The quiz author is obviously not British. She does not understand that the term Commonwealth (of Nations) refers to a collection of nations which chose to be in association with the UK after the British Empire ended. She also does not understand the difference between the Commonwealth of Nations and the Commonwealth Realms (the former British Empire nations which retain the UK monarch as head of state).

Hong Kong was not a British colony. It was a British Dependent Territory from 1841 to 1997, apart from a period of Japanese occupation from 1941 to 1945 during the Pacific War. Someone who was a British overseas territories citizen by connection with Hong Kong was able to register as a British national (overseas) before 1 July 1997. However, their passports were only similar to UK passports in appearance and did not bestow full UK citizenship or full rights granted to usual UK citizens.

Mary Shelley was married to Percy Bysshe Shelley, the English poet and her writing of " Frankenstein" was a sort of competition or game she and the other writers engaged in on holiday in italy I think. 6:13 A few points: 1. The law that people cite for this is meant to give state funerals to people acting in an official capacity who die in royal palaces, and technically the houses of parliament are royal palaces. 2. That means it's not illegal 3. It also means there's no restriction against the houses of parliament being listed as a place of death 4. The law itself was repealed almost immedoately after enacting because it caused confusion(did official duties to the crown mean the janitor gets a state funeral? How does that work if the family want a private funeral? Does the law by codifying it exclude the royal family since they're not working? Etc).

To be accurate, King Henry VIII was Catholic, but he wanted to divorce his wife and the Church wouldn’t allow it, so he deleted that rule, broke away from the Pope and renamed the Church as the Church of England, and appointed the Royal family as the custodians, so that his descendants would always retain control of it. That’s why, to this day, King Charles is the latest Royal descendant to take over as the Head of the Church of England. It’s also worth noting that having divorced his first wife, Henry proceeded to remarry five more times. Here’s the list: King Henry VIII's Wives in Order: Catherine of Aragon (Divorced) Anne Boleyn (Beheaded) Jane Seymour (Died) Anne of Cleves (Divorced) Catherine Howard (Beheaded) Catherine Parr (Survived)

I was taught 25% Still a LOT higher than Covid's 1% So countries like the UK with 200k Covid deaths would be looking at 15 million deaths if the Black plague reoccurred without modern medicine and hygiene. Depends very much on public hygiene. Islamic communities in Europe such as Spain, Bosnia, Bulgaria and Romania were largely spared as they cleaned away the trash in the streets daily meaning fewer rats & fleas. Venice being a canal city had no underground sewers for rats to live in, so again they were also largely spared. These 'clean' areas had much lower fatalities than 25% which is an average figure over the entire continent. Many other cities across Europe were unsanitary, throwing all their garbage into the street, attracting rats. Their mortality rate was a lot higher. Possibly up to 60%. But the average over Europe was 25%.

There are literally thousands of people in line for the British Throne, Ryan, including all the Royal Families of Europe and beyond. Now that Charles III is king, his eldest son, Prince William (who is nowadays normally known as The Prince of Wales) is next in line, followed by his three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis in order of their births. After that comes Charles' younger son, Prince Harry, and his two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. After that, things start getting really complicated, because everyone was born before the Commonwealth laws of succession were changed in 2011 (and came into force in 2013) and males came before females, in order of their legitimate births. Also, a number of people who had been skipped because they were, or had become Catholics, or had not sought the formal approval of the Sovereign (as required by the Royal Marriages Act, 1772, which remained in force until 2013; were reinstated, this adding many more people to the list that was already approaching 9000 members... Hence, although Princess Anne (known as The Princess Royal) was the second child of Elizabeth II, her younger brothers and their families are placed above her in the line of succession. So Prince Andrew comes after Princess Lilibet - followed by his elder daughter, Princess Beatrice and her daughter, Sienna Mapelli-Mozzi; and then Andrew's younger daughter, Princess Eugenie and her sons, August, and Ernest, Brooksbank. Then comes QEII's youngest son Prince Edward, (Duke of Edinburgh) and his two children, James, Earl of Wessex and Lady Louise Mountbatten -Windsor (these two do have princely titles, but choose not to use them). Only then, does The Princess Royal come after Lady Louise, followed by her son, Mr Peter Phillips and his daughters, and then by his sister, Zara Tindall, and her children... After that comes The Earl of Snowdon and his family; then his sister, Lady Sarah Chatto and her family. Snowdon and Lady Sarah were the children of QEII's younger sister, who predeceased her by 22 years, the late Princess Margaret, who was the younger daughter of King George VI. Likewise, the descendants of QEII's Royal Uncles and Aunt - who were the children of King George V, follow them - and there are four such titled individuals still alive, who were first cousins of QEII. They themselves don't follow their birth patters, but that of their Royal Parents; hence Prince Richard (Duke of Gloucester) is younger than all of his Kent cousins, but is placed before them - with his children and grandchildren; because his father was older than theirs! Then comes the first family of major Catholic reinstatements! Prince Eddy, the Duke of Kent, was never skipped because his wife was Protestant when she married him and as she herself is not in the line of succession, it doesn't matter that she later converted... Both of their sons and some of their grandchildren exempted themselves by converting - but are now restored, thanks to the 2011 Act. Their daughter and her family of course, come after their two sons, and theirs. Prince Michael of Kent (the duke's brother) was exempted for a while because he married a Catholic, but he has since been reinstated - and his children and grandchildren were never exempt, as far as I know. Finally, there is the duke and Michael's sister, Princess Alexandra, and her family. During QEII's reign, all of these were considered to be members of the extended Royal Family, as indeed was George Lascelles, Earl of Harewood, who was the eldest grandchild of King George V through his only daughter, Princess Mary (Princess Royal from 1931 until her death in 1965, and Countess of Harewood). Thereafter it gets ever-more complicated because various of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were/are exempted for reasons of illegitimacy; and some are into hippier side of life and were therefore NOT considered to be members of the RF! Still there are living descendants of Edward VII, Queen Victoria and George III however, of which a handful are sometimes included at some of the more important RF events! Thanks to the historic custom of arranged marriages, all of the Royal Families of Europe are also on the Line of Succession to the British Throne, now including large numbers of Catholics who had previously been exempted!

The Black Death thing is really random. This just varied pretty strongly across Europe, different regiosn within the same countries and so on. They didn't even bother to define a time period. On top of it the source situation isn't always great and you can't always be sure what people were really dying from as there used to be many different deadly diseases back then.

When Hong Kong left the British Commonwealth, it was a major event, Mainland China took ever as the agreement of "The 99 Year Lease" ended, the treaty that ended the War of the Mandarins, or "The Opium War". China fought the British to ban opium as it was poisoning their people, but the UK insisted on trading in opium as it suited their trade of tea for opium. The British were the best drug dealers in history. Drugs, druging an entire colony made Britain rich. The deal was the UK could keep Hong Kong, the rest of China had independence. When the lease was over at the end of the 1990s, Hong Kong really didn't want to leave. It ended up being a really sad event. The Hong Kong people never really adapted to being part of China and would dearly love to come back to the UK

I'm pretty sure the answer on Black Death was wrong, according to Google 30-40% died in England, can't believe the rest of UK would have bounce that down to 20%. Agree with Ryan's complaint re Pounds/Pence. All these questions are based on doing the quiz at a given point in time, when that is true it makes sense to put the point in time in the Quiz. Rubbish quiz, but well done Ryan..

@michaelrogers2080 I'm sorry the question was not specific, not sure what they were considering to be Britain/British. But I think my comment stands. I'm fairly sure Ireland was not affect by the Black Death, nor any of the Islands around Great Britain. also believe the population of Great Britain and England was such that a 40% death rate in England would not equate to a 20% death rate across Great Britain even if all deaths were in England. I stand by my assertion the quiz answer was wrong and the questions badly constructed. But that Ryan did a reasonable job.

Yes Hong Kong was a british colony. Thats also actually the reason why Hong Kong is a democratic city and its also the somewhat only place near China where you can experience China with all the western apps and many other sites. Like google, facebook, Instagram etc. Its also very attractive for businesses cuz its a very strong economy along with Taiwan which is also a very popular Chinese influence country for businesses and tourism. Also Taiwan is also open to the Western world so you can just use everything you can do at home in terms of sites and apps in Taiwan. China on the other hand is different. It has a censorship which can block western apps like the ones i’ve allready told in this comment and many other apps linked to Google and Meta. There are some exceptions tho. Facetime, messages from iphone, skype and some Office 365 apps also work. For the others they have their OWN APPS FOR IT.

Technically the "United States" wasn't a British Colony... some territories of what came to be the United States were, others were given to settle a treaty (i.e. Florida), bought (i.e. Louisiana, Alaska) or annexed (i.e. Texas). The Louisiana territory alone doubled the size of the U.S. at that time, and in that bit of the U.S. there were already territories that were never part of the British territories.

The one about Henry VIII is a funny story. He wanted to divorce his first wife, but the catholic church didn't allow that. He may be the origin of the phrase: "F**k, marry, kill"... He had six wives, executed one or two, and they all died. And he 'did' some more women, as kings would do, like, grab them by the feline metaphor... I got almost as many as you wrong, and I should know, Denmark has lived well off selling bacon the the British.

Considering the question as to colonial Britain, Ryan is pretty sure that Bermuda was a colony and he knows that the United States was a colony. This should immediately tell him that by far the likeliest answer is "all of the above," within the chaps limits of his uncertainty - which are low. A bit of deductive Logic, Ryan, mate. ( if you know or are confident enough to say that both Bermuda and the US were colonies, you don`t have to know anything about Hong kong to deduce that exactly `all of the above` is the only correct answer ). I do like the question about what is legal / illegal activity in the HOC. I couldn`t make my mind up between `die` and `cough.` What people do in the HOC and what is illegal to do in the HOC are two quite seperate things. I`m sure all sorts of things that are illegal go on in the Houses of Parliament. An irrelevant fact, mind you. For a few seconds I was of an ambiguous mind as to whether the Death Penalty is legal in the UK - I was thinking in terms of the punishment for an act of treason here in the UK. But then I considered that if the Death Penalty was- and is - legal it would open to Judges to pass the sentence of death as a legal remedy to a crime comitted, which forced me to chose `false.` This bloke did well enough in this quiz - and I found it most amuzing when he became pissed-off upon arrival with a wrong answer. I loved seeing the pictures of the coffin of Richard III on the Internet. There his funeral carriage was towed toward his resting place ( I think by horse and carriage ). The dates of his lifetime were there on his simple wooden coffin : " Richard III. 1452 - 1485". Burried on the 26th of March, 2015. This American chap is having us on. He pretends he doesn`t know half the things he does. He often talks himself out of a correct answer.
