Well, it's also illegal in American Football to tackle anyone except the ball carrier: it's called "holding," and draws a penalty. You can block someone who isn't carrying the ball, however: this is illegal in rugby.

@@DieFlabbergastJust for clarity, there's no requirement to get out of the way. You're not allowed to deliberately step in front of a player in order to slow him down. You often see players chasing back after a kick more slowly than they might in order to slow down attacking players attempting to get to the ball receiver. Referees generally allow this as long as the defender doesn't change direction in order to impede.

As a dedicated English Rugby fan i am genetically programmed to hate the French team for many, many, many reasons. However I do have some grudging respect for Antoine Dupont the French captain in the 2nd clip when he holds the Irish guy from the try line, he is what Rugby is all about full commitment 100% of the time. You have no idea how much that hurts my English pride to say.😉

As a dedicated English rugby fan I have a special place for the French. I started watching international rugby obsessively in 1966 and I when I saw the French run onto the pitch for the first time I was spellbound. @@Josian-ps7fb I really loved the Women's Six Nations decider between England and France in April. I sat with a lovely young French woman (who spoke pretty good English; fortunately) and two friends and it was a great game and great fun. Abbie Dow, as is her habit, scored a fine try against France, which they appeared to accept as one of those unavoidable things in life and sport! I was also impressed by the amount of (expensive) beer they poured into themselves without missing a step! BTW, I hope there is some chance for Antoine Dupont to take some further part; it would be such a waste if he cannot!

Another thing to point out as the scale does not translate from the screen. Most of the players are 15 Stone up to 24 stone +. There are 14 pounds to a stone, so majority of the players are 210 pounds plus. That is a lot of weight travelling at speed. Also, the ball can only be passed backwards, kicking and running with the ball is the only option for moving it forward.

Just FYI - the Rugby World Cup in Fall of 2031 is in the USA! Be sure to check that out, and to check out Major League Rugby in the meantime. Some legendary players to look into: Richie McCaw (NZL) Dan Carter (NZL) Jonah Lomu (NZL) (RIP) Bryan Habana (RSA) Ardie Savea (NZL) (active) Bakkies Botha (RSA) Eben Etzebeth (RSA) (active) Antoine Dupont (FRA) (active) Jerry Collins (NZL) (RIP) I realize I'm biased (as a Kiwi) towards NZL (New Zealand, AKA the All Blacks), and I've certainly left out a lot of players from here and abroad, but they aren't known as "The Mighty All Blacks" for nothing. They're the winningest international sports team of all time, with nearly 80% over more than 100 years - and that's higher in the modern era. If you want to see some of the fiercest games/highlights, you need look no further than the All Blacks (New Zealand/NZL) vs the Springboks (South Africa/RSA). There is no greater rivalry in world rugby.

Rugby is a combination of soccer and football. Kicking the ball makes it like soccer in that the ball is played on and not the player. A player holding the ball is the only player allowed to tackled. No blocking of players without the ball is allowed either. Once the ball carrier is tackled the ball is still live and has to be released by the tackled player to keep the play going. Not releasing the ball is a penalty and results in a penalty kick or a scrum.

You can only tackle the ball carrier in rugby. You will see players tackle someone a split second after they have passed or kicked, because the tackler was already 'committed' to it and couldn't pull out. That is legal, but after a very short time it becomes clear it is a "late tackle" and that is illegal and will be punished (as will an "early tackle" designed to take out a runner just before he/she gets the ball).

Tackle the ball carrier, do not strike or tackle from the neck up. Illegal to spear someone into the ground (pick them up and drive them headfirst). Tackling off the ball is at the least advantage to the other team while the game plays on (ie if a 50/50 situation comes up, it goes to the team with advantage) and often more severe. Head tackles accidental are a yellow card at least, and deliberate is an instant red for the tackling player and off the field, bringing the team down a man on field. Head safety is quite important in the rules of rugby, and in the practice (tackles are trained to be with the shoulders and arms and never the head, with targets being from shoulders down. Stuff happens in the muck, though). If you're holding the ball and lose it forward, it is a turnover to the other team. If you're tackled and lose it forward, same. If you attempt a catch and lose it forward, same. If you pass across the field and it goes forward, same. However, off the feet is fair game and the ball remains in play while it is on the field.

We had a similar situation in the Australian army when US troops were over here for a training exercise. The boys acquired some grid iron gear and played a game against them. The Aussie boys got their arses handed to them . The following week they played rugby - the Americans threw in the towel after 20 minutes. I didn't play because I'm a woman and neither country had enough women on the exercise to field a team. Would have been a great experience though.

Blocking obstructing or tackling any player who doesn't have the ball is illegal in rugby, so unlike American footballl, you can't run interference for the player with the ball. The most useful thing teammates can do is to run just off the shoulder of the ball carrier to give passing options.

You do get players intereferring 'subtly' but quite frankly it's hardly worth it. It's so hard to get away with it with three officials and TMOs watching like hawks.

You can't tackle him because the objective is the ball not the man, so if he kicks it you have to beat him to the ball.

You can only tackle a mam in possession of the ball. Any player can kick the ball forward, however the team mates of the kicker must be behind them when they kick if they want to run forward and play the ball. In the current rules any tackle where you make contact with the head is a straight red card If you drop the ball and it goes forward, it's called a knock on and play stops and your opponent gets the ball. The Ruck (when some is tackled and you see the mass of bodies on the floor) has about a 100 rules many of which are complex and cause debate even amongst those of us who have played the game

Ah no as that would be a forward pass which is illegal. The ref will stop play and you turn the ball over to the opposition.

You can kick it over the defenders head and try to recover it, but the Fullback position is there to try and defend against that so there is some risk dependent upon where you do it.

Yes , a kick and chase basically means you can't get tackled even tho you had the ball in hand before that , it's not used that much because of the ball's oval shape it can be very difficult to catch it afterwards

I don't know about that: you see grubbers kicked forward quite frequently these days, but kicking "up and over" (kicking over the defender's head so that he has to stop, turn around and go after the ball) is more commonly used.

  • @kingspeechless1607

    @kingspeechless1607

There is more kicking in recent seasons because of changes in laws that are perceived to be less favourable to ball carriers. Additionally, grubbers and chips are extra options for unlocking well-organised defences.
