    Well actually this video is not for beginners,its actually complicated explanation. All you need to know is: Types of spinners 1)finger spinner Type of finger spin bowling(for right hand bowlers) a) off spin - turns to right side after hitting the ground. b) doosra- turns to left side after hitting the ground(although deemed as an illegal delivery now) c) teesra- has revolutions so the batsman things it would turn but it goes on straight. d)carrom ball- turns the same way as a doosra ,however thrown with a different grip e) flicker- it is a faster delivery , usually goes straight,thrown by flicking the finger fast. f) Arm ball- it is thrown like an off spinner but it does not turn and angles into the wicket. 2)wrist spinners: includes leg spinner( right arm bowlers) and Chinaman spinner (left arm bowlers) Types of wrist spin( for right arm) a) leg spin - turns to left side after hitting the ground. b) googly- turns to right side after hitting the ground c) flipper- usually goes on straight however it is much faster. d) top spinner- usually goes on straight however it bounces more than usual e) slider- it has revolutions like a leg spinner but goes on straight therefore confusing the batsman. For left hand bowlers every direction is reversed.

    A googly is bowled with the action to spin one way, but with the fingers, it is made to spin the opposite way - it is extremely hard to spot it coming, and once it bounces, it's too late! It can be a little easier if the batsman knows the bowler well. As you realised, it's all about mind games, and the idea is that even if you don't take the wicket, you force the batsman into continuous defensive play and deny him the chance (and confidence) to score runs.

    Some bowlers hide it better than others. Seeing more of the back of the hand can be a giveaway and there other giveaways with the general bowling action with some bowlers. The legendary Clarrie Grimmet realised some batsmen were picking his googly because they could hear his fingers click, so he practised clicking the fingers of his left hand at random times to confuse strikers.

    This is where bowling I think is a bit more complex and intricate than pitching in baseball. It's because in cricket you have an additional dimension to bowling compared to pitching in baseball which is that the ball pitches (or bounces) before the batter can take a swing. Spin bowlers use the pitching/bouncing to their advantage to make it spin one way, the other, or not spin at all! They can get tricky when they make it look like it is going to spin towards or away from batter (off break, leg breaks), but instead it maintains its line (top spin or flipper), or it spins the opposite way (googly and doosra). Then when you add the dimensions of movement in the air (the flight of ball and sliders), skidding when it pitches (depending on quality of pitch), less bounce or more bounce (top spin and flipper). This is not yet to even talk about fast bowling.

    On the defense of baseball, only about 15% of pitches are even put into play, whereas with cricket it seems to be a much higher rate. The difference is each pitch in baseball is less important and there's not much defensive swinging done in baseball.

    @@Bd0MZ Yeah I understand. As you say, in cricket more of the balls are in play (there are no foul balls as the whole oval is in play), batters can take more time and have more options to score runs or just defend, but they only bat once (or twice in "test match" cricket) because there is only one inning. Cricket tends to be considered a batsmans game. So good batters tend to get more adulation than good bowlers. But Bowlers can also get the adulation if they stand out. I get the impression that in baseball the pitcher is the more interesting player than the batter. But then again they say Babe Ruth is the Goat and he was a batter if I'm not mistaken. Ask who is the goat in cricket and it's Don Bradman a batter.

    I don't know much about baseball, but I've learnt a little about the pitch types, and against the backdrop of their respective sports, I'd say pitching and bowling are roughly equally skilful processes. Given the very high spin RPMs that pitchers can achieve, if they bounced the ball off a surface they would probably turn it as well.

    The googly is the leg spinner's main deception. The action looks very similar to a standard leg break, but the ball will spin in the opposite direction. Leg spinners will bowl mainly leg breaks with some googlys, flippers and top spinners. Very few Off spinners can bowl a doosra and instead rely on a straight ball for variation which have been given various fancy names as shown here, but they all basically go straight on.

  • @mwwoggy

    The video you reactd to isn't well named - there are really only 2 types of spin bowling, Wrist and Finger. These are all variations of those two types. Some bowlers rely on 1 or 2 variations, others like Warne have 5-6 that they rely on. Also, some of these are actually the same thing, but named differently just because it's the other spin method being used. The ones that are cinfusing as hell to pick up are the Teesra / Flicker and the Flipper / Top Spinner as from a batting perspective, the ball looks like it's spinning, but then just goes far straighter than expected once it hits the pitch. Besides those immense turns people like Warne could get, this is generally how spinners get batsmen out - by setting them up with balls that turn, and then suddenly one doesn't.

    5:39 Off Break is the natural motion that you mentioned in a previous video. Off Spinners are Finger Spinners, a righty spins the ball to the right & a lefty (aka Orthodox Spinner) spins the ball to the left. 10:00 Googly is the Ball spinning the opposite direction as the regular Leg Spin. So, righty Leg Spinner spins the Ball to the left but the Googly is supposed to Spin to the right while looking like it'll go to its usual left direction. In this clip the Googly didn't spun that much so you couldn't spot that.

    A leg break bowler (aka right-hand wrist-spinner) the stock ball is one that, from a right hand bat's perspective spins from leg to off. The traditional alternative for a wrist spinner is the googly that spins the other way with (almost) the same action. It is achieved by rotating the wrist further round to change the direction; the observant batsman needs to realise there is more of the back of the hand showing than with a leg break where more of the side of the hand is visible. It was 'invented' by an English player, BJT Bosanquet, in the early 1900s. In Australia it was known as the 'Bosie' (they have a simple formula for nicknames there) or the 'wrong un.' Bosie seems to have died out now but wrong 'un is still used alongside googly. A left-hand wrist spinner is still often referred to as a 'chinaman and googly' bowler ('chinaman' is the left-handers' default ball) .

  • @whattiler5102

    With an off-spinner (or left-arm equivalent) the batsmen know which way it is turning; it's not a mystery but you still to be able to play it and score off it regularly enough. For a right hand bat looking down the pitch it will turn from 'off' to 'leg' (right to left but that only works for right-handers). When it is bowled by a left-armer to a right-hander it spins from leg to off (left to right). For a left hand bat both of these are reversed. This is generally the stock or default ball for finger spinners so they will usually have variations like an arm ball or over spinner, etc.

  • @kingspeechless1607
    @kingspeechless16078 ай бұрын

    Bowlers designated as "finger spinners' are either . right-handed offspinners or a left-handed orthodox spinners. They rotate the ball with the index finger and middle finger so an 'offie' spins it from left to right from their perspective whilst the left-armer spins it from right to left with their stock deliveries. Doosras are a way for them to spin the ball in the opposite directions but after being the 'king of the spin bowlers' for a few years in the 'noughties' it was revealed by technology (close up and slowmo cameras and laboratory equipment that it is almost always an illegal delivery within the laws of cricket because of the degree of flex in the arm. .

    Dude, the way you think about a game, diving deep into things is amazing. I've been watching cricket since my childhood and although I know about all the terms, I never bothere going into details of the biomechanics of things until few years back. Here are a few tips that might help you remembering things. I'm going with the assumption that both batman and bowler are right handers. There are two types of spin bowlers in cricket 1. Finger spinners 2. Wrist spinners. There are two sides relative to the batsman (in this case right handed batsman) 1. Leg side (right hand side from the bowler's point of view or side where the leg of the batsman is) 2. Off side (left from bowler's POV or the side where batman's bat is) Now just hold a ball and try to spin it with the index finger. Most likely it's gonna be easier for you to spin it clock wise. And if this ball lands on the ground with clock-wise spin it'll turn towards right (i.e. from off side to leg side i.e. off break or off spin) Similarly, try to grab the ball with your entire hand (use all four fingers). The natural way to spin it would be counter-clock-wise. If this balls lands on the ground with counter clock spins, it'll turn towards left (i.e. from leg side to off side i.e. leg break or leg spin). Conclusion: - Finger spin = off break - Wrist spin = leg break Variations: 1. Finger/Off spinner: Off spinners have added variation to their spins to confuse the batsmen. Some of them are - Dusra - Illegal now, but the ball turns the other way. The variation is done so that the action of the bowler looks pretty much the same to the regular finger spin but the ball comes out from the back of the hand. Watch a video for this. It's hard to explain how that works. - Carrom ball - Here you use the middle finger to flick the ball but in the other direction (counter-clock). - Arm ball - Same action, same spin but the ball 'goes with the arm motion' and doesn't spin. Usually done by bowling quicker and imparting less revolutions on the ball. - Top spinner - If you bring your hand to the right side of the ball and try to spin it with your finger like usual, the spin is gonna be towards the batsman (not the right or left of him) looking from the top of the ball. This makes the ball gain speed when it lands on ground (because the spin is take the ball towards the batsman. If you watch tennis or table tennis, top spin is quite easy to understand. 2. Leg/Wrist spin: - Googly: Bowled with the same action and wrist movement but you release the ball from back of the hand by twisting your wrist. This reverses the spin on the ball and the ball starts turning from off to leg side instead of leg to off side. - Flipper: Top spin done using wrist basically.... with the same action as a leg break. Hope that helps.

    reverse the logic for left handed bowlers.....but the terms finger and wrist spin are handedness agnostic so I use them instead of off spin or leg spin. Less confusing that way.

  • @kingspeechless1607
    @kingspeechless16072 жыл бұрын

    The leg-spinner's standard delivery spins (along the axis of the seam) away (or 'leaves') the right-handed batsman towards the offside. The googly is bowled with the same grip and imparts the same spin but the whole hand rotates so that the bowler is showing the back of the hand to the batsman; when the ball leaves the hand the 'axis' of the seam is pointing towards the leg side so the ball will spin that way when it hits the pitch. Accomplished bowlers may have their own googly variations but they are usually minor variations of speed, flight, etc. One of the greatest leg-spinners of an earlier generation, Clarrie Grimmet, found that keen-eared batsman could pick his googly because of the 'click' of his fingers so he developed a very clever variation where he occasionally and deliberately clicked the fingers of his left hand to confuse the batsman.

  • @kingspeechless1607
    @kingspeechless16078 ай бұрын

    A right-handed legspin ( or more pertinently 'wrist-spinner') spins the ball by rotating the wrist and the default ball spins from right to left. The spin is imparted by the wrist not the fingers and the ball comes out of the back of the hand not the the front as with a legitimate finger spinner. . It's difficult to explain but obvious when looked at, that if the bowler 'over-rotates' the hand instead of the ball pointing to the offside it is pointing to the 'on' or 'legside'. That means the ball will spin that way IF it 'grips' on the pitch. You do need to take on board the terms 'off', and 'on or leg' to denote the two halves of the cricket field from the perspective of the bowler and batsmen. The other obvious difference is that the cricket ball usually bounces so it is 'more three dimensional' than baseball pitching. A ball can move laterally in the flight one way (Away from the rotation of the ball) then bounce and go the other way with the direction of rotation; the rotation of the ball can also make the ball bounce a bit further up the pitch or closer to the bowler.

    The beauty of spin bowling is that the batsman wouldn't exactly know which type of spin is going to be the on the next ball unless he's a very good batsmen who perfected playing spin. Good batsmen always watches the hand of the bowler to know what kind of spin are they going to bowl. But what makes the spin bowling hard to play or in other words hart to not get out is the flyte(the projectile) of the ball. The batsman have to pick the line, length, pace variation, bounce/flyte and the type of spin that's going to be on that particular delivery in very short time. He needs to be aware of the field set in order to know where the gaps are and sometimes few deliveries has typical field set and he might assume that a specific delivery might be bowled but he should also acknowledge that it could be a trap as well. Due to the flyte, the bounce is going to be more and hence majority of the momentum of the ball is going to be upwards in the Arc of hitting for batsman, hence a false shot could induce the chance of hitting the ball into the air and creates a chance of getting out by caught. The spin of the ball and it's deviation is highly influenced by the pitch(turf they're playing on) conditions like the dryness/ wetness or green/ normal or the surface and things like that. Even the batsman did everything correctly, a slight error in timing the ball or selecting a wrong shot could cause him a loss of wicket. So most of the times, it's going to be a treat to watch good batsmen playing good spin bowlers. It's like a contest especially in test format but i love watching t20s cause batsman hit the ball without any analysis while the bowler keeps trying different strategies... That's when we understand how major role is played by the pitch conditions. Ooh God!! Cricket is such a beautiful game. 70% mind and 25% physical and 5% chance of luck.

    People who find cricket boring are often people who just don't see the intricacies of what's happening. The longer the version of the game the more of a game of chess it becomes. Fast bowlers and spin bowlers if good will bowl the same ball over and over again, making the batsman get use to it and become automatic in their response even allowing the batsman to make runs (typical for spin bowling) and then change out of nowhere changing the direction of the ball or where it lands to defeat the batsman's swing or defence or force them to edge a ball into slips/fielders. This is why tests are my favourite form of the game, watching the bowlers play their mind games

    In general in top-flight cricket you cannot bowl a doosra anymore until someone figures out how to bowl it within the laws of the game. It is the off-spinner's version of the leg-spinner's googly and a decade or so ago it was all the rage for 'finger spinners'. However, scientifically-conducted tests with super slow-mo cameras suggested it could not be bowled without excessive (unlawful) flexing/bending of the arm beyond what is permitted (15 degrees). On the other hand the 'leggies' googly has been legitimate for more than a century because all the manipulation of the ball is done with the wrist, which has always been accepted within the laws.

    The "doosra" (invented in the sub-continent, it means something like the 'other one' ) became the 'must have' delivery for most of the top off-spinners and orthodox left-arm spinners (the left hand equivalent of the off-spinner) in the world in the late 1990s and 2000s. However it led to some of them having their bowling actions lab-tested for legality (including two of the bowlers in this video); it seems from further testing that it is virtually impossible for the great majority of bowlers to bowl it with a legal action. I suspect the same applies to the 'teesra' for many bowlers (especially Saeed Ajmal shown here) and there have always been other ways of bowling a straight ball with some disguise.

    Cricket has two sides with respect to the batter. They are splitting the field vertically. "Leg" side - the side where his hips are. "Off" side - the other side So an off break to a right handed batter is a leg break to a left hander and so on. In cricket you can't flex your bowling arm more than 15 degrees. More than that you are cheating (called as "chucking" the ball by the brits). AP

XD However, there are again sub-methods: Swing and Seam bowling. Swing is basically fast balls that move in teh air before they hit the ground, whereas Seam bowling are fast balls that hit the deck and then veer off depending on spin imparted and the direction the seam on the ball is facing. There is also medium pace bowling which has the same methods, but at a slower pace - fast balls are normally between 85-100mph, medium is considered almost anything under that. A decent fast bowler can keep it consistantly in the 90's

    IMO this video is confusing as hell for people who know nothing about cricket. The first thing you should know is that in spin bowling there are 4 main variants. Right arm finger spin (Generally called off-spinners) Right arm wrist spin (Generally called leg spinners) Left-arm finger spin (Generally called left-arm bowlers) Left-arm wrist spin (Generally called china man because they are extremely rear to see) For both the finger spinners, the default delivery will be an off-break (ball turns to the right after bouncing). But for the left-arm finger spinner, the ball turns in the opposite direction so it spins and turns in the opposite direction(ball turns to the left after bouncing). For both the wrist spinners, the default delivery will be the leg break (ball turns to the left after bouncing). And just like for finger spinners, the left-arm wrist spinners default delivery spins and turns in the opposite direction (ball turns to the right after bouncing). So technically the default delivery for right arm finger spin and left-arm wrist spin is off-break (ball turns to the right after bouncing). And the default delivery for right arm wrist spin and left-arm finger spin is off-break (ball turns to the left after bouncing). Apart from the default delivery, the right arm finger spinner's variation deliveries are doosra(meaning the second one in Hindi and Urdu), carrom ball, arm ball, and the theesra (meaning the third one in Hindi and Urdu). The doosra and carrom ball spin in the opposite direction of the off-break therefore ball turns to the left after bouncing. And the arm ball and theesra goes straight on. For the left-arm finger spinner, it's exactly the same but the turn is in the opposite direction. Therefore the doosra and carrom ball turns to the right instead of the left. Coming to wrist spin, the variations are googly, topspin, slider, and flipper. The google spins in the opposite direction of the leg break therefore ball turns to the right after bouncing. The top spin, slider and flipper goes straight on at varying speeds. For the left-arm wrist spinner, it's exactly the same but the turn is in the opposite direction. Therefore the googly turns to the left instead of the right.

    The googly is a fake leg spin ball - so the batsman is expecting a ball to spin towards the offside, but it spins back towards them, like an off spin ball. I think googlies are only by leg spinners, but I could be wrong.

  • @BootlegJackSparrow

    BTW since it's hard to understand googly by watching in videos, it's a ball bowled by a leg spinner, who will have a typical legs pin bowling action, to make the ball spinn off side ( opposite to leg side ) while fooling the batsman by giving him an illusion that he bowled a leg spinning ball with his bowling action. This means the action won't change but the direction of spin will change depending on how perfectly you bowled the googly. In order to understand googly better, we must understand leg spin in and out so we can identify what the bowler is doing with his hand while bowling the googly. Take a ball and try yourself so it's easier that way.

Do check out some highlights (they're ~3 mins long per game). My team is the Perth Scorchers, & we're looking quite good (we're in with a solid chance to win it). Tomorrow, they're facing the Sydney Strikers, which might be a good one to catch the highlights of. The table is easily googleable, so you can check out the current standings of the teams. ✌😄 [Note. G'day to the sub-continent fans of the Scorchers! 😉]

    How? Because I have no idea about cricket, therefore I don't actually know what's good. But then I ask for suggestions and people say "I don't know why these reactors can't come up with their own ideas." Guess it's a lose/lose situation for me?

    The game is very different between the levels and standard of competition. A great club batsmen who seems impossible to get out or control can be made to look useless by a test match bowler. Brilliant club bowlers who appear to be top class rarely want to bowl to any 1st Class batsman twice. The 1st Class ( test match quality) batsmen usually have an impregnable defence or an alien eye ( unbelievable hand to eye coordination ). Standard bowling will not get them out ..... the bowler has to trick them out, or simply get lucky. Many great bowlers like Dennis Lillee took more wickets with their loose ( bad) balls than with their unplayable ( top quality ) balls. lol When Lillee was at his best the batsmen could not score against him, but that was when he took wickets with the odd BAD or loose ball. lol

    Think of bowling In cricket like 10 pin bowling. Instead of bowling the ball under arm you swing your arm over your shoulder to try and hit the pins.. But a good way to understand spin is to get any type of ball and spin it in your hands. Even a tennis ball, just flick it between your hands and you'll get it....

    Trust me, baseball pitchers know a bit about spinning the ball. There's one pitch that is bowled with a similar grip to that of a left arm spinner, and in some cases they also spin their pitches at higher RPM than even a big ripping leg break.

    The googly comes out looking like a leg spinner but spins the opposite way, Abdul quadir of Pakistan was one of the best googly bowler's he had a better version of it than Warne did.
