In 1980 the guy on the right is wearing a traditional Sami outfit (Samis are natives of the Sapmi region which encompasses the northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Kola Peninsula in Russia).

Always fun to watch Americans react to Eurovision. Jahn Teigen was a national treasure with a great voice and songs that is close to every Norwegian’s heart. He sadly passed away a few years ago. Anita Skorgan and him were married. She is also a wonderful singer.

Song from 1980 was great🤩 his outfit was a traditional one from his people, the kind of sinding as well. He called a Sami, Norway's original people. It is the same with Keiino201?, coming in 6(7?)place🤩

There is a myth that Jahn Teigen, whom you didn't like in 78 was actually offered to be lead singer in Genesis but he turned it down which is why Phil Collins got the job.

Since the 90s Norway has definitely been one of the strongest countries.

im From Denmark .. my top 3 favourite Norwegian entries are 1985 Bobbysocks " la' det swinge" 2009 Alexander Ryback "Fairytale" and ,even if she didnt win ( which she should have) 2023 Alessandra " Queen of Kings"

Great reaction video. I liked and subscribed. Im Norwegian. Eurovision song contest is like a "guilty pleasure" for most of us Norwegians :) loved and hated at the same time. Most years we think most of the songs are like trash and that its more like a bad taste party or a freak competition :) But we always see it. Sadly it has become a bit political and the voting reflects that. Also when the eastern block countries was added we felt that it seemed like they supported each other a bit. That could be wrong. When I was a kid I always liked Jahn Teigen. As someone said he is like a national treasure. A super fun (almost comedian) like character with enormous energy and songs like "optimist" (that song did not win the Norwegian finale, because of a professional jury. But it won the peoples hearts and became a evergreen in Norway. It was also very special because the winner got the "buuu" from audience when he won :) But Ill say as most Norwegians. I wish the Eurovision Song Contest had been more a contest where all countries sendt their best artists to compete. Instead it is what it is. A contest with songs that you forget about the minute after you have heard it. Very few hits has come from that competition apart from Swedish Abba, German Ein Bishen frieden etc. (they are great). Sweden and UK are superpowers in music and I guess we Norwegians have always felt behind them.

Interesting fact Elisabeth Andreassen has been in Eurovision 4 times, Sweden in 82 as half of female duo Chips, 85 as half of Bobbysocks, 94 & 96 & she may just be my fave Eurovision singer ever, well along with Carola & Loreen,

Fun fact: Secret garden (which won with nocturne) in 1995 also wrote the original for you raise me up. Check it out, the original is so much better than West life and josh grobans versions! These snippets dont really show the proper songs though. Nocturne is probably the best eurovision piece ever, too good for the clown show that it usually is. Hauntingly beatiful. It has some gems here and there though. Loreen is another one.

That snippet of the 1995 is really the least representative of all the snippets there. That really did the melody dirty. What you heard was pretty much every sung word in the entire thing. Norway almost got disqualified because it wasn't "songy" enough for a "song contest". But in Norway it isn't a song contest, it's a melody/performance contest, and the rest of the melody is beautifully played on the violin.

I was hoping you would get around to comment on my country's entries as well :) The 1980 song is a joik, a traditional Saami type of song. and Mattis, the guy who didn't have the guitar, wore the traditional Saami outfit. Another pop culture example of a joik is the opening song in Frozen ;) The 2019 bald singer also sang in Saami. The Saami people is an indigenous people group living in the northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland and parts of Russia... Jahn Teigen and Anita Skorgan are two of the recurring names in the 80's. They participated a lot of times, with very varied results ;) When Jahn got 0 points, his song actually did really well after the fact, since it was so rare that a song got 0. I mean, we had a lot of last, or second to last places, but few nul points... The 1995 song is the one that in a previous video had just the violin part, which is the most notable part. The singing parts were just put there because they had to have words ;)

It's actually a very political song. It's was made during a very political area where discussions about damming up a river that would damage the reindeer herding

In 2004, "High" finished low.

My personal favorites are Nocturne, I feed you my love, A monster like me, grab the moment, Queen of kings and ofcourse Give that wolf a banana! Fairytale was great but I’m really tired of it.

Norway is Phenomenal at Eurovision. 1995, 2009, 2015, 2019 & 2023 especially. 🇬🇧🤝🇳🇴

The ones you don't like at the start are all the biggest names in Norwegian music at the time, kinda funny...

Some years have stronger entries overall and some weaker, that is why sometimes songs that are good finish lower or vice versa, weaker songs finish higher.
