And since 1982, a 200-nautical-mile (370-kilometre) exclusive economic zone has been the international standard under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

What's interesting about that video is that the ships shown in the video were in fact involved with the cod wars. Tho not all of them.

Greenland became part of the danish kingdom (Not colonised, as the norse settlers settled there before the inuits) arround 1721 when a missionary was sent up there to reclaim it an make the people convert to the danish folk-chuch. Im Greenlandic-Inuit myself.

No, it was part of the de-jure kingdom of Norway which was a kingdom held by the Danish King. After The Napoleonic wars Sweden wanted Norway, but not the Atlantic territoties of Iceland and Greenland, so it was made De-jure part of Denmark.@@drSvensen

@@MachivelianBear It was discovered and populated by Norwegians and used to be under the Norwegian crown before the Kalmar union. Then it was stolen by Denmark when the Danish occupation of Norway ended.

Important point: This was not a shooting "war", it was a diplomatic dispute that in the end changed the International Laws of the Sea. If the first battle had been "weapons free", Iceland would have lost immediately - but we had the "Might of being Right".

If you want to learn more about the cod wars I recommend Johnny Harris' "The fish and chips wars" video. It goes into a bit more detail than this video...

Icelandic Codwars benefitted the whole world They fought for every mile and after each victory the World gained those Miles Outside their own coast.. now All countries that have Shoreline have their own Ocean territories up to 200 Miles 🤔

As I understand Iceland held America to ransom, threatening to side with Russia in the Cold War. And Iceland is considered strategically placed. Without the stupid Cold War between US and USSR British fishing ports wouldn't have lost their industry. Another from same period - Why didn't Britain fight in Vietnam

I mean no they still would’ve lost it just a lot later. As of today the exclusive waters thing is about 200 miles give or take, this was ratified by the UN and applies to all countries, albeit some that are really close obviously have to work things out if said boundaries would overlap

@@poggies7639 The law later changed because of the war though? There may have been some later dispute that could have impacted on the law in some way, but we don't know how that would have worked out. 200 miles is a big area.

Great Britain did fight in vietnam, but they just fought against the Japanese and they were very succesful at it. They would probably have won if the US and French didn't force them to leave, letting France take over who performed terribly in the war until USA stepped in and did nothing great either.

I don't think we would've sided with them per say but rather be completely neutral. So either side could sail around the arctic or be banned entirely. However the former would be more likely since the coast guard's soul purpose was to "guard" the island against invasion.

Interesting point not mentioned, that all countries now have a 200 mile claim on waters round them, ratified by UN. Hence the difficulty the European Union has with UK over Brexit. Remember the cod wars, just a stand off. Greenland is, probably going to be independent from Denmark. USA were trying to buy it from Denmark!!! That went down, like a lead balloon. Good friends with Iceland now.
