I had the pleasure of seeing Ken Dodd and what a fantastic night it was. The only problem was though his show only ended when most of the audience had gone for the last bus. I know that I sat for at least 6 hours before walking home.

The length of his shows were legendary. I like the story of the theatre manager who one night threw a bunch of keys out on the stage and asked Doddy to put the lights out and lock up when he had finished!

@@jamesthompson3674 I was in a cabaret band in Liverpool in the 1970s and 1980s. We were on with Ken Dodd one time. We did our set, and was told to leave our backline on the stage. Ken Dodd went on and around 1:30 in the morning the Concert Sec was going bananas trying to get him to finish! It's true about the length of his shows, but he was hilarious from start to finish. A true professional!

Ken comes from a kind of innocent era, when so many celebs were anything but! And yes, he’s a real genius and always acts like he has no brain which is brilliant too.

Class is permanent, and he was a giant!

Ken Dodd, was infact very good singer, he also acted, but is best remembered for his stage act, he was one of the old style ( music hall) comedians, no foul language, but plenty of innuendo, a true British legend of comedy 🇬🇧👍

Ken Dodd was often booked for a two hour show, and more often than not, he was there four hours later

See if you can find some stuff from Michael Bentine, another comic genius. His model enactments were amazing.

I like how he wanted to spread happiness. He was famous for putting a show on for longer than billed, so if he was advertised between 11 - 2, he'd be onstage until 5 pm sometimes. My mam and dad have a record of his from his younger days. He is a good singer.

I saw him live, and he caught a a man check his watch. He smiled and said you've probably missed your bus.

That whole show “An Audience With Ken Dodd” is hilarious. That Dicky Mint routine was probably the funniest segment on the show. It was great fun the Saturday night it was first shown in our house watching with the family.

I used to stay at my grandparents for long periods of time growing up, my Grandad loved Ken Dodd and introduced me to his humour. Always remember watching Doddy and the Diddy men. Feels like memories from such a special distant time ❤

The legend that was and still is Ken Dodd ! When you went to see Doddy, you certainly got your money's worth. I saw him a couple of times in the City Varieties Theatre in Leeds in the Nth of England and I was sat on a foot wide wooden ledge ( we couldn't get seats ) - for 3.1/2. hours and by the end my derierre was numb !! He is notorious for going over his time by a LOT !!

I was lucky enough to go and see Doddy not long before he died and his singing voice was just as strong (and he was second only to the Beatles in singles sold during the 1960s with Tears for Souvenirs being such a massive hit). He was an old fashioned variety performer.

How long did you go over? We had to get up and leave after two hours over his finishing time because we had a babysitter! When he first came on stage he had with him a lunch box and flask, when we all laughed he innocently asked haven’t you brought one!😂

Tears was the best selling single of 1965 in the UK, ahead of the Beatles.

Was lucky enough to see Doddy live a few times. EB mentioned his singing voice: Ken Dodd actually had a few hits BITD (slightly before my time) with songs including, ‘Tears’, ‘Love is like a violin’ and others.

I think my favourite Ken Dodd joke came after he was prosecuted for tax evasion. "It wasn't my fault. I went to the doctor and he told me not to overtax myself." A funny man for all seasons.

I love this man me & mum went & saw him about 8-10 times all over the uk it cost £18 to see him & he did 7pm-11.30 most nights one night in Blackpool me & mum saw him & he was still on the stage @ 0035am I swear this is the truth the manager came down the isle had a set of keys in his hand threw the keys on the stage & said Ken lock up when your finished I swear funny clean & a very very warm generous man as was his wife who was part of the act sometimes named lady Anne RIP sir Ken Ps please can you download & show everyone your reaction to an audience with Ken Dodd that would be amazing for everyone including you & your viewers thank you Alan

Ken Dodd is the best stand -up I've ever seen. He was also a bona fide pop singer, with one of the top songs of the 1960s in England 'Tears'. (btw for me the best stand-up comedian still with us is Bill Bailey). For more old school comedic talent try the brilliant Victor Borge.

Ked Dodd lived in a big house close to my village (small market town) in England and even in his 70s and 80s was renown for performing locally and carrying on until the early hours of the morning! A great entertainer who loved being on stage………😊

I lived up the road from Doddy it wasn't a big house it was the same house his mum and dad lived in Its in Knotty Ash liverpool never heard it called a village before😅😅

In later life he lived a few miles away from the small market town of Whitchurch on the border between Shropshire & Cheshire! I know this because I lived there……. It’s about 30 miles or so south of Liverpool…….😁

One of the best ventriloquist acts I've seen was Arthur Worsley... He'd barely speak at all as himself, and the entire act was basically the dummy slagging him off and screaming insults into his face. 😂 But all without moving his lips or even really changing his expression.

Sir Ken was to me, the last of the old style Entertainers. He was a Legend here in Liverpool and an outright Gentleman. Did you see the other British Legend, Warren Mitchel at 4.06 in the Audience. People like these are sadly no more. Ken will always be one of Britain`s best 👍👍 RIP 🖤

He was so funny - his shows would go on for hours! No-one believed Knotty Ash existed ,where he comes from, but it does - I live there! Yes Alan look up some more of his stuff, hilarious - stay well 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

I am a fellow Liverpudlian and was able to see Ken a few times. Such a genius and he always played well over the time he was supposed to finish. As you mentioned he had an amazing voice. RIP Ken Dodd

His single "Tears" (aka Tears for Souvenirs) spent 24 weeks in the charts, 5 of those weeks at No.1. Third biggest selling single of the 60's and the only one of the top 5 that wasn't The Beatles. He was asked by Dame Hilda Bracket, during his first "An Audience With....", if his voice had been trained. He responded by saying "Yes, they put down newspaper."

Doddy was a great singer but I much prefer his other hit, "Happiness", which became something of a theme tune for him, and is always guaranteed to bring a smile to the face.

Doddy is/was a genius comic. Tthe story goes, if you went to a Ken Dodd gig, take a picnic, a flask of tea, and he would still be entertaining you after 5 hours or so! He gave value for money to the people.

I remember when one of Manchester’s few theatres was threatened with closure he put on an epic variety show which lasted hours without taking a penny himself. My sides ached from laughing heavily for hours on end!

Ken had a beautiful singing voice he was the top selling artist of 1965 topping The Beatles, he was actually a comedian that people would demand a song from. God Bless him.

You were saying how great some comedians are with their voices, and singing voice in particular, and You are right. There is nobody as good though as the late Freddie Starr, an all round entertainer and funny man, but his singing voice was just "WOW", especially his Elvis covers!

Ken Dodd was amazing! If you went to one of his shows you wouldn’t be leaving until 2am, he used to go on for hours, he loved it so much. Please watch the video “Ken Dodd Medley”, it goes on for about 6 minutes and showcases his singing voice

Had the pleasure of seeing him with my late Mother he was so very funny and he had a reputation of going past his time he did, we loved him for it.

Daddy was simply the BEST comedian the UK ever produced he would often do six hours, virtually non stop. Many years ago, in Britain the top radio programme was Ken Brough and Archie Andrews. A Ventriloquist and his dummy, I kid you not. It would be an ideal subject for you. Keep them coming your short shows really cheer this pensioner immensely.

Honestly, Ken Dodd preformed and entertainted for 7 decades and brought smiles and tears off laughter every time. As been said by others, we all knew that his shows would over run up to 2 hours after it was supposed to finish but it never felt like it. So glad you have discovered him and loving him like we all do.

Ken was a mega talent. I was fortunate to see him live several times in Blackpool, my ribs always ached for days afterwards with the laughter. In an era before one man shows he dominated the stage on his own for an hour. A terrific singer as well with melody and clear diction. Marvellous. Thank you Doddy. I will always remember "is there a farmer in the house ?" . " No" responded the audience. "It must be you then" as he nodded to the orchestra pit on their way out for a one hour break. To a schoolboy that was outstanding.

I was working at Butlins Pwllheli (first job after school) when the huge Gaiety Complex burnt down very late one night. Massive fire, all the chalets nearby evacuated into a 'spare' hall in their jim-jams. Fire Chief asking staff for door-to-door checks, as cinders rained down (burnt my head and ruined my new Wrangler jacket..). Ken Dodd had been on in the evening, and got out of bed, came over to the hall and gave an impromptu show for an hour to keep everyone happy.

The man in the audience that the camera cuts to is Warren Mitchel an actor famous for playing a character called Alf Garnet in a sitcom called 'Till death us do part' about class differences in east-end London, you might like, if it's still available.

He was a proper No 1 artist in the charts in the 60’s EB , multi talented guy . He got done for tax evasion back in the 90’s I think , he incorporated his experiences in his live shows and it was a scream 😅 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

The amazing thing about his tax case is that he was acquitted, his solicitor quoting 'fear of brown envelopes' as one reason he had not responded to Inland Revenue letters! (If anyone had been following Alex Belfield on YT, he was a great fan and friend of Ken Dodd and interviewed him a few times, and named his little fluffy dog, 'Doddy' after Ken.)

ken was an amazing singer - especially in the 1960s when he had 18 top 40 hits including "Tears" from 1965 which was the 3rd best selling hit for the entire decade - bearing in mind that the likes of The Beatles and Gerry & the Pacemakers were so prolific (all from Liverpool too). In Liverpool we have a day each year called Doddy Day which celebrates his life and talent and there is currently a museum exhibition which showcases a couple of his comedy notebooks / manuals. Hello Alan. My mum and dad debated going to a show at the seaside to see Ken, spotting his billboard outside the theatre, but he had the reputation of never ending shows, as per other comments. They had me as a kid with them, so we did not get to go see him live. Lots of love in the comments. I expected lots of "Do you know Ken Dodd's dad's dog's dead". Since others mention puppets, have you ever seen "Spit the Dog"? Voice throwing? Watch out for the Spit! Kids loved it, including big ones. Others might say it was not a Patch on this though?

I never managed to see him live, but when myu folks went ,at the time the show normally ends, he sent out hampers of snacks and sandwiches tro the theatre,and then carried on for another few hours,amazing professional entertainer.

You have to be one of my favourite reactors.... One of the reasons is your infectious laughter. The second reason is that you are so nice about what you see.

Fair to say that like many of the comedians/double acts that have appeared in the reactions it's the years of hard work learning the craft that make the difference. I'm old enough to have grown up watching The Two Ronnies, Morecombe and Wise, Ken Dodd and others besides, I laughed as a youngster but it's only now I really appreciate just how good they really were. Nina Conti is from a different generation and has a different take on ventriloquism with the 'human puppet' part of her act, that's a really clever act as she reads the personality of the people she gets on stage and weaves it into the act, no two are the same and it's as much down to the participants as her skill, it's a bit risky as she has to improvise all the way through but when the right people are on stage it's great to watch. As people have said, he had a great singing voice esp for lyrical or romantic songs. He used to joke that with his face he couldn't have a career as a romantic singer

A friend of mine thought the jam butty mines where the diddy men worked in Knotty Ash was not a real place until years later he visited Liverpool and there was a road sign for Knotty Ash.

Such a talent, the like that will never be seen again.

This clip comes from Ken Dodd's showcase-type video volume 1 ("An Audience With Ken Dodd") in front of a live audience of fellow celebs in the mid-1990s. Watching that video is the best way to see and appreciate his humour and talent and hilarious effect on his audiences. He did a later one called "Another Audience With Ken Dodd" which was almost as good. If you could do some exerts from it or review it in stages that would be truly great. There might be copyright issues though.

Loved Ken Dodd, saw him at a Panto, i was about 4 or 5, late 60s, Manchester. Alsi had Vince Hill in it and a TV comedy duo, Hope and Keen. Brilliant. He had a programme on BBC1, Saturday night and my nan would tell me to wave at him and the Doddy Men, I thought he could see me.

From music hall to top of the pops, can't think of anyone comparable to him.

Ken was a natural, and a true gentleman. My parents saw him walking down the promenade in Blackpool, as resort in the north west of England, many years ago. He stopped to talk with everyone he met, I still have a photo of him that they took that day. Nina Conti is an exceptional ventriloquist, who uses audience members in her act, as well as her own puppets.

Just sit back in admiration of an absolute master of his craft. Yes they're old jokes, yes they're cliched, but Ken Dodd is of an era when comics and entertainers had to do everything, dance, sing, tell jokes etc. and skills were honed with hour after hour of practice, and endless travelling, living out of hotel rooms and performances night after night in terrible venues in front of hostile crowds for very little money. What I'm saying is, to make it in those times was a monumental battle. You had to be extremely good and to work extremely hard. Ken Dodd has been at it for decades, and has forgotten more about show business than most performers will ever know. He is a breed apart. A legend, in the truest sense of the word. RIP.

Went to see him while on holiday in scarborough North Yorkshire, it was a two hr show it finished five hrs later he was brilliant.

He knocked the Beatle off the top off the charts with Tears. You should look at his show, An audience with Ken Dodd.

When the camera showed the audience...was that Alf Garnett? Now that character I wouldn't expect our American friend to have heard of.

People who went to see him live discovered that did't wanted to leave the stage. Plus he never ran out of material. On one occasion the theatre management and ushers just gave up waiting and sat down in the isles with the audience. He was on for hours but everyone loved it and stayed. He was an amazing bloke.

I love that this guy looks like a folk singer or someone that does wood craft but he's always in the most futuristic environments.

The greatest Uk ventriloquist was Ray Alan with "Lord Charles". You might want to check them out. Particularly the 'World's Greatest Ventriloquist - 1986' one where the puppet has its own puppet.

If you liked this I'm sure you'd love Ray Alan - who was massive in the 70s and 80s in the UK. Check the video titled "Ray Alan with "Lord Charles" - World's Greatest Ventriloquist - 1986" where Ray's dummy (Lord Charles - who is usually somewhat drunk) declares he is going to do a ventiloquist act. It's possibly the best vent sketch ever done.

I love that I can enjoy Ken Dodd now because as a kid in the 80's he terrified me. The mad hair and crazed expressions made me leave the room every time he appeared on the tele.

My father saw him years ago in Manchester. He said people were literally in tears laughing in the aisles. Funniest thing he’s ever been too.

You weren't watching Doddy in case his mouth moved (wouldn't have mattered if it had) you were watching Diddy Man. A true master of his craft. The man was an amazing comedian who fell out of favour for a while but was much loved by everyone in his later years.

The last time I saw Doddy live was in 2012 in Guildford Surrey, I just knew it would be my 5th and final time 😢 we went in at 7.30pm and finally got out with aching sides just before 1am. His funeral was a sight to behold, he was muched loved and greatly missed.

I was another one who was lucky to see him, he came out for the second half with a flask and sandwich box looked at the audience, and asked, " What, have you not brought yours?" a reference to how long his shows lasted. I think he was about 84 when I saw him and his show last approximately 5 hours.
