A match lasts 80 minutes, 40 minutes each half with a 10 minute break. Big rule you can only pass backwards. Rugby world cup soon my man good time to get into it.

When they score it's called a Try, the End Zone in Rugby is called the In-Goal Area. In order to score, they have to 'touch' the ball 'down' in that area... I emphasised those two words, as it's actually where American Football gets the phrase 'Touchdown' from, one of the few direct links back to American Football's roots in Rugby left.

Critical point in a try is that the scorer must be exerting downward pressure on the ball - a try will be disallowed if the player loses control at that point. It’s certainly a tough game but there are rules about tackling to try to reduce risk, for example not charging towards a player and leading with your shoulder, risking head injury - that’s usually a sending off offence. Tackling someone in the air and allowing them to fall dangerously is also a no-no.

There are two halves each of forty minutes. No time outs or stoppages other than for infringements or injuries etc. 15 players a side who play all the game unless substituted and all both attack and defend. The ball can be passed only backwards, but can be kicked forwards. American football developed from rugby but was changed by your officials who considered it too dangerous, hence many things you can see which are familiar. The World Cup is on this autumn in France, sadly the USA team didn’t qualify. Check out a video on the laws of the game and you’ll understand much more.👍

Imagine thinking Rugby is too dangerous, then put protective gear on people so they can go harder and sustain more injuries more frequently than in the sport you thought "was too dangerous". Only in America.. It's like how they changed bread because "money". No logic, just for profit. Fun fact: super bowl consists of 83% commercials, their biggest "sport" is just a promotional tool. Sad.

Fantastic game , played when younger but I now (50) only weigh in at 70 KG 168 Lbs 6ft tall , My team used to rely on the fact I was the quickest on the field and really really didn't want to be hit by someone twice my weight , so if they gave me the ball sheer fear would drive me on even faster , and when those twice my weight guys started to catch up with my diminishing speed I called it a day

10:13 The green team is The Mighty Springboks (current World Champs). The All Blacks are seen as the best in the world. When these two clash, echoes can be heard around the world: South Africa versus New Zealand, the immovable object vs the unstoppable force. Rugby's a sport in other countries, it's a religion in SA & NZ. I'm a massive Springbok fan - and to all my Kiwis out there, See ya in church mates! Kia Ora!

Also there are 2 different versions of Rugby shown here. Rugby League and Rugby Union. Slight variations with Union being a more fast paced game because they don't stop to line up again for the next play - they "stacks on the guy with the ball" and ruck and scrimmage from there.

The favourites for the tournament: France (host nation), South Africa (defending champions), Ireland (current #1 in the world), New Zealand (historically great team, top rivalry with South Africa). Great vid dude! Here in Wales, in the UK, our national rugby team are the closest thing to true warriors we have outside the military. They're our heroes. The whole country stops whenever they play. I may be biased, but the Welsh national anthem, sang before every Wales match, is one of the most spine tingling, emotional expressions of national unity. When it's sang at our national stadium, the Millennium Stadium, there's nothing that sounds like it. The World Cup starts real soon, a few weeks. It's definitely something you'd enjoy. It seems pretty confusing at first, but the basics are easy enough to figure out just by watching an entire game. It's the closest thing to unarmed warfare there is!!😁

As an European it was the other way around. I know Rugby and Football like it is played all over the world. But for me it was like what is American Football? Its like they took Rugby changed the rules and put their players in armor and gave it a weird named like Football. While it got nothing to do with foot play and a ball and when they discovered that Football was already a thing they just called Football Soccer. This realisation for me when I was young was like the world on its head.

3:15 The way you get the ball in the zone do matter for 2 reason: 1st you need to touch the ball down to get point granted and we call it this a "try" (5pts). And 2nd, similarly to footballl you can take a kick between the posts for what we call a "conversion" (2pts), but the kick has to be taken in line with the place you touch the ball down so the closer you are from the posts the better. 7:29 The official time for a game in 2 half of 40min of effective time and 20min break between them. So optimally it's 1h50, but this always a bit longer to watch a full game due to time off for penalties and other stuff , so I think 2h/2h10 would be considered a normal game. 8:54 This was a lineout , a way to restart play when ball go out of bonds, and before the interception, the plan for the team with the ball was probably to pass the ball to a player with a long range at kicking (and not near the defensive line to avoid getting blocked) to send the ball as far from their end zone as possible. I hope it help with some of your questions. The video you watch , and what most people refer to as "rugby" , is rugby union. But another codes exist called 'league" and this video linked below is the best that I know about which covers basics rules of both codes at the same time,so I highly recommend you to watch it to get to know the rules of both rugby codes. kzread.info/dash/bejne/hpmIpJuHlKTFdps.html

It has been suggested to me, by people who know, that the use of Helmets and pads, and gloves in baseball, was intended to keep sport for the elite. the poor couldn't afford the equipment. Also Rugby, traditionally, was played on Saturdays. Coal miners, from Northern England, who worked 6 days a week, went to the Union and asked for this to change, to Sundays, so they can play. The Union refused saying Rugby was a gentleman's game. The coal miners changed the rules, slightly, and so was born Rugby League. Hence the saying "Rugby is a Gentlemans game for Bastards and League is a Bastards game for Gentleman"

Scoring in Rugby: a Try (you must touch the ball to the ground in the end zone while in full possession) = 5 points After a Try, you get the opportunity to kick through the uprights. It is called a Conversion. It is like a PAT in American football. It counts as 2 points if you get it. Penalty = you can choose to attempt a kick to get the ball through the upright if you think you are in range = 3 points if you get it. It is also possible to score 3 points from a drop kick which is what you saw. A guy kicking from his hands through the upright from free play. Not frequently done though.

Union has rucks and mauls League had scrums and tackles. I would have to have a lot more time to let you know the differences. Rugby league is the best game ever. I go to see my team play every week. My team is the Sydney Roosters they play in red white and blue. I moved from Sydney 2 hours up the eastern coast but I make the 4 hours round trip to see my Roosters play each week.

Its called a 'try' (5 points) when they get over the try line. They can then go for a 'conversion' which adds on 2 points, if they kick between the posts. They kick the conversion from the place they went over the try line ( so if the try is under the posts they can kick for a conversion directly Infront). Points can also be gained from a 'drop goal' ( 3 points) during open play or a penalty goal awarded by the ref for incorrect play. Ps. the referees are totally in charge .. no messing!!

Where the player puts the ball down after crossing the base line, is the position out on the goal kicking line the Goal kicker must kick from. If the player running with the ball, runs around and puts it down directly behind the goal posts the goal kicker can kick the ball directly from in front of goal, rather than from nearer the side line, which is a much more acute and difficult angle.

It's so funny to see someone wonder about something that is so familiar to me ! I'm French, grew up in the Southwest of France, rugby country, and I am granddaughter, daughter, sister, niece and cousin of rugby players ! One of my cousins played for the French national team, and was later in life coach to the reserve national team. There's a saying about rugby : It's a hoodlum's sport played by gentlemen. And no, the parts where you see the players start to fight, that is absolutely not allowed, but happens, and yes the players usually get sanctionned 😂. There's one big rule in rugby, possibly even bigger than don't pass the ball forward : you don't discuss the referee's decisions, and you never argue with him. That's a big no ! And although rugby is a contact sport, the aim is to avoid contact, and put the ball down behind the goal line, then have your best kicker put it between the goal posts. Try watching the rugby World Cup that starts in a few days. You will see some pretty good games I think. Of course I'll be routing for the French team, we have a pretty good one this year. Opening game, France vs New Zealand, next friday. If you have never seen a rugby game, try catching this one, the New Zealand team, the All Blacks, always do a haka, a very impressive war chant, before their games, and it's always a very powerful moment. And we Frogs usually defiantly stand our ground. And occasionaly beat them... The All Blacks are often the best team, but this year they are floundering a bit, and got trounced by South Africa a week ago, 35 to 7, so they will probably be ready to chew the French and spit fire and brimstone, that should be an interesting game...

Fun fact both rugny and football originated from the same sport i forget the name but it was played in medieval times where the area between two villages was used as a pitch they split into two separate sports because arguments would break out about kicking and running with the ball obviously footballcame from kicking between the two villages and rugby from running with it in your arms. The sport was surprisingly played by both up an lower class people at the same time and class was not recognised during matchs. Many People died and some sustained horrendous injuries fromthe pile ups that often occurred.

In Rugby head high tackles are foul plays in which they are benched for 10 minutes(yellow card). Even chest high tackles are considered head high currently. This is to prevent neck and/or head injuries. If you watch some old replays from 10-20 years ago men's necks snap back so hard from the impact its surprising they aren't paralyzed.

As a new American rugby freshling I'd suggest the USMLR video about the rules: kzread.info/dash/bejne/o46klq2vecuoes4.html There are other rules videos as well, but this one is tailored for the US audience. Also, find out the team closest to you and give them some support. Season ended for 2023, but will pick up again next year (After the NFL season ends). USA is hosting the 2031(Mens) and 2033 (Womans) World cups, so would be nice if you guys grow support for your national team (though they are not very well ranked at the moment 😅)

As a kid, there was always a war of sorts between fans of Rugby Union (the sport above) and Rugby League (which uses tackles instead of rucks). The only crossover was that the same fans also followed Australian Rules Football. A few years ago, after I'd stopped followed sport of any variety for several years before, there was a huge riot at one of the Rugby League matches in Sydney, leading to the cancellation of games for quite some time after that. When I read about it, I cannot say that I was surprised given how the host club always seemed to always have overly 'passionate' fans.

The ball can only passed backwards but can go forward if kicked . Fighting On the pitch is illegal and can lead to being sent off . Its a game of two half's its about 90 minutes 45 a half, plus injury time . If you think this is crazy . Check out women's rugby..

There are two forms of rugby. Rugby league and rugby union I don't know much about union, but in league there are two 40 minute halves with about a 15 break in between each half and there are 13 players on the field from each team at a time

You don't know much about the difference , the main difference in League only allowed 6 passes . no rucks or mauls and they have girly scums and no line outs . a different game compared to Union . I was prop forward in Union .

You are only allowed to tackle someone in possession of the ball. If a fight breaks out, they all tend to pile in, as it makes its difficult for the ref to penalise anyone.

Top class rugby is great to watch. Ball can only be passed (thrown) backwards although you can kick it forward. If a player fumbles the ball and it goes forward (a knock on) then it’s a penalty. Watch the World Cup…fantastic standard and some exciting games

the scoring is a try thats placing the ball down in what football you call the end. kicking between the posts 3 different types of kicks 2 points after scoring a try. A dropkick where tke player drops the ball in front of him self it hits the ground he then kicks it . Lastly a penlty the play is placed on the feild in a kicking T and the player has to kick te ball between the posts

These videos show a mixture of Rugby Union and Rugby League, two very different games of footy. You should have a look at the AFL footy, they make those big jumps seen in basketball look like a leapfrog game.

Rugby union and Rugby League do not stop every time there is a tackle and have a meeting afterward, you also have to ground the ball over the try line, not just get the ball over the line. If you are tackled with the ball you can struggle out of it and pass it to another player.

A game is for 2x 40 minute. A game is just over 80mins in total. It isn't like NFL where a game takes hours to complete, this is pretty much non stop game play. The ref's will generally try and "play the advantage" instead of blowing a whistle when a penalty or infraction occurs to keep game play moving. The World Cup Rugby is starting in September (once every 4 years), so get into it and choose a country.. I suggest New Zealand (All Blacks) or South Africa (Springboks), these are the two best teams in the world. Watching a whole game is great.
