What McJ hasn't seemingly grasped is that following the war, we entered into the "Cold War" period, so the occupying armies of the Us, UK, Francce and Russia were essentially there in force, protecting the transition from a Nazi State, and this lasted for fifty years or thereabouts. The US (as usual) took the priority position, especially because there was literally and physically an "Iron Curtain" dividing West Germany from East Germany -placed there by the Russians. All the western forces had bases all over West Germany, and are still used today by American and British troops jointly with German troops. Without them being there, the likelihood is that the Russians would invade at some point. It is therefore a common practice for US troops (and their families) to visit the UK, but unless there is some special occasion, US troops are not allowed to enter the UK in uniform.

@@user-zu6ir6kj5g you’re right about energy and supermarkets, public transport is inexpensive compared to most of the UK, but property prices affect most things. Back then, Germany was split into West Germany - democratic, part of NATO, definitely a Western nation - and East Germany - communist, part of the Russian-dominated Europe. It was basically the front line in the Cold War. Because of that, most American troops in Europe were in West Germany, waiting for the USSR to invade from East Germany. There were a lot of Airbases in the UK which was well in-range of West Germany and would probably be invaded after mainland Europe had already been conquered. So USAF based in the UK and US Army (really, all NATO Armies) in West Germany. So most Forces by count of personelle would be in West Germany, but still quite a few in the UK (and places in between).
In the US if someone gets bad news about a death or such or is involved in a not too serious accident they immediately offer them Xanax or similar. In the UK we offer a cup of sweet tea.
In higher latitudes, you get longer days in the summer, which is nice. But the short winter days, can get you down.

West Germany hosted both a very big US army and BAOR (British Army Of the Rhine) in the Cold War. A lot of middle aged Americans who as children had parents serving abroad will recall living in Germany and maybe attending school there or in Britain.
TheGermans have an important base. Many British solders go to Germany for training etc.
There are USA bases in Germany and Britain, there's a U.S. airbase not far from me. Touching on the subject of happy countries, stress plays a large part, America revolves around work, making money for your company, generating debt (30% of gofundme is for medical needs) it is not healthy but is considered UnAmerican to question that. America is so rich that tomorrow the government could bring in universal healthcare and pick up the tab while forcing hospital to lower the excessive amounts they charge (or face millions in fines), they could legislate a maximum working week of 40 hours, basic workers rights, paid holidays and paid sick leave and still be the richest country in the world and possibly be the number 1 happiest... but the goverment is never going to put citizen happiness above big business and big pharma profits.

Very difficult to define a country in such a short question which is also generalized but some good attempts. Germany is the go to for the U.K. and the U.S. military in which history plays a part. When i was young some of my brothers friends worked at one of two U.S.A.F. bases in R.A.F. Upper Heyford and R.A..F. Croughton and my sister married an American airman from Upper Heyford. I believe Croughton is now a satellite communication base.
"My cheeseburger was expensive" says it all tbh. My dad was in the army and we lived in Germany in the early 60s, moved back to england in 64, then he was sent to Cyprus for a few months.
You seem a very level headed young man, sadly many of your fellow countrymen/women not so when it comes to what happens in the world beyond your two land borders or shorelines. We don’t still live in caves, we are and always will be part of Europe we only left the European market place ( EU ).

Britain was never owned by the EU, they wanted to but we fought it, that’s why we still have the pound and not the euro, we went in wanting to be partners but the EU started getting possessive and wanted everything doing there way and the public started demanding that Britain should leave so that why we had the vote on if we should stay or not

Several votes over the years . The very first was a proposal for a single trading market ,so we joined the Common Market in 1973. Then politicians in Europe, as is always their way, saw that greater revenue meant more political power and pushed it in such a way that it became( in their eyes) one huge Union ,with the laws passed in Brussels and gradually the countries involved lost a good deal of independence with regard to laws which pertained to just their citizens . Also ,a lot of discomfort about the amount of administration necessary ,as since 1993 the European Parliament moves lock, stock and barrel every month between Brussels and Strasburg.
@dee2251

@@Jill-mh2wnthe first ref in 1975 asked us if we wanted to Remain, or Leave the Common Market aka EEC, a trade only agreement, knowing full well it would become a political union. We were already in the Common Market prior to that. It became the fully political EU in 1992 after the signing of ‘The Maastricht Treaty’ under John Major. No-one ever voted to join the EU and we had to wait 40+ years for another ref on June 23rd 2016 to make that decision.
American troops were based in West Germany and West Berlin from WW2 right up to the 1980s.
The UK left the EU on that date but we were/are still bound by some of their rules and agreements. There's still treaties and agreements to be signed which isn't easy because the EU are still butt hurt.
The EU thing, in the beginning the EU didn't want Britain to be involved in it. Then the EU got annoyed that Britain wanted to leave, mainly because Britain was one of the main contributing factions/countries towards the EU (money wise). It's still perplexing to some degree to me that people want to go back to it. The GDP gradually rose in Britain above afterwards, even after that little blip that happened. Independent trading happened, through military and such. Basically building decent submarines, instead of those diesel powered submarines that the EU wanted to build for the Kiwis etc. In other words, Brussels beginning numpties.
Don't think we officially ever left just an illusion by making things difficult gives the illusion we left.
The politicians have never implemented brexit, just left us in a state of limbo. While we are still signed up to the echr, the European union can still tell us what we can and cannot do.

That older guy at the beginning, where you replayed him a couple of times, seems to have no idea of the history of the United Kingdom. When the European Union was formed on November 1, 1993 in the Netherlands, everyone was hopeful that it would work well for everyone. Alas, as time went on, the UK started to see that they had lost a lot of their control over their own people, that laws were starting to change, that they were being pressured to relinquish control of more and more things, and then discussions in UK Parliament began, mainly about the benefits Vs the losses, about what was best for them as they moved forward. It caused a lot of division amongst people, some felt better off and others wanted out. 1993 to 2020 is a long time to study, test and analyse what the UK should do. Wisely for them, they pulled out. Now things could finally go back to normal. No one else could run Britain the way the Brits had done throughout modern history. Some things, I guess, are still finding their way back to normalcy, but they will do that too, eventually. History repeats itself and UK has its authority back. No more EU for them!
this whole idea the UK is so poverty striken and begging for food banks is hilarious - the UK 'poverty' is still in a house eating 3 full meals a day not working and on benefits and sat watching tv in a warm room with creature comforts.

Just to be clearer. Britain has NEVER been part of the continent of Europe. It is a series of islands that are sovereign states that just happens to be near Europe. We were dragged into the European Union (a non elected body of overpaid faceless bureaucrats who are only interested in furthering their own ends) by a misguided government. Fortunately the population eventually saw though it and voted for us to leave the EU. Sadly the governments since that vote have ensured that we see no benefit from leaving the EU only the bad things. This is their way of punishing a population who had the temerity to challenge their overarching authority.
