More of planes and aviation in general would be cool. The airbus a380 would get blown more by the wind because its huge vertical stabilizer but the mass of the plane and also the skills of the pilot help the aircraft land without huge problems. The purple small turboprop was FlyBe De Havilland Dash 8-400 also known as Bombardier Q400

I guess I should ask my dad he got some footage of the very first landing of an A380 at Düsseldorf airport.
I once experienced an extremely difficult landing approach in Hamburg. During a thunderstorm, we flew so low over the city that you could see people in their apartments having dinner. That was the only time I applauded the pilot after a landing.
second try of Düsseldorf was pretty good.
Crosswind landing is crazy, but there's something more frightening : Ryanair landing compilations :D
The way you pronounced Düsseldorf at the end of the video (at 9:29) was excellent, no need to apologize for that. The airport was opened in 1927 and is the fourth largest one in Germany in terms of passenger count (the airports of Frankfurt, Munich and Berlin are bigger). For a wider selection of International destinations, you might prefer to depart from Frankfurt, which is just 2:17 hours away by train.

4:45 You are right, it's an A380. It's not getting pushed around that much b.c. the wind was blowing less hard in this few seconds for sure. The pilot can be godtier and will still just be able to react and not able to prevend the planes movement and the weight is helping but you have to think about the fact that the stabelizer (tailfin) is also much bigger on the big planes and that's where the wind pushes the plane :D
Not sure... But I believe the purple plane to be a De Havilland Dash 8. It is a common plane in Europe for short distances. I believe that storm was called Xavier. We do get some crazy storms in central Europe in fall. Everybody in Switzerland and south of Germany still remembers Lothar. 30 years after.

For such situations on an aircraft Germany servs the matching music: Rammstein and the song 'Dalai Lama' 😅
the purple one seems to be a De Havilland DHC-8 called Dash 8.
A very strong crosswind and a light propeller aircraft is the cheapest way to do a Vtol landing 😂
Used to work for Airbus on the A-400M, good times. Those Pilots are top notch.
Its fun sitting in the jump seat right behind the pilot with these type of landings , as i have a few times , when i used to work for an airline

Madeira Island is the bitchest airport because of cross-winds. The pilots must have a certification to be allowed to land there. The sideways maneuver is called crabbing, and it's meant to point the nose to the wind right till the wheels touch the ground.
I was on an Ansett flight decades ago that got hit by a cross wind the one second was above the runway the about 30 metres to the right as I could see entire runway out the window, then it got hit and pushed the other way . Finally after a couple of failed attempts it managed to land but at an angle. And in Tasmania Australia we had two jets on the runway at the same time, my Qantas 737 was half way down runway and the virgin plane had touched do , could see it in the windows of the airport. As we pulled up to disembark the virgin jet was almost parked along side. Not supposed to land two jets on the single runway and have both on runway at same time
The purple aircraft was a Bombardier DHC8-Q400 operated by now bankrupt FlyBe

Fun fact about Dusseldorf, it's a trade show city. When there is a trade show in town, and you hop into a taxi at the airport, the driver won't even ask you where you're going, just take you straight to the Exhibition centre.
I once landed at Phuket airport in a thunderstorm. We had to circle around about 6 times because there was planes before us trying to land. When we did land you couldn´t see anything although it was in the middle of the day. Those pilots were skilled.
Düsseldorf is the 4 largest airport at germany right behind Frankfurt (the biggest in the EU), Berlin and München (by passengers per year)
1:20 second option!!
The purple one is a Bombardier Q400 I think. The first plane I was on was that model. While at the airport and waiting for my ride, I watched the massive Airbuses and Boeings land and take off and I was like "this flying is no big deal, looks safe and all". Then we were brought to our tiny bug with old school propellers and I crapped my pants. Also, the paint was quite bad and flaking at places. The airline does not exist any more, was called Malev.
The purple plane and the 2nd plane in the video are called a bombardier Q400
No doubting the supreme skill under extreme pressure. Great pick up I-dub! Love your work, you always find the coolest stuff
6:45 thats a DeHavilland Canadair (known as bombardier today) Dash-8-400. A very popular turboprop regional airliner
Flying was always my first dream but i always loved cars too. I race karts a lot these days and i noticed there is a lot of crossover with racing guys doing flying sims during winter and flying guys doing racing. :D
I was in one of the medium-sized planes returning from Berlin to Düsseldorf that day (Storm David / Cyclone Friederike, Jan. 2018). It was quite a wild ride and a rough landing. Anyway - I believe the hills in the background are the Niederbergisches Land (the name indicates a low-hill area). This area is also called "Neanderland" because of the Neandertal that is in the same district (Mettmann).
It's only a short video (around 2 mins) but "Float Plane Takes Off From Concrete Runway" is an interesting watch.
check the landings in Madeira Island. Just visual approaches

I find it so fun that you’re so excited about it all. Like a little kid, but I mean that in the nicest way possible. It’s like I hear my little nephew talk about things he is reading about. Honestly, I mean this as a compliment.
There are flights from Dusseldorf to Australia. Just like from Amsterdam Schiphol. But with a stopover in Dubai. To refuel and then fly to Australia. I expierienced such landings 2 times in my life. First was at Sardinia when the whole tower came down due the storm but the second one was scarier. It was in Ireland and I saw the runway through my window like normally only pilots do. It was so scary but believe me even if it looks like a mess, the pilots know what to do.
@deathextreme9

In Ireland the same thing happened to me. The first time I'd ever been on a plane. Landing at Shannon airport and before starting final descent it was blue sky above thick white cloud. As we entered the cloud layer rain began hitting the window and as we came beneath the clouds it was almost as dark as night (street lighting was on) and it was heaviest rain I'd ever seen in my 12 years. As the runway came up below it was at a 45 degree angle to the plane until almost touchdown when it finally and violently snapped straight. As I was sat only just behind the wing watching the reverse thrust blowing a torrent of water in the air was awesome.
Please have a look on some in-cockpit action of Blue Angels
The second plane is a Bombardier Dash 8 Q400, it’s not so small, it weight about 30 metric Tons, each of it’s turbines develops 4300+HP, and the props are 4,1meters diameter (13,5ft).
Interesting... for people not living in the mountains, it really kind of looks like there's mountains there. It's just hilly, though.

Check the landings at Madeira island Airport with crosswind
02:27 That is ATR 72 and flight at Tallinn to Helsinki and Stockholm 72 passanger trip speed 305 knots ( 552 km/h ) .
The ETIHAD. A330 (5.56) Twin engined airliner was a great landing, the main reason is fighting the wind but also what pilots call this aircraft. "a glider with engines" which means your whole approach has to be different.
As someone from Düsseldorf, the best crosswind landings happen in Ushuaia Argentinia.
Hello, the big 4 reactor plane is indeed an Airbus A380. The "funny" plane maight be a Bombardier Dash 8 I think. Not sure though...
Pilots actually do love crosswind landings.
Big planes need AIR FLOWING ACROSS THE WINGS just as much as small ones, so they need to "crab" too ... but they arent being shoved around by fluctuating winds as much. Physics applies regardless of size.
The turboprop planes all were DeHavilland Dash 8. Sadly basically the only turboprops left in Europe with rare exceptions of ATR72 and nowadays very rar Grumman Metro and Fokker F50. And you'd be amazed! From that very storm, I saw an on-board video of a crew landing their plane. They were smiles all over! Finally some fun on the job, an interesting ride, not just the bog-standard dreadfully boring fully automatized ILS-Approach on autopilot, actual flying! 🤗 …while the passengers in the rear ruminated on the in-flight meal. I wonder if they noticed a change in taste. With the sideslip angle it doesn't matter what size the plane is, by the way. This is just a matter of the plane's speed and the speed of the crosswind. As all airliners touch down around 100 to 110 kts, they all have similar sideslip angles, be it a 737 or an A-380 (As you rightly spotted). The Dash 8 touches down at much slower speed, thus the greater angle with these planes. With the gust sensitivity size isn't really that much of a factor, actually. The area load, the weight each square foot or square meter carries is the key. A plane of little area load will feel gusts and turbulence more than a one of high area load. That was the main reason why the MRCA Tornado got its variable sweep wing: For high speed low level flight, the wings get swept back all the way. This hides a good chunk of the wing in the fuselage and makes the plane swoosh through ground turbulence with only minor bumps. As the plane was intended to zoom through under radar detection, a low disturbance and fast ride in this turbulent air is key to be able to do the plane's work. As far as I know, there still is no other fighter that can maintain the Tornado's speed at its bee's knees altitude.

The purple one is a Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 a two turbopropulsor from Flybe. It made in Canada and fly from Britain and western Europe. you are good with the giant emirates Airbus A380-800 ( a full double decker).
Things pilots need to look out for is windshear, which is the sudden fast change of wind speed and direction, and can jerk the aircraft around a lot more violently and in the past caused many crashes. Not to scare anyone
Youre a nice guy man :) So many american react channels do these things where they react to clips that paint the USA in an unfavorable light in comparison to Europe. Clips like "why the USA sucks in this thing but why Europe is so much better" - you know the kind. And as a European I dont really like watching that. Because I dont like seeing people put themselves or their homecountry down. And also I dont have that psychological need to "feel better". Its not fun. But you react to things that interest you and its much more nice to look at :) It makes me share in your enjoyment, and It also makes me respect you more :)
You should check video of crosswind landings in Birmingham or Madeira

Hello 😊 thank you for that, any specific video that you have in mind?
Finally.....I do takeoff and landing analyses for a living.....in the words of mine retired pilot Dad, "no aircraft has remained in the air, ever" P.s. the bigger the plane, the easier it is, they just fly easier, corrections are easier, always touch down on one main gear, and be very attentive with the rudder.......history shows us that some almost killed the PAX
Glad you like planes; in Australia we have a great stream by Sydsquad you may like.
Nice! 🙂 Actually, a big plane is not necessarily an advantage in crosswinds, just imagine the huge side area the wind is hitting, this creates massive forces.
@IWrocker

Great point You make, Thanks 👍
@stanislavczebinski994
Жыл бұрын
The forces are indeed massive - but big planes handle crosswind a lot better than small planes. A light plane like Cessna 172 is certified for 15 kts crosswind - a big A380 took 40 kts crosswinds and 54 kts (104 kph) gusts during certification.
Düsseldorf is a interesting City.About 640.000 citizens live in the city.Metro Area has about 3 Millions citizens.
8:33 if you’re taking aircraft suggestions, then you have got to check out the landings at Kai Tak airport in Hong Kong. It’s been closed for 25 years now, but to land there you needed balls of steel. Its unbelievable
Captain. We will be landing in 5 minutes! Wait 6, 4, 6, 4 um at some point we will land we have glider issues 😂
1:20 Here the pronunciation is quite correct.
The technique is called crabbing. All pilots are trained using this maneuver when landing in crosswinds.
In cases like these i dont envy their job xD, that has to be a fearsome experience...
Landing with cross-wind? Only one thing pops up in my mind: Kai Tak International in Hong Kong.
You should look at Frankfurt, Paris or Amsterdam. Those are the bigger airports in Europe with a lot of international flights (i mean outside of Europe).
Your second and last attempt on saying Düsseldorf way better than most Americans. Everybody in Germany will understand you without any problem. An airplane may be big and heavy, but wind is extemely powerful. Just imagine how much power is needed to lift roof tiles into the air. And still they get blown away by storms. A mid sized passenger jet has a wingloading of about 600kg per square meter. Shaking it like crazy does require a lot less energy than lifting roof tiles. Modern twin jets look all the same. It really isn't as easy as it used to be. Let me try how far I get without cheating. 1st: A320 with winglet kit 2nd: DHC/Bombardier Q300 or Q400 (737 taxying in the background) 3rd: A380 4th: should be an A330 5th: A320 6th: Q300 or Q400
I just get hammered before I go into a plane because I am scared but usually I have to go to the bathroom even before it is allowed... that is a pain :). But then, a couple of drinks in the plane makes me sleep hehe. Yea I am not a big fan... but don't drink to much tho because you can be denied the flight by the captain.
I remember having seen yesterday something I wasn‘t aware it ever existed since decades. The B52 flying fortress (made in the 60s and still in service) has landing gear that can swivel so the plane is taking off and landing staying in a crab angle the whole time while the wheels are parallel to the runway axis. That looks so sick! It is on pos 6:47 of this clip: kzread.info/dash/bejne/d5eTy62tcczdh84.html&feature=share

In the the A 380 (Airbus), you only have the best of the best pilots. But sadly they have stopped making them because of the environment (using to much fuel etc even if it was lightweight for its size) and the cost of maintenance and other things like the price of the thing itself. Being in one 3 times (not first clas hehe), I can say it is a superb machine but I don't like flying to be honest and those are the longest flights. You have cams on the plane so that you can watch on your everything going out outside.... well the back of the plane at least (didn't really watched all of it, it makes me sick)
