American whistleblower files complaint against India shrimp processing plant

An American whistleblower, who managed a shrimp processing plant in India, filed a complaint against the factory with U.S. regulators. The complaint was over alleged labor abuse, and alleged the company was underpaying workers and selling shrimp tainted with antibiotics banned by the FDA.

Also, people who comment on KZread without having a clue what they're talking about should have their account permanently muted, but this world is backwards. 🤷🏻‍♀️ As someone already said, whistleblowers can win a lot of money in court in the US - millions of dollars even. That's to _encourage_ people to be whistleblowers. The US government recognizes that whistleblowers both help expose corruption and also just the fact that whistleblowers exist helps to prevent a certain amount of corruption.

Sir, Idk how things happen in usa. Butindia is poor and we need this business. Last year only we started shrimp farming. I know their are problems. But our shrimps are freshest. We use only river water for it. Antibiotics used are human antibiotics NOT veterinary grade but actual human antibiotics. We feed cooked chicken/beef/fish/swine and processed(steam sterilized) domestic grade wastes only. Problem is water is polluted and if we use underground water it is costly as it consumes diesel fuel oil. Government doesn't help us. We would like to use ground water for shrimp as river water has lots of sewage. But you shouldn't worry as growing times are short in india, we use scientific hormones and scientific human grade antibiotics only. Infact our product doesn't absorb arsenic and Mercury like Vietnamese shrimp . We had it tested and govt lab says it's free of Hg/As/Pb . We are very thankful to big buyers like Walmart to come buy from us. Our quality of life is low so don't expect same standards for workers. How we provide air condion and cooling when we dont have any electricity connection itself? We have to bring small amount of ice from factory in town to cool down product and even then the buyers reject half our produce as spoiled. Sir please don't shame big companies, we are still improving if government gives us help we will be like you also.

Hello I am from where these shrimps are grown. I feel like this video needs the perspective of Indian farmers involved in this to be more balanced. What this video did not mention is that a couple years ago shrimp infections became big problem and so farmers started using antibiotics to protect their livelihood. The government is conducting research into reducing disease load among aquaculture regions. China buys more Indian shrimp than USA, and perhaps there these antibiotics are not banned. Most farmers also target to sell to Chinese market too. So there may be a shortage of antibiotic-free shrimp. Basically choice canning may have no choice but to buy shrimp with these antibiotics, if farmers have no choice but to use them.

It's the job of American employer to keep regular checks/audit and deny antibiotics shrimp. If the indian suppliers doesn't comply, go to other supplier. If American employer just looking for big gains due to cheap labour, then it falls on him. I bet if American employer does keep one supervisor here and ask for protective gears only allowed then indian supplier will say there will be added cost which American employer needs to accept. The fact that auditor was being given 300k simply says, it all happened with the approval of American employer. Infact he said, send it. Fun fact - most of the American medicine imported from India. And strictly made as per guidelines from FDA. So, if india can do this, it sure can provide requested food production and packing standards provided the American employer asks for it and keeps checks. After all, we all want safe food for our families.
