    The pops and bangs is the antilag.. fuel is squirted in just before the turbo to keep it spinning at max speed to prevent the turbo having to spool up and lose power.. to go with that is often a flame that shoots out of the exhaust.which is any unburnt fuel igniting in the pipe. im sure there is a much more technical explanation, and more accurate..

  • @Fez135
    @Fez1352 жыл бұрын

    The pop sound that you're mentioning is a byproduct of flat-shifting. These cars use dog-ring engagement gearboxes. The dogs are teeth on the selector rings that give a really positive, if clunky, engagement. To change up a gear the gearbox needs to be unloaded before the dogs will disengage from each other, so a signal is sent from a strain gauge in the gear lever/switch in the paddles to cut ignition for a very short moment. This drops engine power briefly, allowing the dogs to disengage and be shifted into engaging the next gear. Fuel isn't stopped being fed into the cylinders during this time, however. So the unburnt fuel passes through the engine without igniting and then ignites in the hot exhaust causing the momentary bang. All this is so the driver doesn't have to lift his foot from the throttle pedal while he changes up, saving valuable time per gear change. As a few people have said already, the other type of popping/banging is the anti-lag system. This is a combination of ECU parameters that hold the throttle open slightly/engage a diverter valve when you lift off the pedal, alters ignition and injection timing so that the ignition event takes place with the exhaust valves already opened, and using this gas expansion directly into the exhaust to keep the turbocharger's turbine pressurised, and therefore rotating. This, in combination with a blow-off valve in the charge piping, results in the driver having instant boost pressure generation when he gets back on the loud pedal because the engine isn't having to spend time and energy overcoming the inertia of the turbocharger. TLDR: It means the engine is more responsive when you're on and off the throttle a lot like a rally driver is.

    Sorry about the essay here. I tried to be as concise as possible while still getting the information across. There're a lot of old wives tales around the way these systems operate and their purpose and people have accepted them as truth, when often times it's actually a lot simpler and more utilitarian.

    For a bit of context because I dunno how much you know, Each car has 2 people, a navigator (he has notes of each stage and tells the driver in advance what’s coming up so the driver is prepared) and the driver, they race on a course split into “stages” they leave at separate times and essentially it’s a time trial, the added up times of each stage make a final time, then any penalties etc are added and you have a winner 🤙

    "Is that the exact same turn?" Little did he know, that each rally is like 200km (100+ miles) of the timed special stages, so some of the corners are quite similar, especially in the mountains, there's a lot of hairpins. I also obviously loled at "You have to switch the brake pads after like 3 races", they obviously tend to switch them a few times in each rally, especially if it's on tarmac, where you require more braking force. And believe it or not, a lot of the snowy stuff in this video (apart from the few clips from Sweden) is in the south of France (the famous Rally Monte Carlo in the French Alps) and in Italy (Rally Monza, which takes place on and around the famous Monza racing circuit, known for hosting the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix).

The mechanics for each team are miracle workers, they can change out the transmission, both front and rear differentials, all four suspension dampers, brake discs, pads (with a full brake bleed and refill), replace or "repair" (read: hammer and duct tape) body damage, and have the car back on all four wheels and backing out of the pit area in like 28 minutes.

The only other rally with snow would be Rally Sweden but that's not driven on asphalt, but on snow covered gravel roads. An exception would be Arctic Rally Finland, but, like Sweden, it's driven on icy and snow covered gravel roads and was only there as a substitute for Sweden in 2021 due to Covid restrictions. 12:20 anti-lag, when you shift the exhaust pressure lowers in the turbo and cause a lack of boost that lead to a less amount of power available, by throwing a bit of gas in exhaust it creates a fast combustion (the boom) -> pressure -> boost -> more power available

    The popping you can hear would be the anti lag. The engine's ECU has a setting were the engine revs don't drop when you take your foot off the gas pedal. It's so the turbo is always on boost and you don't have to get it to spool up again.

  • @andrejturcan3324

    @andrejturcan3324

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes, it is anti lag system (ALS) , but it works a bit differently. Once the foot goes off the accelerator, the ECU changes the timing of the ignition and the spark plug fires not to initiate the expansion phase of the cycle, but during the exhaust phase, so the fuel mixture detonates "in the turbo" to keep it spinning and thus preventing the turbo lag when the accelerator is pushed again.

    That backfire you are asking for: when the car is accelerating is caused by the upshifts, when braking by downshifts and anti-lag. The reason why backfire happens is the electronic control of the fuel mixture and that when some excess fuel goes into into the exhaust yet unburned it ends up igniting when it reaches the end of the exhaust as it mixes with oxygen and receives heat from the engine.

Great fun if you drove it like a looney, but no fun to go to the shops in. Obviously it's designed for racing & not a family runaround. Couldn't wait to get my vauxhall astra SRI back.

    All we know about rallyedrivers is : they tend to like to listen to "Rip&Tear" from the Doom soundtrack, we have no clue as to why . The pop-sound is mostly from shifting ... WRC´s are really short geared (max 210kph on the fastest of stages) to always have that ultra-accelaration on all 4 wheels

  • @justice9775
    @justice97752 жыл бұрын

    theres two different pops you can hear the clip of the car doing circles is the cras sequential transmission sifting it makes a pop because it instantly shifts gears with no clutch, the next clip is a called antilag, basically it keeps the turbo spooled up by creating mini explosions this keeps the power from the turbo until you press the accelerator again

    That first crash was Ott (pronounced oit) Tanak after he hit the inside curb of the road and the front wheels lifted off the road, so he couldn't steer for half a second. He and his co-driver walked away with no injuries, didn't even feel dizzy. The thing is, after the trees, the car tumbled down a steep hill then went off a small cliff, landing about 25 feet later on its (destroyed) wheels on the road. They simply cursed a little, unbuckled, got out. Estonians are like the Finns in one way: They are both motorsports mad xD Here's the official WRC channel's onboard: kzread.info/dash/bejne/o5qb1suno5Suc5s.html

    Fun fact : since 2004, France has been trusting the first place in WRC (except 2019 : Estonia). From 2004 to 2012 with Sébastien Loeb, from the french region of Alsace who retired after 9 world champion titles. Since 2012, his former rival and comrade, Sébastien Ogier has earned 8 world champion titles and is currently very well placed to earn his ninth, and he also comes from Alsace (CORRECTION : Provence!!) Same country, same first name, same number of titles (hopefully this year) ;) And by the way : the track you where wondering the country it was situated in, it could very well be in the French Alps, or Pyrénées, or Vosges : we have exactly this kind of mixed pine forrest in our mountain regions ;)

    When rally car engines backfire that means the driver is either up shifting or downshifting gears.

  • @Inferiis
    @Inferiis2 жыл бұрын

    as said below, but in a single, short comment: backfire is caused by unburnt fuel catching flame on the hot exhaust, which can be due to numerous reasons, like antilag or releasing the gas at high rpm.

    WRC cars are built stupidly tough so a lot of those crashes the driver and navigator walked away from with just a few bruises some cuts at best. the backfire is from shifting gears you can hear the rpm change from higher before the shift to a bit lower after. the backfire is more pronounced on a downshift than a upshift

    WRC spec cars produce aprox 350 ish HP , but make 500-600ft\torque. The popping sound is the ALS retarding timing while opening the fresh air valve producing a pulsed combustion in the exhaust manifold. I've used this system in my cars , the downside is that it shortens the turbo's life considerably.

    12:21 Pops & bangs are caused by backfires, often because of the unconsumed gas that is released in the exhaust when the driver slightly release the throttle. It happens because WRC cars might have fuel injection settings specific for races, not running catalytic exhaust, and straight pipes… so no way to limit pops & bangs like it would happen on regular cars.

  • @Spidouz

    @Spidouz

    PS: The fuel injection settings are called “anti lag”, which force fuel to be injected when throttle is released to keep the turbo running at full speed, and not slow down, so they can get full power when they use the throttle again.

But they do have all terrain vehicles (constructed by the crazy apes, of course) and designated drivers who, during the act of hauling ass, taunt each other to a race for safety (because why not, anf what better motivator for a competitive species to get from point a to b asap?)... wish I was creative enough... but hey!
