It really is worthwhile watching the entire shows. A large part of these pieces, are that they will often link to others later on in the show. It's very, very clever stuff. And re the James Veich stuff... I first saw Dave Gorman in the very early 1990s when he did the same sort of thing but using an overhead projector. He's 100% the original.

I'm a huge fan of DG but have you seen his earliest standup (it's here on YT) from the late 80s or very early 90s, to be honest it was not a patch on what he became, in my opinion anyway, introducing himself as a comedic poet. I'm just glad he stuck with it and found his way soon after that though and is incredibly talented yep. love + health + wealth = happiness! (ding!)

I may be out of touch, but the Express falls in-between the 'red tops' like The Sun, The Mirror and the broadsheets like The Daily Telegraph and The Times. For me Dave Gorman is one of those slow burn comedians, keeping you smiling and chuckling pretty much all the time as he delves into a topic and manages to keep it going, and fresh, at each level.

  • @achinton

Yeah, there's a weird class divide with British papers. The "tabloids" would be The Sun, The Mirror, The Star - definitely working class. And the "broadsheets" would be The Times, The Telegraph, The Guardian, The Financial Times - for upper class / university educated folks. But then you have the Daily Mail and The Express, which would like to pretend that they are better than the tabloids, but frankly there's not much to objectively separate them, in terms of their (lack of) objectivity and sensationalism, from the tabloids, other than that they like to clothe themselves in a little more middle-class respectability.

The Daily Express is a tabloid newspaper but isn't like more downmarket ones. In some ways it's worse. No nude women etc but a view of Britain straight out of the 1930s or 1950s. It has an idealised view of the UK before foreigners and liberals and feminists undermined the fabric of British society. I always feel that if a person in their 20s read it they would instantly age 50 years. It's dull as ditch water and remarkably embarrassing. But people over 90 love it.
