To be honest this wasn't the best video you could have watched, it had quite a few errors. For wading through water, petrol engines need to keep the electrical system dry, both petrol and diesel need fresh air, without water in it, but most older diesel engines will actually run under water if the air intake is high enough

You have to keep the carburettor from the water. They produce a "Snorkle" for extreme off road adventure which routes up the windscreen pillar to the roof.

The people at Rover, which had existed many years before the war, used one of their personal Jeep vehicles as the inspiration to design the Land Rover. This Jeep had been modified using Rover parts.

The grill allows airflow to the radiator directly behind it, the radiator cools the engine, the grill also protects the radiator, the air intake is the important part to keep the water out of, yes some Land Rovers have extension pipes added to the air intakes to allow deeper fording,(as seen @20:31 on the right hand side of the windscreen white one) the design was not luxurious and soft like ladies of the time, not radiator that's the air filter, Range Rover is now the most stolen vehicle in the UK and prices of second hand rovers is crashing due to really high insurance

The first Land Rover was based on an American Jeep chassis and Rover mechanicals. The River company was first founded in 1885 as a bicycle manufacturer when Joseph Starley effectively designed the modern style of Bicycle, the 'Rover Safety Bicycle'. Later they branched into motorcycles and then cars, their first production car being introduced in 1904 (the Ford model A was launched in 1903). They were based in the English Midlands city of Coventry, which was the equivalent of Detroit in the US. The city was badly bombed during WW2, including vehicle makers. The grille on a car is to protect the radiator which contains most of the cooling water, the front has to be open to allow the air to flow through the radiator. A submarine exhaust pipe which was vertical could be fitters for water. The Cylinders are completely sealed, otherwise they could not operate. A gas turbine is a completely different type of engine compared with the normal petrol or diesel engine. 4WD is expensive to build, mechanically more complex, uses more fuel and has no advantage over 2WD on normal roads.

I bought my first Land Rover in 1959 - it was a 1952 Series One model that had been used like an uncared for animal in a slate quarry and needed a lot of TLC. It was easy and inexpensive to renovate and was a terrific driver. In Lo-Lo gear It'd go up any gradient I dared point it at, and the S1 had the fold down flat windscreen that lay on the bonnet and was fantastic on a hot day on the seashores of Northeast England, a lot of them were far from flat and boring. Back then everything was cheap and that Series One got a lot of everyday use. I only sold it when I had to move years later to another job, and it was still in 95% condition. I had more fun in that S1 than I had in a very civilised Range Rover bought a few years later. BTW I always found Rover dealers to be great people - always honest, helpful and very friendly.

Re why aren't all cars 4 wheel drive? It is cheaper to make 2 wheel drive. Cars are more controllable at speed using rear wheel drive. Cars normally have better fuel economy when 2 wheel drive. Front wheel drive means you are less likely to have steering slip, but when it happen it is much more difficult to control. I think 4 wheel drive is normally heavier, and requires more power than 2 wheel drive. Most Land Rovers have the ability to change from 4 wheel to 2 wheel drive, they also have a limited slip differential, allows you to power one of the wheel when another is in the air or getting no traction.

The carburettor is a device attached to the engine which mixes the petrol from the fuel tank and air from the outside. This mixture then goes into the piston. The carburettor has a valve on the air intake attached to the accelerator. When you push down on the accelerator it opens the valve allowing more air into the carburettor thus giving more of an explosive mixture. If the carburettor air intake allows water in it is allowing water into the engine thus killing the engine. You can get round this by attaching a long pipe, a "snorkel", to the air intake. Thus the air coming into the carburettor would be way above the level of any water. The only other thing that would need to be protected from any water would be the electrics. Most military vehicles have their electrics in waterproof sheaths.

This is not a well written or explained video . the narrator calls early LandRovers jeeps: Rover ( or LandRover once seperated from Rover ) have never made Jeeps, though their design was inspired by it. I'll never understand why they would have someone narrating a story about cars that can't pronounce Leyland properly. it's like it's written and narrated by crap A.I. right at the end one of the video clips ( the little red one ) was actually of a Jeep not a landrover at all.

10:30 the place that the air goes in, the intake + air filter which is usually around the same level as the top of the front tyre, give or take a few inches... if water gets to the combustion chambers, and you're lucky enough that no internal parts exited the building, your engine will lockup ("hydrolock"). This will require complete disassembly of the engine to get everything dry and check nothing is bent or cracked. The big snorkel intake's you see on off-roaders that go up to the roof are designed for this in mind.

Land Rovers are still designed and engineered in the U.K. but it is now no longer a British brand/manufacturer after TATA acquired it. And when that happened Land Rover decided to mothball the traditional Land Rover Defender, big mistake which was a favourite of British farmers who used it as a reliable workhorse. What I liked about the original Defender it was like a 4x4 made from fabricated sheet metal which reminded me of Meccano and Dinky model cars from my childhood. So, british entrepreneur, Sir Jim Ratcliffe decided to startup a company called INEOS and build a British heir to Land Rover Defender in France but was originally going to manufacture it in the U.K. until the uncertainty from Brexit increased costs of manufacturing The INEOS Grenadier 4X4 in the U.K. because the EU decided to add extra tariffs to import components from Germany that put an end to that idea. What I can’t understand is, Britain is highly innovative when it comes to designing and engineering some of the worlds best cars, including racing cars like formula 1 but we own nothing because apart from a few cottage industries here and there, like Morgan, all of our iconic manufacturers are foreign owned.

Yes, as well as in the two UK factories the Land Rover brands are now also built in factories in India, China, Brazil and Slovakia.

My first car after I passed my test at 17, was a 1973 lightweight Land Rover. Absolutely loved it, less so putting petrol in it! It was slimmer and boxier than the normal Land Rover so it could be loaded easier onto military aircraft. And lighter for chucking it out the back on a parachute

After WWII there were plenty of surplus Jeeps to go around, but because it's a wartime vehicle there's certain things about it that don't make it great for long term maintenance, it does the job, but it's not quite ideal for farmers long term despite certain features that make it good. Making a utility vehicle that does the same job but with more space and even better performance was a great idea.

Love how they didn't talk about the Defender once, arguably the most famous label of Land Rover They were pretty much the continuation of the classic Land Rovers and were utilitarian as you could get and were produced up until about 2015 I'm pretty sure Then they revived the label with a much more modern design (gotta push that luxury aspect) but kept the boxiness that they are known for

Yeah didn't mention the defender but harped on about the Freelander possibly one of the worst land rovers ever produced along with the MK2 Discovery and it's self destructing transfer cases

My grandfather used to manage a boatyard (incidentally on Anglesey where the designer was from) and had one of the earlier versions, my dad learned to drive in it. Not around anymore of course cause the salt water turned the frame into Swiss cheese, but I've always thought they were cool.

You are probably looking at the windscreen washer tank under the bonnet (hood), rather than a fuel tank. The fuel tank in a Land Rover is in the rear.

Like all water cooled motors a radiator is required for engine cooling, an opening at the front of the body is the most effective way of achieving that.

If i'm not mistaken the image shown at 03:05 is the very first one to roll of the production line. It was found on a farm after being parked in a barn for about 50 years. It was restored to moving under its own power, while replacing the minimum parts necessary to get it running. Which it why it looks... as good as it does in that image!

The air intake needs to be above the waterline. If water gets into the engine, because its none compressible, it'll hydro lock the engine and your get bent rods and an engine can lock up. A snorkel is just a pipe that lifts the intake above the water.

4 wheel drive was mainly required for other than city roads, more suited to dirt roads and tracks originally

Several parts need to keep dry. the electrical ignition can be isolated against water. The crital part that still remains after all tecnical tricks ist the air intake. If water mixes with fuel the change from liquid fuel to burnable gases doesn't work, the engine will stall. If water gets into the engine proper, it can quickly mess up the layer of oil that greases the moving parts in the engine and can cause a total loss of the engine. Therefore offroad vehicles are often fitted with a snorkel that top out at the front of the a-pillar.

I am only guessing that the grill would protect the radiator, as a cracked or smashed radiator from large stones or objects would not be good for continued driving.

Yes, we have soccer mums equivalent! - they use land rovers or "landys" - catherine tate often uses these in her sketches. Typical areas in London where u find these are Highgate and chelsea - affluent areas!

1 - The Land Rover was inspired by the Jeep-Willis, so, Jeep came first, Rover after. 2 - The grill is to protect the radiator in the front, that needs to be cooled by the outside air, and thus low the temperature of the water (water/ glicol mixture) that circulates in proper canals inside the engine, to prevent it from over heating. 3 - The only part that absolutely cannot be under water is the air intake, that feeds the carburetor (on older gasoline engines) or the fuel injection system of diesel and modern gasoline cars. So an extender pipe is fitted from the air filter box to the roof height. (Electrical components such as fuse boxes and bobines usually don't get along with water or humidity as well, but they are usually insulated, and it is not catastrophical for the engine). 4 - Gas turbine is not the norm in automobiles. Piston driven engines are. 5 - 4 wheel drive is good for bad terrain but is heavier, thus less fuel efficient, has more moving parts that wear and tear and cause friction, are more stressful on the engine, have a worse turning radius, and over all less efficient on good everyday roads. So it costs more compared to 2 wheel drive.

I'll try and answer some of the questions: Why 2wd vs 4wd? Cost and weight for the extra materials - extra transmission and driveshafts. Permanent 4wd vehicles don't work on paved roads - because when cornering the inside and outside wheels travel different distances and so rotate at different speeds, having all the wheels turn at the same speed places massive stress on the driveline - Having a differential that allows wheels to rotate at different speeds solves this for road cars, for 4wd you need differentials front and rear and one in the middle to allow front and rear wheels to rotate at different speeds, which then defeats the point of having 4wd - to make all the wheels turn at the same speed to maximise grip - to fix this you either need to limited slip differentials and/or a mechanism to disengage two of the wheels - more weight, materials, cost Interior design - 4wd need to have a driveshaft to both ends of the vehicle so you have to have a bit lump in the floor, extra gear levers etc, Running costs are higher both in fuel consumption and repairs - there's more mechanical stuff to go wring Engine wetness? Anything electrical - obviously Air intakes and filters - Water is not compressible and if it gets into the cylinders the force of the pistons slamming into a rigid substance will just destroy the engine. fans and radiators - The fan is designed to push air through the radiator, and the radiator fins are designed to work with a constant flow of air and water is far to dense and viscous for the fan to move it through the radiator quickly enough, add in the waters probably filthy and will clog the radiator fins, resulting in overheating. Lubricants - including in differentials, gearboxes etc which have vents to allow for thermal expansion. mixing water with most lubricants makes them break down and stop working properly. Moving parts, belts, cables - anything that is unlikely to appreciate being churned around in filthy water or have gravel and mud stuck in it.

Many of my family have and some still do work for Land Rover/Jaguar....and yes Connor after the war many farmers were using horse drawn equipment, shortages of metal, factory workers and fuel, but we managed not having steel (used for the war effort) and they used aluminium for the Land Rover... mighty glad they did.. Great video and reaction on to the next now.

Some more recent American musicians and this video refer to their Land or Range Rover as simply Rovers, completely ignoring the original Rover car company which was founded over 100 years ago (highly recommend doing a research video on them). I am the proud owner of a 1999 Rover 800 (got a couple of short videos on my channel) and will be going to a car show at the British motor museum tomorrow

I think some of your confusion here is that you're not aware that "jeep" is a generic term for general purpose military vehicles and not just a brand name. Several companies including Ford and Willys made jeeps.

You're partly right and partly wrong. Jeep is not generic for general purpose military vehicles. It actually was a brand name but that brand (for the war effort) was built by several different manufacturers with almost identical interchangeable parts. The Jeep is not a general, but specific vehicle.

What a shame to argue on here without just checking Google. The origins of Jeep from 'GP' didn't mean "General Purpose." The "G" signified a Ford government contract vehicle and "P" indicating the 80-inch wheelbase. Happy to help.

We have a 2006 Range Rover Sport. Luckily my husband loves working on cars as it would have cost a fortune taking it to a garage to be fixed. 😂

Don't think soccer mums existed in the UK, if they did they probably used a Multi Purpose Vehicle. Land/range rovers would've been used by farmers or the financially well off.

The original design if the jeep was by Bantam. They produced a version of the British Austin Seven. Unfortunately they couldn't produce enough jeeps and so Willis and Ford took over the production adaption of the jeep.

@@patiencerose ... Generally it's just Leyland Motors, British Leyland was more for the entire group (Trucks, vans, buses and cars). Today in 2024 Leyland is known simply as Leyland Trucks. There is also an Indian Leyland company known as Ashok Leyland which was founded in 1948 as Ashok motors but became Ashok Leyland in 1955 after collaboration with British Leyland.

The critical part of an engine that has to avoid water is the air intake, thats why some off road vehicles have a snorkle that give an air input as high as the roof. The elctrical system has to be protected againt water as well, but is easier to achieve. My first car had a transverse engine, so the spark plugs were next to the radiator, every time there was heavy rain the engine would stop, so a plastic shield was added over that side of the engine.

Water is much less a problem with diesel engines , It is usually getting the electonics wet the parts which provide the spark to ignite the petrol which will stop the car ,, Diesel does not have this system and if the air intake and exhaust is high up ( air in,-exhaust gas out ) a diesel can opperate in water ,,

The grill - covers the hole through which air is moved to provide engine cooling. The grill resists things which are not air, protecting the vulnerable radiator from damage.

The original land rover was a prototype, made from whatever parts were available from rover car parts and the Jeep chassis, only one was ever built, it is known as the centre steer and is pictured in the video @ 6.57. @22.58 behind the battery in the engine bay is the round oil bath air filter, the fuel tank is under the drivers seat. The alloy v8 engine that was introduced was a US design, I think by chrysler. The company LR merged with was Leyland, and is not pronounced 'Leeland' but 'Layland', It's name is derived from the town it came from in Lancashire. the thing thing is a snorkel. I no longer have my Disocoerry 1, but do still have my 1977 88" series three.

Fun fact When they designed the first range rover in maybe the 70s, the design looked totally different to the first range rover that was produced. The critical part to keep dry is where it draws in air. Usually through the air filter box which is usually (and by usually we mean "the average normie car") mounted quite high up. I mean there's electrics etc but they're usually vaguely well protected and even if not it usually isn't fatal or prohibitively expensive to fix. You draw water into the engine itself it is usually terminal via hydrolock - water doesn't compress, on the compression stroke it doesn't compress, and things bend, crack and snap that aren't supposed to bend, crack and snap - usually expensive and/or fundamental things.

Jeep is a generic term for a 4 wheel drive, all purpose vehicle in the UK. We often call a Land Rover a ‘jeep’. Lots of companies make ‘jeeps’ not just the Jeep branded company. Hope this helps 😊
