuracies: There’s goaltending in FIBA but the rules are slightly different. You can tap the ball while its on the rim but that’s it, the rest is the same as the NBA. Serbia was a household name in international basketball and Jokic did contribute yes but everybody knew about Serbia before Jokic. USA weren’t terrible in the WC because of size (they had JJJ & Kessler), but they lost because of they played terrible basketball. USA also lacked a lot of defensive effort. Also Andreas Obst destroyed the US not the Wagner bros. Willy Hernangomez was named MVP not both. Allez Les Bleus transletes to “Lets go the blues”, which is France nickname. Trump is not president.

"He has been the best player in basketball" On which planet you reside on? He is an ex MVP, universally acknowledged underserving of MVP award. And for this years MVP nobody even mentioned him as a serious contender.

choosing to play for a different country instead of his own is something, but promising a whole nation to run for them and leaving them behind just for the sake of winning gold is beyond embarrassment

Precious achuiwa at least repped Nigeria, I wish other players did the same for smaller countries. Joel should’ve showed love to Cameroon not France or USA.

Imagine how competitive the World Cup and Olympics would be if the African Players would play in their own home or naturally born country and I think that US would never get any Gold if that happens. I'm hoping that would happen soon

Nah we definitely would still win Gold. If anything itd probably make things less competitive because no Africans would be playing for European nations.

As a Frenchmen, I don't care. France has always fared better when their opponent is good. And having Embiid on the team would feel wrong, he never lived here ...

If you watch soccer this is nothing new. I remember when Diego Costa switched from Brazil to Spain. Just recentlyish Jamal Musiala switched from English to Germany. Most of the French national team should technically be playing for African countries.

That massive BS of being considered African-something is completely unknown on Europe.... It's a just American thing because otherwise the only Americans would be natives... If you're born in Greece you are actually Greek, and you should consider Aristotle as your ancestor as well, being black is a minor detail... Not black American consider Washington his ancestor, but only slaves... The minor detail there are black slave owners, just pretend there wasn't
