Im half american and half romanian. I moved to romania 3 years ago and i can say that it’s truly such a beautiful country. Glad to be a part of these wonderful people. Thank you for your reaction:)

I went to Romania a few times a while back, doing work for their Ministry of Justice prior to their joining the European Community. It was a lovely country with friendly people who, even though many were poor, always wanted to share whatever they had. My favourite city was Cluj-Napoca in the heart of Transylvania, the centre of which had not been flattened by Caecescu, so it still had an Austro-Hungarian empire feel to it. The alcoholic drink they had is normally called țuică, which is distilled on farms and sold by the roadside in old Coca-Cola bottles. The usual word for cheers is ‘noroc’ which just means ‘luck’.

That is very accurate sir, thank you kindly for your comment, but the alcoholic drink in Maramureș (where they filmed) is called "horinca" (learned that myself) and in the rest of Transilvania is called "palinca". Nice reaction Connor, thanks for the appreciation. To answer a few of your questions: 1) is Romania Balkan? Yes and no. Geographically, not really, aside from a small portion in the south-east of the country called Dobrogea (Rick didn't go there in this film). Culturally, however, yes, we are partially Balkan. We're very similar to our dear neighbors in Bulgaria and Serbia, but we're also different. We're at the same time Balkaners (like Serbs, Bulgarians, Albanians), East Europeans (like Ukrainians or Russians) and Central Europeans (like Poles, Hungarians, Slovaks or even Germans). 2) Is Romanian a Romance language? Yes, to a great degree (about 80%). It is thoroughly a Romance language, but unlike any other Romance language, with a hefty amount of Slavic influence (about 20%) - even our word for "yes" is "da", just like Bulgarian or Russian. There are, of course, other influences in the language, but to much smaller degrees - Hungarian, Turkish, German. But if you'd like a fun fact about Romania and the Romanian language, up until the second half of the 19th century, Romanian used to be the only Romance language written in the Cyrillic alphabet, not Latin. Similarly, to this day, Romanians (and Moldovans) are the only major Romance population in the world that is majority Orthodox Christian. 3) Is the language of the Roma (gypsy) people also Latin? No, it is not. In fact, there are more varieties of Romani languages, and they're quite different from each other, but as a general characteristic, they're more similar to languages spoken in the Rajasthan state of India in terms of vocabulary. When it comes specifically to the varieties of Romani languages spoken by the Roma in Romania, you'd not understand much of anything if you spoke any Balkan language, including Romanian. However, from the point of view of grammar, syntax and phonology, it is part of the Balkan Sprachbund, so even if you spoke other languages native to the Indian subcontinent, you wouldn't understand it. It is the only Indian language that is spoken exclusively outside of India. 4) The Palace of the Parliament in Bucharest is still more disliked by the people of Romania, because of Ceausescu. Otherwise, we would promote it more, since it's the second largest administrative building in the world, after your very own Pentagon (also the heaviest). 5) Romania became Romance speaking because back in ancient times, it was conquered and colonized by the Romans. After they left, because of those beautiful mountains, it was much harder for the local population to culturally assimilate with the bigger and stronger populations that came afterwards, such as the Avars, Pechenegs, Slavs, Huns, and so on. Thus, the population remained by and large Romance speaking, and eventually assimilated most of the incoming peoples into its ethos in the broader Carpathian area. The fact no major center of power of either the Slavs or any others was truly close by made the influence of those centers of power lower and helped with the preservation of Latin, by contrast with Bulgaria and North Macedonia, which is also very mountainous and which was very Latin at the time, but which is also where the southern Slavs centers of power were, such as Preslav, Ohrid or Veliko Tarnovo. Ga maar dan. Wizzair uit Eindhoven naar Debrecen, HU of Cluj, RO en je bent er zo. Belasting voor eenmanszaak is in Roemenië dit jaar (januari 2024) gestegen van 1% naar 3% maar het is alsnog ver onder dat kk bedrag in Nederland van 50%. Roemenië is niet alleen paradijselijk mooi, maar het is ook een belastingparadijs. Wellicht goed om te weten. Groetjes

Peles castle - was built from King's own money. He sold 3 big properties in Germany to get the money. Not a dime from the country's budget. Entire cost in the range of 3 million gold francs . Don't even try to convert to today currency , you will get a shock .Library walls covered in Cordoba skins , Murano glass and crystals , mahogany and piper wood , etc , etc . This is whatever you want but not a hunting lodge . I would invite the guy who did the documentary to stay with me for a couple ( to a case ) of beers and I can educate him a little bit about my country. He did a ...tourist ...documentary , not a real one

Thanks, man. I'm living in Cluj (the second biggest city in Romania, after the capital). I saw all these places, but your movie creates me a lot of emotions. We speak latin language (like Italy, Spain, Portugal France). Gypsies speak a language similar with some indian dialect. At least numbers 1-10 are so similar with indian language (google it). Romans conquered Dacia (where is Romania today) in year 100 AD and a lot of romans remain here after their armies retreated. Also, the ancient dacian language was kind close with latin It is said that romans didn't need translators to get along with dacian people.

Aahh Rick Steve... I remember using his walking audio tours in a bunch of places around Europe they're awesome. Romania is an awesome country.

hey, Connor. to answer your question about Roma languages, No, they are not Romance languages but actually more closely related to Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati, etc. :) I happen to know a little bit of vocabulary because my grandpa was Roma, and when looking at Sanskrit for my linguistics degree (it's the Latin of Indic languages) I recognised a lot of words, especially stuff like numbers: 1 through 5 in the language that my grandfather spoke and Sanskrit are Romani: (y)Ek, dooy, trin, shtar, panj, Sanskrit: Eka, dva, trii, chatvarah, pancha

@@costinhalaicu2746 well, they are related since they are both Indo-European languages, but I will admit that they are also more similar than either are to the Germanic numbers, for instance. I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that the Balto-Slavic branch broke off rather recently, so a lot of the innovations that the earlier branches (Germanic, Romance, Greek, Celtic, etc.) have had a lot of time to make aren't included. That's why the similarities to Sanskrit (an older language) are so obvious.

@@rasmusn.e.m1064 I think you're right in some way and wrong in others. The Slavic branch didn't broke off recently, in fact the proto-indo-europeans actually originate from the area north and east of the Black Sea (Yamnaya culture, in present day Ukraine and Russia), but they are a sort of midpoint between Vedic languages (Yamnaya > Andronovo in present day Central Asia > Indo-Aryans in Northern India) and Western European languages, since both of those evolved from proto-indo-european. Maybe that's the reason, I don't know. It's just interesting to me how one can find similarities in languages that are so disconnected geographically.

@@costinhalaicu2746 I think something might have got lost in translation there: my meaning was this: Balto-Slavic languages have some very conservative features, especially the Baltic branch, so I think that might explain why it looks more similar than other branches' words for things. But yeah, the geographical thing also makes sense: the area where Slavic has been spoken isn't really as heavy on natural boundaries as say the Caucasus (Armenian) or Scandinavia (Germanic) or the Greek islands, so continuous contact between relative faraway speakers might have had a conservative effect. Hard to glean, really.

@@carteunu467 He was quite an old father and my mother was 39 and she was English. He was 12 years older. My research tells me that the name itself seems to have originated in Rotterdam. I'm relatively good at tech. My cousin is actually the techie of the family and so is his son. Our mindscapes seem to be both forward looking, but I am an artist and he was a technical director for Starco and travelled all over the world solving problems on behalf of his company. Sadly, my father developed TB in the early 50s and had one lung working which eventually put too much of a strain on him. He was very hard working and skilled man despite that but he succumbed to a sudden heart attack in 1969 when I was 7. When he died. the entire factory had a whip round and from that obtained an entire month's wages for us. Even people on his bus route to work sent condolences. It was very touching for both of us that he was so liked by the people he met and worked with.

As a Romanian i feel obligated to answer all the questions, so here are the answers/clarifications to all the questions in the video 1:46 yes (it was also answered later on in the video at 9:53) 1:56 yes, we are a romance nation in a sea of slavs/huns, it happened because a lot of slavic / huns tribes travelled throw romania, we adopted some of their traditions/words, but we still mentained our romance origins. 2:47 The greeks made a colony (Tomis, curent day Constanta) that is now a big port in the black sea, and also yes, the culture in dobrujea is kindoff different than the rest, but its not only limited to there, our 3 main regions are similar, yet so different. 6:10 We are sometimes considered to be balkan culturaly, but geographicly only Dobrujea (south of the Danube) is balkan. 13:15 The highest peak of the carpathians is 2544 meters or 8346 feet (1.5 miles) vf. Moldoveanu ( peak Moldoveanu ) 18:50 ❤❤ :) A lot of people, especially romanians, say that Romania is a beautiful country 23:15 Its not considered a romance language, since its more similar to hindi rather than latin/any other romance language 24:08 Maramures is pretty near the region of Moldova ( not to be confused with the country Moldova, even tho we are very similar ), its more in the central north position. You forgot 1 little thing, we Romanians come from the Dacic tribe, after that we united with Getii and Became Geto-Daci, after that we where invaded by Rome, and we got about a third of our language from there, some words we got from the Otomans when they invaded and from time to time we adopt some words from different languages like French and lately do to media and the internet a lot of english words where adopted. Hope this clarifies things a bit, but I might have just confused you more... It's complicated.

I am from Romania and I would like to specify the following: 1. The area of ​​Romania was part of the Roman Empire between 106-272, and after that it was never effectively conquered. Thanks Connor! The local population was romanized following the Trajan's conquest, the Romanian language developed as a result and it sort of endured through the ages despite the migratory waves that went through these lands. The language developed in isolation from the rest of the romance group but underwent a renewed latin influence in the 19th century. It still has some slavic/hungarian/german/turkish influences, as expected given its history, but it's definitely much closer to italian and other romance languages (this is the reason why the largest communities of the Romanian diaspora are in Italy and Spain). The Roma language is not part of the same branch, the name just sounds similar, purely by coincidence. Different regions of Romania can be thought of as either more Balkan (the South), or Central-European (Transylvania), or Eastern European (Moldova), but as a whole, the country shares many cultural similarities with its neighbors, in terms of religion, traditions, and a history of communism and life behind the Iron Curtain. Also, toward the end of the clip, Rick doesn't say "cheers!" when he takes the drink, he just said the name of the region - Maramures.

How wrong you are. Stop promoting this aberration like the Romanians romanized the Dacian language. There is no scientific evidence for the 200 or so years of occupation to support this claim. The communist servants wanted to flatter the supreme comrade (Ceausescu) by associating the Romanian language with that of Italy.

The dictator (Ceausescu) built/ordered that "palace" to be the People's Palace, which now houses the Romanian Parliament, besides the rentable grand rooms. He also build/ordered the Bucharest metro/subway.

Hi there! This video just randomly appeared on my KZread and I have to say it felt amazing to watch it. I'm from Romania, from the city of Brașov actually (the guy in the video talked about it) and I wanted to confess that my heart is full of joy when I see such videos, especially when the americans talk about our country. I can say as well that we have a very beautiful country and Europe in general is gorgeous, but, let's be honest, every place on this Earth has something special to show. Unfortunately, the communist era have complicated the things a bit, but, we are happy and proud that it's over now and that we are part of the EU. I suppose that the soviets had a powerful impact on Eastern Europe society, but, we are on the good side of the road nowadays. In the end, I would like to tell you, that if you will wish and have the opportunity to visit Romania, do it, because (not wanting to be a nationalist) I could have seen the passion in your eyes watching that documentary. If one day you will come and visit our country, I will be more than happy to wish you a good journey and a nice visit. I'm so so sorry if this message is too long, but you made my heart grow. The clues in the name. The Romanians are historically the Romans. Emporer Trajan managed to bridge the Danube (1.1km wide!!! ) and the province was created in Romania. When they later retreated, they destroyed the bridge, leaving lots of people i guess (and the romance language)... No longer bridge was built for 1000 years!

I just love Rick Steves' videos: he is so repectful of the places and the peoples he visits and encounters! Romania is a very beautiful country indeed. Let's hope it doesn't get swarmed by dumb tourists who would ruin it! A couple of decades ago, I was working in a place where the cleaning lady was Romanian. The day after I'd seen a superb documentary on her country, I said to her, but?... What on earth are you doing in France? Your country is absolutely beautiful! She replied, with a slightly sad smile "Yes ... but there is no work there." From this documentary, it appears that the country is prosperous nowadays. Their joining the EU effect, I supose? I love the EU as much as Rick Steves!

You should check Wild Carpathia it goes more in depth with history of the land and also goes over all regions of Romania not only few popular ones… trust me!!! Is worth it!!

Slavic languages arrived in Balkans later, there is some Slavic influence in Romania language, we say da for yes, same as Russians but our language remained romance. We have been under foreign influence occasionally but kept the language.

I was iN Romania and i was amazed to See sich a beautiful Country! Cluj is really great Like a German City with beautiful architecture and very safe! Great restaurants and clean!!! Underrated country! Has so much to offer !

Romania is dope af and so are Romanians. But Cluj beats Bukuresht for me. Very good food and nice warm people. I wanna visit it for the 3rd time. It feels like home. Hi from Bulgaria.

The Bran fortress did not belong to Vlad but to his enemies in Brasov. Besides his fortress as a prince, the fortress built by him is the Poenari Fortress, in the heart of the mountains, in a much more spectacular landscape than the Bran Castle. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poenari_Castle

The latin language and history are traced to the 2 dacian wars (101-102, 105-106). After the second war romans took over the dacians and latinized everything. Even though the dacians were proper adversaries, so much so that the Roman armies had to change their armour, the romans wanted the dacian gold which was in abundance in the Carpathian mountains. Until the fall of the Bizantine empire, the majority of Romania's land was inhabited by romans and the descendents of dacians.

The word Roma is not derived from Roman, despite the similarity. Roma means man in their language, that is more related to Hindi and Sanskrit. Romanian , on the other hand, is the English version of "român", which derives from "roman", like in Roman citizen. Being a Roman citizen in ancient times was the cultural equivalent of being an American citizen nowadays. It gave you status and privileges and was a point of pride. The debate about Gypsies being called Roma is still going strong here, because of the confusion it creates with the Romanian, also because an older term for Roma was Romali, or Loma. I am not very knowledgeable in the subject, but some Gypsies were even called Sinti. Are they different from the Roma? Why the sudden wide spread use of the term Roma instead of the other existing variants? Is it because it is easier to confuse with Romanian?

The word "țigan" (gypsy) comes from greek and it means untouchable ( dirty) hence why it is considered offensive to some Roma. Also they weren't all wonderers some were brought in as slaves ... hence why there are different subtypes like musicians, craftsmen, home-hands etc

No. It`s Romance languages also known as Latin based languages, you know, as in Rome, which includes Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese and Romanian. Neither of whose ancestors come from India. You`re thinking the Roma, or gypsies who do indeed come from India. And their language is nothing like Romanian.

I was in '70 there on vacation with my parents. I think it was for almost 2 weeks. The place we stayed was Mamaya (hope i spell right) in a hotel boarding the beach. Much military back then on the streets in time of the dictator. I can remember people where poor because of oppression of him. But still the warmth of people never forgotten, even when i was young, it is something i remember as a good time. I also remember the roads where almost no cars. The guide told the car you had was from family who died, because it wasn't affordable to buy back then. It's good to see Romania has now much better times.

Back than people whas not poor, now they are poor, thats a lie! I am from this contry end that’s not true! It was a difficult period of time because Romania and Ceausescu paid all the country's foreign debt! Romania was the only country that paid its foreign debt to the last cent, but the Romanians had money, they even returned home with money from vacations! There was no food, it was shared because there was not enough for everyone!

I know you have reacted before to Romania. I have seen it on your channel. Yes, the mountains are the Carpathians and our language has been influenced by Latin , French, Slavic languages, Turkish and soon. Our contacts with these people over the centuries, we have been in conflict with the Ottoman empire for centuries. In the 19th century there has been a revival of the interest in our Latin origin- and also the big influence of French ( we have so many words taken directly from it). So it is like a melting pot, sort of.

Being born in Sighisoara is one of the reasons that my father was fluent in three languages and even added another two in his fifty eight years. Sadly, he passed away from a heart attack when I was only seven back in 1969.

The Roman Empire attacked Dacia when Trajan was emperor, he lost some battles there, after which he returned and managed to build a bridge over the Danube, which at that time was a miracle of technology, and thus managed to conquer the capital of Dacia but not Dacia in its entirety. That's how the Romanian people were born and since then the Latin language, although some theories say that a vulgar Latin was spoken in Dacia before the Roman Empire conquest. And the emperor Trajan, when he entered Dacia, is said to have said "I have returned to the lands of my ancestors", hence the conclusion that somewhat Latinity was already present in Dacia for some time.

Bullshit ! That was a speculation made by Constantin Drăgan based on the typical aquisition(Mancipatio) formal words: "I claim this land/house/slave/horse by the law of the ancestors"(Hunc ego hominem ex iure Quiritium meum esse)

Town or city sqares could not work in America, you will notice right across Europe there is little or no trash or as we call it, rubbish, blowing or lying around. The US is one of the litter capitals of the world. Another thing about US cities [and towns] are the miles and miles of cables that American seem to find very attractive supported by delapitated wooden poles. The fact that most streets in cities are known by numbers rather than a name is another thing that should be changed, over time obviously. Famous streets should be revered and given nice names, e.g. Regent Street, Piccadilly Circus, The Royal Mile, Penny Lane etc.

Yes, the mountains from Romania ar the Carpatians. 2. we romanians have multiple ways to speak, as our country was from 3 parts before WW1, and each of the countries that now form Romania were under diferent countries subordonation, so that's why we have diferent expresions in diferent parts of our country. 3. yes, Romania is in the balcans. more center-eastern european country.

To answer your question from 2:30, our people were here since the ancient times. We are descendants of a group of people called Dacians. After the Roman Empire invaded us in the 2nd century AD we were latinized and lived as a Province of the Roman Empire until it started collapsing. Eventually after many years of other countries occupying our lands, we finally rose up into 2 Romanian states (Wallachia and Moldavia) while our brothers to the west were occupied by the Hungarians who came all the way from Asia. After many years of hard fought battles against the Ottomans, Hungarians and even Germans for a bit, we managed to come together and unify into one country: Romania, which solidified our cultural identity and traditions. Sadly, after WW2, we have lost the valiant fight and became divided. The evil Russian horde stole and russified our brothers from the east (Moldova), and many of our former territories that were still occupied by the USSR aside from the modern territories of Moldova were kept by Ukraine, instead of handing them over to their rightful owners (us).

In Romania there are many cities, including Bucharest that on Sundays close to car traffic big, important boulevards and open them only for pedestrians.

Romania is North of the Balkans, we share history and land in that area, as once it was called Thracia.Romania was called Dacia , and was part of Thracia.

We actually eat polenta almost everywhere in Romania, it’s just that everyone cooks it in different ways. We eat polenta in stead of bread, depending on the meal.

Why Romania is separate from the other Romance languages: the region was heavily colonized by the Roman Empire, while the local population (which already spoke latin, for the same reason most of the people today speak English as a second language) integrated very quickly into the roman culture and became citizens. All the areas surrounding that territory were also latin. During the Slavic migration in the 6-7th centuries, they mainly stuck to the plains (historically, migratory tribes almost never try to settle into hills or mountains). The latin population, along with the proto-balkanic population managed to survive the migration waves by retreating into hills and mountains. That's why Albania, Greece and Romania (all non-slavic) managed to survive and even trive, and also why their countries are very mountainous. Other eastern latins survived as well up to modern times, like Megleno-Romanians, Aromanians, Istroromanians (virtually extinct) and Dalmatians (extinct since the 19th century). The reason Romania and romanian (or, linguistically, daco-romance, named after the former Roman province of Dacia) managed to maintain a sizeable population and a cohesive language and culture is because the Carpathians form a ring, which the slavs managed to conquer relatively late and in few numbers, not enough to assimilate the local latin population. Linguistic analysis show the different Romanian accents diverged from central Transylvania. Edit: Forgot to mention. Yes, there were medieval Genoese and Venetian colonies in Romania, specifically the modern cities of Corabia, Turnu Magurele, and Giurgiu (which kept it's medieval italian name, San Giorgio). We don't really know how much they influenced the region linguistically and genetically. A fun note is that whenever the Polish wrote about the region, they didn't fully distinguish between italians and romanians. They usually called italians "catholic vlachs" and romanians "orthodox vlachs".
