I always thought that Harry's American Tourist characters were actually a comparatively gentle piss-take because they're really quite nice well-meaning people. They just have an ignorance of other cultures and an excess of enthusiasm and bonhomie which is utterly alien to us Brits.

I was walking with my wife on the Northumberland coast 2 days ago and i noticed an elderly gentleman with his wife trying to catch my eye with a broad smile and welcoming posture. I thought he might be slightly demented but when we eventually passed them, he politely expressed what a beautiful coastal path we were on, in, you guessed it, an American accent.

Yes Harry and Paul did great sketches. I worked in a cafe in Edinburgh Scotland about 25 yrs back and and American couple came in. They were about the same age as these, she had a bit of a beehive hair do and he looked exactly like this Harry Enfield character. They were both over the top polite, and as with many of our American cousins their speaking volume was way up to eleven. As they stood at the counter she asked “Excuse me, what is the soup today ?” .I cast my arm behind me at the board and read out to them that it was beetroot. They looked at each other puzzled and asked in unison “What is that ?”. I went to the back kitchen and brought out a beetroot and showed it to them, they looked and shouted in unison “OOHHH ROOTBEAT”. Which I found quite funny. They said they would leave it today and may come back tomorrow. As they were going I said “Yes, tomorrow it might be nipturn”, but I think that was lost on them. The whole thing was hilarious, and what was puzzling is my boss, the owner of the cafe (she was not in that day) who is herself an American, had never heard of `rootbeat` either.

Harry Enfield as Ronald, Alice Lowe as Pam, Paul Whitehouse as the dad and Simon Day as the cafe owner. Paul wrote for Harry initially (for the characters Loadsamoney and Stavros) and then co-starred in Harry's 90s BBC series ("Harry Enfield's Television Programme" and "Harry Enfield & Chums"). Paul then starred in The Fast Show (with Simon Day and others) before re-uniting with Harry for "Harry and Paul" (originally "Ruddy Hell! It's Harry and Paul").

Some years ago I was on holiday in Devon, which is in the 'West Country' part of Britain - it's a beautiful area and hence always popular with tourists. My wife and I went into a nice quiet cafe for afternoon 'cream' tea, which includes scones with jam and clotted cream. Suddenly in came an elderly American couple just like these two - I've never seen two people so excited. They sat down and proceeded to loudly 'gush' about afternoon tea - "Oh my God, I can't believe whe're in Devon, eating REAL DEVONSHIRE CLOTTED CREAM!" said the lady, and so it went on until we left. For me, ever since I first saw these American tourist sketches, it brings back memories of those two.

On the trip there was a North Carolina church group, I think Baptist, and their minister got up first thing and welcomed the non-Americans to the trip, as if they, of course, were the majority nationality. They weren't...there went 15 Yanks, then about 20 Aussies and a few Kiwis. The only Yanks any of us would talk to were those not in the church group, and the rest of us got along fine...even people from Melbourne and Sydney. They were so sickly sweet that I'm surprised the rest of us didn't come down with diabetes.

It is Harry Enfield. He is a comedy genius. So is Paul whitehouse who is a much respected straight actor as well as comedy. It was very funny and you're almost halfway across the pond with your absorbsion of the Brit sense of humour.

There's no such thing as the mob...capiche" 🤣🤣🤣 fucking legend was on a segway too

The Paul With Harry Enfield is the comedian Paul Whitehouse. He had in the 1990's his own show called the Fast Show (so called because each sketch was only about 30 seconds long) Much of the fast show was incredibly funny. Paul Whitehouse has also done some acting for movies including a very good and progressive movie of the Dickens Novel David Copperfield (I always think that there are so many traditional adaptations of Charles Dickens why not play around with it a little and this version was at times slightly surreal and also did that rare but good thing of having Dickens characters played by non white actors)

I always feel that Britain was a little short changed in the stereotype dependent. American's are know for being friendly and kind. Italian's are famous for amazing style and coolness. China, great at maths. India, tech wizards. French, great cooks. The British bad teeth and Bo'Oh'O'Wa'er!

Boomer. We love American folks. You need to understand that the British sense of humour takes the P out of everyone and anything. Including ourselves. It’s all just humour. If you can make folk laugh you have done your job.

Near where I live in South West London are some wonderful gardens called Kew Gardens and next to them is a quite famous tea shop called the Maids of Honour where they still sell cakes that are (allegedly) the same recipe to the ones Henry VIII consumed. During the Summer the place is always full of American and Japanese and Chinese tourists having massive cream teas with cream and jam and scones and toasted tea cakes. They do this because they think it is the traditional British thing to do. Actually the vast majority of British People have never had a traditional British cream tea in their lives. In the same way many people in Britain are more likely to have a Chicken Tikka Masala in their local Indian Restaurant or a take away dominos pizza in front of the soccer for Sunday lunch than they are to sit down as a family at the kitchen table and have roast beef, roast potatoes and Yorkshire Pudding. Chicken Tikka Masala (chicken in a spicey creamy and tomatoey type source) though available in all British Indian restaurants isn't strictly speaking even an Indian Dish. It was a dish that was concocted by chefs for the English palate. However you can now even get it in India. Presumably so that a British tourist there can have their dish of chicken Tikka Masala and Pilau Rice as they watch the Taj Mahal fade into the sunset. As a true Brit though I think the bottom line with food is not its cultural integrity but how tasty it actually is (and whether they give you a big enough portion)
