"The day I killed a thousand Fuzzy Wuzzies". It doesn't mean animals, it means men of the Hadendoa tribe in Sudan, who the British fought in the 1880s.

The "Fuzzy-wuzzies" often gets referred to in the WW2 set comedy series 'Dads Army', where old timer Corporal Jones often talked about his time fighting them in years gone by. And also referring to using his bayonet on them, he would utter his hilarious catchphrase "they do not like it up em sir, they do not like it up em!".

I remember “They don’t like it up em” line from Corporal Jones. No wonder ‘Dad’s Army’ has been cancelled despite it actually being a really funny classic comedy. King Boomer seems to think it means a type of animal though. It’s a old derogatory term for human beings that live in Africa not Fuzzy animals that live In Africa

@@oli3437 Actually, "Fuzzy-Wuzzies" wasn't originally a derogatory term for Africans. It was a nickname for the soldiers of a particular Sudanese warrior tribe, referring to their distinctive head-dress worn in battle and visible at a distance to the opposing army. Not derogatory at all - any more than referring to the "green berets" or "blue bonnets" or "red hackles" or "Mohawks". (I'm not saying your great-uncle Jim didn't use it as a general derogatory term for all Africans, but when Corporal Jones was at war, it was just a nickname for soldiers of one tribe in the Sudan, who happened to be fighting against the British.)

I just love your reactions to these pieces, KB. It cracks me up, like I'm watching them for the first time. Something that you may well enjoy is "Norbert Smith- a life", one of Harry Enfield's early works It's a mockumentary which brilliantly lampoon's the Brit film industry from the 1920s to the 80s. It is on KZread, but not so easy to find, and generally is chopped into sections.

More relevant than the US Bison was the US Passenger Pigeon which in the early 1800s had an estimated population of at least three billion birds, yet, by 1900, none survived in the wild, in fact a special 'shoot' was organised for the last known flock which consisted of around 250,000 birds - all were killed ! The very last one, died in captivity around 1914.

I love his take on the old WWII Ministry of Information film shorts. Bob Danvers Walker was the voice of the time (he can be heard in the Army cinema showing piece in the 1958 film Dunkirk) and Harry has that straight laced voice down to a tee. As to the one American voice at that time, no-one comes close to Quintin Reynolds who decided to stay in London in the Blitz against the wishes of his bosses. His voice is that of the documentary short London Can Take It which can be found in KZread.

We had a sit com here called 'Dad's Army' if you are not familiar its about the Home Guard, during World War II.. it was manned by older men and young boys. Its hilarious. One of the old veterans in that comedy was Corporal Jones, an old soldier from the Sudan war in Africa. He would occasionally go on a stupid rant, lol, and shout 'those Fuzzy Wuzzies, they don;t like it up em, Sir. they don;t like it up em' meaning bayonets. that is how most of us of a certain age in this country are familiar with the granted racist term by todays terms.

The Fuzzie-Wuzzies were Muslim Africans in the Sudan who fought for the Mahdi against the British during the war in Sudan in the 1880s. They grew their hair in wild bushy springs and I think it was Rudyard Kippling who came up with fuzzy-wuzzy. If you want a quick introduction to the Anglo-Sudan war watch the film Four Feathers of which there are at least five versions made since the 1930s, or Gordon of Khartoum starring Charlton Heston.

I think that, like 'Harry and Lulu', these were sketches within the 'Harry Enfield and Chums' series. Real pet alligators?! This conjures up images of feeding time with the family seated inside steel cages, passing 'not-so-cuddly Alistair Alligator' his Christmas turkey at the end of a very long pole. A very Merry Christmas from Oxford, UK! By the way, as you like these 'skits', if you can find it try an episode of a series called 'Ripping Yarns' (old upper-class British slang for excellent [ripping] stories [yarns]), which was written by Michael Palin and Terry Jones of 'Monty Python' fame. The episode in question is a spoof on life in a late 19th century 'public' (i.e., fee-paying) school. It's bizarre yet hysterical.

Merry Xmas King Boomer If I remember properly the one show he did was "Harry Enfield & Chums", but later on he did "Harry & Paul", which they did some "risky" sketches. There's a video called "(The Death of Comedy) HARRY & PAUL" by Bull Brand, it's 30ish minutes long, and full of some of their more "riskier" stuff
