I like the fact that both Jimmy Carr and Frankie Boyle both didn't simply rely on shocking humor alone. Jimmy presented the audience with the "it's a social experiment" approach, while Frankie made it a point to say, "if you're coming to my show, you damn well know what you're in for...and it certainly isn't socially-appropriate!"

It's true that Jimmy has often presented his comedy as a bit of an experiment, to see how far he can go with an audience. But I think that is itself a joke, he's not really trying to test people's limits, he's just trying to make them laugh. I've heard him describe how all jokes work. It's two stories, one is the story the audience thinks you are telling, the other is the story you are actually telling. The comedy comes from the moment that the audience realizes that story one is actually story two. I don't think that description applies to all jokes, but it definitely applies to Jimmy's jokes. The offensiveness is just how he personally flavours this type of joke. The first story is innocent, while the second story is disturbing and offensive, and that contrast adds to the humor.

We definitely need dark humour. I lost my mum to cancer years ago, we also lost a friend earlier this year to the same disease. If I didn't have a dark sense of humour I'd definitely have struggled a lot more to "cope".

Same here. Mum while in hospital never lost her wits. The doc would watch her take 45 minutes to walk down the hallway to go out for a smoke. The doc was like, you should give up it's not helping. Pause, she looks up expressionless, well tell you what doc, I'll make you a deal. If you can make the chemo better by making my hair fall out where I don't want hair, then I'll give up. RIP mum, spirited to the end, exactly how she brought us up.

100% agree. I lost my Dad when I was 11 (not in a parking lot, he died) people were so unsure on how to talk to me about it until found the humour in it. Even at 12, I was saying that the plus side was I didn't have to buy father's day gifts any more.

I’m a British ex-pat living in Canada and saw Jimmy Carr on tour here this summer. He sold out 2 shows and I assumed the audience would be mostly us Brits but it wasn’t. At the end of the performance he did a bit with texts sent to him from the audience. One of them was from someone whose dad had bought their tickets but died 2 weeks before the show. Jimmy dedicated the show to their dad. The guy is a class act in every sense.

JIMMY AND FRANKIE ARE GODS IN UK DARK COMEDY

As an epileptic if I found the amount of times someone made a seizure joke offensive then I’d have no time in my life. It’s so important we can laugh at ourselves and just move on from these jokes. Both of these comedians are awesome and make comedy better! Nice vid (can’t help but say cagefighter 😂😂😂😂 still laughing)

I had suicide awareness training at work and was told that women often try two or three times before succeeding and I stated “like parking eh”. Only 1 laugh out of 20 people 😩🤣

I really mean it when I say that I am an OLD man, and some people think that we have no sense of humour any more, and that we keep on harking back to "When we were young etc etc" but this lady has me rolling about with laughter. @@Chris_Seccull True, both with the comment about Jim and about Americans thinking Aussies and Brits are 1 and the same. I would argue a little in regards to Jim in that, whilst he was in the UK for a bit, his big break was really in America and I think he actually holds dual citizenship now. He never really did much beyond the typical UK comedy circuit from my recollection. Tim Minchin, however, has been a regular on British TV, had huge sell-out tours here and was actually born in Britain too I believe so, technically, you could argue he even is British, even though we all know he's really Australian.

Amanda, there is another comedian, known for his shock value that emerged in the 80s and that's Jerry Sadowitz. He's their predecessor and the granddaddy (and a brilliant magician). But you wont find any clips as theyre removed. But if you do, def. worth a watch. 😅

I'll add the late, great, Bill Hicks - he was greatly loved by British audiences, the "Revelations" show recorded in London is TOP notch - though he was an American comic. I was lucky enough to catch a show in Austin, Texas a little before he died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 32.

I think Ricky Gervais had it right, when he said "There is no such thing as an offensive joke... There are just jokes that some individuals might find offensive, but that's up to them."

That's a cop-out. It's basically "the coward's defense", ie. saying something provocative and then deciding whether you "meant" it after-the-fact based on how your audience responds. Little wonder that Gervais vanished like a fart in the breeze with such a lazy approach to his own work.

@@michaelccozens It can be a cop-out, but I think it can be a legitimate defense depending on the context. Jimmy Carr has a pretty easy time defending his jokes as "just jokes" because of the nature of his stand-up. Many comics will do observational stuff, making a serious point in a funny way. When Ricky Gervais does an entire routine mocking a bible story, he obviously thinks the story really is ridiculous. He's making a real point in a funny way. But Jimmy Carr just tells a bunch of individual jokes, nearly all of them offensive. At no point do you get the idea that he means any of them on any level. Then again, if it turns out that Jimmy really is a child molester and murderer with a tiny penis whose girlfriend is an Asian girl he bought of her father, I may have to re-evaluate.

Some of the English celeb references 100% went over your head 🤣 I love dark comedy my best mate in work when we where going for a ciggie break used to go to his car and we would say why and he would say to check Madeline McCann to see if he had fed her 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Old school Jim Jeffries was similar, before he became Jim Jefferies. I met him once when I was drunk and he was doing a gig in a really small town with a crowd of about 90 people, just before he was doing a Glasgow gig. Middle of December and I don't blame him for seeming pretty miserable. He did a damned good performance despite that. Anyway, during the intermission I went out for a fag and he asked if there was anywhere he could get a good curry. I told him a place and said I don't know how good the curry is, but it only just opened 2 weeks ago so you shouldn't get food poisoning. I thought it was quite witty at the time :P

We do thrive on dark humour… at a Regimental reunion a few years ago, I happened to bump into a bloke who’d lost both legs in Afghanistan. He was on prosthetic legs which were very ungainly and odd looking. I said to him, “Mate, I always remember you being taller”. There was a sharp intake of breath…a silence…..then he pissed himself laughing! We all got drunk and he wasn’t the only one totally legless that night!

Being offended at humour is not the fault of the comedian. Anyone can be offended at ANYTHING. A listener can CHOOSE to be offended or not. ‘OFFENCE’ is what a person brings upon themselves.

I worked in a school and at the end of term pupils were allowed to "buy" lessons so they didn't have to do school work. The proceeds going to charity. I got the record amount for one lesson when a bunch of senior students paid me to put on a Frankie Boyle video. A female assistant head teach came in to talk to me while it was on...

You still need to watch a bit of chubby brown if you want proper offensive material

Chubby Brown is terminally unfunny...otoh, Bernard Manning is a comedy legend...on a side note, I went to the Sandcastle water park in Blackpool with my bird n kids and while mucking around with my daughters, I noticed Roy "chubby" Brown was in there with a young boy......I think, nay hope, it was his grandson......

Please understand that there is a segment of the population that actively seeks to be offended and/or eagerly take offense on behalf of the party who may well not even be offended😂. They are a small yet exceptionally noisy group, consisting of many sub groups. They are typically members of the liberal or "progressive" populace and do not reflect the feelings of most Americans, no matter what the liberal mainstream media wants you to believe. Do ease up on those broad strokes with which you paint an entire society😊.

Frankie never wrote any of jimmy's stand up routines. He was the co-head writer for Jimmy's tv shows - Distraction, 8 out of 10 cats & cats does countdown, the dating type one with face in the title and even now occasionally writes for the gameshow thing jimmy hosts... but jimmy writes all his stand up himself.

The best thing about these reaction videos is the look on Amanda’s face. Funnier than the jokes.

Check out Paul Smith. Very x rated comedian from Liverpool. He basically has conversations with the audience and takes the piss out of them. Nothing is off the table with him and he’s super quick witted. He has his own channel. Would love to see your reaction to him.

It's a difficult call between Frankie Boyle and Jimmy Carr because they both do the same thing but in slightly different ways. Either way, I love the audacity of it, the way they smile while making people cringe. Not many could get away with that and still get an audience.

To be honest, I've been a Frankie Boyle fan for many years and have read some of his books. I think I'd have to choose Frankie for the fun and shock factor - and even some of his innocent jokes are so stupendously funny.

As a brit, some of my favourite brit comedians are, the amazing late Sean lock, Roy chubby brown (he's banned from a lot of venues) and micky Flanagan

As someone who writes "dark/offensive" jokes, I find that the darker the joke, the funnier it is. I am "that" guy that people have to be warned about at parties... because a joke will just come to my mind, and out of my mouth before I can stop it. But it's FUN to catch people off guard like that. Especially if you're quick witted enough to counter any time they try to shut you up by being offended.

@@melanp4698 Not really, to be honest about it. I don't crack jokes with the intention of hurting someone directly. I'll roast those I know, but I also know they can not only take it, but dish it right back. None of us get offended by that. If someone gets offended by something I said, that's on them. The WORST thing is when someone gets offended on someone else's behalf, that wasn't offended to begin with. That's the most degrading thing you can do to someone. Because you're basically saying that they aren't smart enough to be offended by something, so you'll be offended FOR them.

Darkest thing I ever heard was when I was explaining to a friend that the reason a speed camera was installed was because a minibus full of disabled kids had been hit by a lorry and they’d all been killed, he responded, “well every cloud…”

I suggest Gary Delaney Most ruthless jokes. It’s all the ones that got the most complaints.

Jimmy Carr (excepting the whole tax avoidance stuff) is apparently our hardest working comedian. From what I understand he almost never stops doing standup between the TV series he did/does. Some people never really got that Frankie Boyle was always pretty liberal, and maybe he's just got older and not wanted the hassle that comes with the kind of offensive material he used to do, but I honestly think a lot of it had to do with him being kicked off Mock The Week for saying the Queen's pussy was haunted (which was hilarious).

Correct if you see his list of tour dates on his website its amazing. He does 2 or 3 shows a day in the US sometimes where he goes for a few weeks end Nov- early Dec he does 1500 seat venues and up overthere and then he comes back to the UK doing 500 seats in a small town somewhere he is relentless

If u haven’t already heard of this bloke, I would highly recommend checking out Gary Delaney! He’s the master of delivering one liners, continuously…some of which could be rather offensive to those soft boiled eggs living amongst us 🙄🤷‍♂️😜

Ricky Gervais got it spot on when he said " You can make fun of everything or you cant make fun of anything."

I find some of Frankie's so far theyre almost mean 😂 but some are still funny Yeah Jimmy Carr is the best at offensive jokes I always find them funny even if theyre too far it prob helps that Jimmy is a really nice guy so it comes off as less evil lol

You said a lot of people will disagree with you about the shock value ... I disagree with that. Those guys would not be as popular as they are if people did not like that kind of humour. People who say they are offended are just trying to make it look like they are sensitive and caring to others needs. Might have said this before, but years ago I booked to see Jimmy Carr and a female friend of mine said she would never see him again as he makes pedo jokes, and that just is not funny. My answer to her was "Well why have you booked to see Frankie Boyle then?" As I say, most of the offended people are hypocrites because they do enjoy it, but they think it makes them seem like better people if they say they don't.

Think Frankie takes it for me but Bottom will always be top spot for comedy…Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson was a top double act

When I saw the title I immediately thought of Jimmy Carr and Frankie Boyle, with probably a bit of Jim Jeffries in there as well. I was also surprised to see Tim Minchin, I'd forgotten how savage he can be when he wants to be. She's not British (she's Canadian), but years ago Margaret Cho used to be pretty confronting with her routines, she might be worth looking at if you want to go down that road.

Frankie used to write for Jimmy, and you can see his influence on Jimmy's career. I wouldn't say dark comedy is an exclusively British thing but I do think we appreciate it more. Don't get me wrong the US has it's fair share of dark comedians like Jim Norton, David Cross, Daniel Tosh, Anthony Jeselnik and that's without even delving into the GOATs. Personally I think it's a coping mechanism against the truly horrible things that happen on a daily basis, and without getting too deep it's a reminder that life is fleeting so enjoy it while you can. Hope you and the family are well, and I can't believe you only recently watch the Harry Enfield Chemist, I could swear you'd done it before. Brilliant sketch, also a pretty spot on South African accent.

I live in Spain with my German wife, have a Danish friend and used to work with a French team in Brussels. UK humour is a defence mechnisim. We look for the most crass joke for the most horrible event. We then start to talk about it. Others countries just keep silent. We cope better.

Not so sure it's that contrived. If you lived in Glasgow you'd hear it all the time and about anything and certainly not just as a defence mechanism for horrible events.

After 9/11 it took 7 minutes for someone to text me a joke about it. After 7/7 I got a joke text in under 90 seconds, so we are moderately respectful of other countries “tragedies”

I prefer Jimmy over Frankie, because Jimmy doesn't target individuals just whole groups. Frankie generally goes for certain famous people [usually talentless front page tabloid fillers] who are currently in the limelight therefore his jokes generate more current shock value but often its like he's just shooting fish in a barrel.

Frankie did write forJimmy, but I think that was a long time ago. I love your snort/laugh. :)

Frankie Boyle used to be an absolute savage and said he didn't care if he got cancelled... then all sudden turned woke and isnt funny anymore as to Jimmy Carr who even got done for tax avoidance is still a comedic treasure in Britain, the episode of 8 out of 10 cats when Jimmy was the butt of all jokes he faced the music and took it like a man which many would run and hideaway

Frankie Boyle went from not caring who he offended, to being someone who was offended by everything.

There are a lot more offensive than this. Bernard Manning and Roy Chubby Brown for starters. And Jim Jefferies has got a lot more than this.

These jokes taken in context of the venue but they are told they are jokes however some of them said outside of a comedy venue could be classes hate speech.

Oh, and can anyone explain the Joker reference in Boyle's response to the "Things you won't hear in a superhero movie" segment? I got the Superman one of course, but I don't quite get the where Joker one came from.

This kind of comedy is an art form, and most just can't pull it off. Many think they can, but the really can't.

Amanda- if you like brutal/offensive British comics, try going back in time to the 70s to the 90s and check out what you can of a comic named Bernard Manning. He is the one who really started it all, northern working men’s club humour. Best wishes from Cornwall, UK!

I can't explain how proud I am that most of these are Brits.

Check out another Brit, Gary Delaney. The skill in the construction of the jokes is epic. You're laughing before you realise you shouldn't be. That's genius.

Have you ever watched Newman & Baddiel (Rob Newman and David Baddiel)? They were big as a British comedy duo in the 90's but I think their shows are only available on KZread now, never seem to appear in the compilation clips for some reason though? I'd recommend their 'Live and in Pieces' tour :)

nice one Amanda, was wondering where you were :-) Try looking up "Jethro - comedian" (Mr Geoffrey Rowe from Cornwall). Once you get into his storytelling I think you might like his style: it's a bit like Billy Connelly - sorry, that's Sir William Connelly now. But they all fade away when you listen to someone who must be one of the LEAST offensive comedians ever, (also a Sir) Ken Dodd, very much double-entrendre but I could still watch him for hours ... which is good 'cos his shows go on forever 🙂

😂😂😂 Really loved this - just subscribed to the channel. Haven’t seen it before. I’m assuming Amanda either lives in the U.K. or follows events here. Many of these jokes would probably be lost on most Americans. How many Americans actually know who Richard Hammond, Katie Price, etc are? Not many, I wouldn’t have thought.

The Cage Fighter Harvey Price joke will always be a masterpiece lol.

There are many comedians who some may take offence to. Jimmy and Frankie being two. They're great when they want to be and tell the gags well. Another you may want to check out is Gary Delaney who has a fair bit of his, not for TV, stuff on channel here at KZread.

You should check out Sean Lock if you havent allready. Perhaps not as shocking as Frankie and Jimmy, but he once said he imagined that a man with sex change would look like a squirell shot with a Magnum. A bloody hole surrounded by fur. Or that time he said he just ignore the voices in his head, and keep on with the killing.

I don't think there is any malice in comedy, and once you understand that you can laugh at pretty much anything. I kinda feel bad for those that can't see the humour in these jokes.

Kevin Bridges. If you want dark, brutally honest, down to earth humour you can’t get much more so than Scottish comedians. I’ve always loved Frank’s humour he’s always been unashamedly funny. If you like Frankie & Jimmy then definitely check out Kevin too. x

I went to see Jimmy at the beginning of COVID. He started by mentioning it and asked if there were any old people in. When they cheered, he started waving while saying, "Bye, bye." The whole show was amazing, and they're well over 2 hours, not the one hour you see on the recorded shows. I was crying almost all the way through. I think both Frankie and Jimmy have written jokes for other comedians.

What helps my like Jimmy Carr’s dark and offensive humor is in the way he delivers. It’s clear that he’s telling jokes and that these things don’t/aren’t happening. He knows they’re offensive. There are other comedians that say offensive things, but it seems they actually believe that way. It’s those I don’t find funny.

Carr has so many awesome shows. Absolutely love it. Another fave of mine is Jim Jeffries, who also got featured here in a few shorts.

The guy with the long dreads and the eye make-up is Tim Minchin and should not have been in this because he is actually Australian. I fact he started out as a busker playing a keyboard and incorporating comedy before he went to stand-up. Also for Jimmy at the start of his gigs he does a few tester jokes to see what the limit of the audience is so he can gauge how far he can push it during the show. And like all stand-up comedians if you go to a show you know what sort of things to expect going in so it isn't as shocking when you are there

I suppose it depends on your prediction. It doesn't shock many, coz it's kinda predictable and devoid of anything clever. Frankie got like that. Quite jaded. And jaded and offensive don't make a good match. I think he is far funnier than Jimmy when funny but he so often gets it wrong. jimmy makes it feel like a mirror on ourselves; quite an achievement.

Top 5 British comedians- Connolly, Boyle, Gervais, Frank Skinner and Steve Coogan. IMO

Hi girl, between the ones you got in the post I chose Jimmy. You have many more out there as good and disruptive as them, my kind of humor. Humor must be challenging, insolent and disruptive to be humor, is the way to deal with painful subjects and truth, that's why any kind of authoritarianism always try to cancel or censor it.

Richard hammond top gear presenter nearly died/was in coma after a crash. Madeleine mccaan was abducted on holidays when parents went out to dinner. Kerry Katona was a coke head mother who went bankrupt. Jade goody was a loudmouth reality tv star who died 2 weeks after getting married. Some of the jokes worked better when said immediately after the events occurred.

That last joke from Frankie got him in so much trouble but it was so worth it 🤣
