I disagree! Not "best"! I think it would have been better if coach hadn't started spouting at least as much nonsense and as many falsehoods as the interviewer he was reacting to. Would have been much better IMHO if he had just calmly explained to the interviewer (with real facts) why what he said and how he said it was ridiculous, shameful and embarrassing for himself, his network, his colleagues etc. Instead (again in my opinion) he made himself look nearly as "bad" as the interviewer(s). so; not "best" IMHO. Could (should?) have been much better!

The level of utter disrespect for The Netherlands in the USA is mind blowing and very sad. The Dutch are one of the most important founding fathers of American culture. Freedom, New York, Santa Claus, pancakes and democracy. Yet the Dutch get no credit and have been actively been erased from American history by the English history writers. Very very sad.

interesting! A jump from a 10 year old ProWrestling style verbal slugfest over speedskating (kind of) to the 17th century when "The Dutch" owned Manhattan and New York was called New Amsterdam! Also interesting end to your post; "Very very sad"... I was about to ask if you shouldnt be in court or something...'But it's not in all caps, so nevermind and anyway I guess now it's "the turn"" for some Dutch people to teach/preach how superior "we" are... I'll just be quiet while I wait for it...

I'm from the Netherlands and I absolutely hate my 30 paid days off every year. Hate it! Affordable health care, clean parks, safe and reliable public transport, affordable schooling, safe schooling, never any mass shootings? Horrifying! Nobody ever goes bankrupt for needing medical assistance! Did you know that in the Netherlands we pay more income taxes but as a result we get all of the above? Did you know we don't even HAVE a "credit rating" that you Americans are trained to dance to? We are pathetic! Most of us don't even NEED a car because the infrastructure is 100% supportive and safe for bicycles. Anyway. The Americans who moved to the Netherlands never want to move back to the USA.

If Dutch no-credit-rating is anything like my Belgian no-credit-rating, then you do have one. But it's way simplified compared to the American ones. I had to get a car loan a few years ago. When giving you a loan, they look at things like: - How long have you been a customer at this bank? New customers have a harder time getting a loan. - Are you a single person, or do you have a partner? Single persons have a harder time getting a loan, as the bank otherwise might fall back on the income of your partner. - Do you have a reliable income? People with short-term contracts and people not currently working have a harder time getting a loan. - Did you have a loan in the last five years? This is a big one. At least in Belgium, there is a database banks are all connected to where they can see if you had a loan before, and if you always paid the loan back on time. As far as I understand, it's binary; you are either in good standing or you're not. But at least this point compares a bit to the American credit rating system. Also, if you hadn't have a loan in the last five years, you are erased from that database, and you can start over again. But here's the thing: if you're not in the database (because you don't loan money a lot), it does not automatically count as being in good standing, and you'll have to convince the bank using the other bullet points above.

@@amyloriley That's all true, but it's nowhere near the gamification that Americans are REQUIRED to undergo by having multiple credit cards and paying them off to raise their rating in order to ever qualify for any loans. In the USA you're being trained to take debt constantly because you need to for a good credit rating. In Europe, that's nowhere near as extreme.

Jillert Anema is Dutch directness squared, so it's always great - but honest & very informative - entertainment, even on Dutch TV. Notice how he, the "winning coach" so to speak, simply tries to keep his eye on the ball at the start. Stick tt matter at hand, which is the question of why the US team failed medal-wise. That's it. Coach Jillert is explaining in his best English (pretty decent for an older gen. Dutchie) to these US -presstitu..- journalists with zero knowledge of the sport, how things came about. Then the infotainment guy starts off on a wild tangent, and you can just see Jillert thinking "Okay, so that's gonna be the game we're playing". And he quickly shifts gears from giving an honest and direct answer tt main question, to countering and happily joining the guy in some verbal shooting from the hip. Clearly all in good fun and I can even see the guys having a Heinek.. (no, not that horse p!ss plz!) afterwards. So it started with a serious question, but it ended in hilarious entertainment. As the coach said: no biggie. Cheers from Amsterdam! P.s.: 10k speed skating races are among the most epic I've seen, but one has to understand how things work to feel the excitement: lap times; race development set against expectations beforehand; usual way each skater builds his race; how each skater has been developing throughout the season beforehand, foreign skaters included; race tactics knowing all this; the fact that a skater can "die" but also be "resurrected" during a race this long; skating technique indicators that are "tells" of how the skater is doing; how skaters adapt technically tt circumstances at hand (ice conditions, altitude/atmo pressure etc.); and then the way the skaters are reacting to each other, do they allow their opponent to derail their usual way of racing a 10k, do they simply race each other (which is how most average Americans would like it) or do they focus on the clock & try to stick tt race plan? Thus a 10k race takes place on three levels simultaneously: against the clock, your opponent and against yourself. For viewers it's a 3 for one treat if you know where to look. Great stuff!

Actually what I remember of what Dutch analysts said of the American speed skating debacle at Sochi at the time, was that everything was haphazardly prepared, not just the suits. The primary problem they said is that Team USA did a lot of high altitude training and then went to a low altitude Olympics. Only the USA media wanted to keep on harping on about the suits..

I think if we would multiply our land mass to match that of the US and multiple our wealth by that same number,,, it would be pretty close if not better 😂😂

That one dude must have quite the dose of American pride if he can't take a little bit of honesty. I feel like he heard one thing, misunderstood it, took offense, and refused to listen to anything else that was said. I'm not saying American pride's a bad thing, I think we should all take at least some pride in where we come from, as long as we know that our place of origin isn't the be all end all of all that is good in the world. I don't really know what the argument about money has to do with anything in this instance. They were talking about sports, not how much money a country makes. A country can be piss poor and still be amazing at a certain sport, I don't see the logic. Either way, coach held his own. And yeah, even as someone who doesn't really care about speed skating, or ice skating in general, I still feel someone proud whenever I hear that we won a metric fkton of medals again at the olympics.

Always funny to read the reactions of my fellow Dutchies comparing rugby and american football. Those sports have zero simularities. Rugby is a very classic, fluent dynamic sport with muscular athletic guys. American football is a strategy game. Like a sort of brutal chess. It is static, with short explosive plays to gain territory. The players differ in posture depending on their role on the field, what also makes it an injury-prone game. And yes, the ball is also different. As a rugbyball is shorter, rounder and designed to throw backwards. The american football is pointier and designed to throw forward. I like both sports, but prefer american football. It's amusement value is much higher than most of you guys think.

Exactly the thing, there's sports that are more challenging to do so, need more talent, training to compete on a high level. Yes, American Football or Soccer/Football are more popular amongst viewers although I don't rate these athletes as better sportspeople. They make more money, and in that perspective skating doesn't earn these athletes a fat paycheck but these people do it for the love of the sport and try to be the best in their discipline. Some sports are underrated and sometimes I find it very unfair in terms of salary.

The problem is that handegg isn't that exciting to watch to Europeans. I tried to watch the Superbowl once (the NFL used to pay loads to promote it in the UK) and fell asleep. I went downstairs and my brother was struggling to stay awake as well. Neither of us have tried to watch the sport again. The problem is that one move is made and then the game stops for longer than the previous move. Rinse and repeat. This isn't appealing to us when we have such fast moving, big impact sports. I've had a similar discussion in the past few days with a yank who didn't understand that just because something is big or popular in murica that that isn't the same around the world. He tried to claim that baseball was a worldwide sport but cricket wasn't. That handegg was but rugby wasn't. To prove this he pointed out that baseball was the national sport of Cuba. That murican leagues were the best in the world and nothing else came close from elsewhere. Not understanding that murican leagues just aren't watched elsewhere.
