The difference is that clubs in europe are community institutions, sometimes 130 year old, clubs, though not the basketball teams, but the clubs them selfs, in one place, one city, built into the community. While in America the teams are a franchise, that can up and leave any time, not invested in the local community, not a part of the culture of a city beyond where there is profit to be made.

Look for Section 13 Panathinaikos fans in Greece. I lived a few blocks way from their old stadium in Athens. I'd walk out the door in the evening and knew there was a home game: the smell of tear gas in the air. Obscene chants were the least of it. There was a great interview couple of years back that a SI reporter wrote up - he was interviewing international NBA rookies and asking them if they were intimidated by playing in the LA Forum or the Boston Garden. Their replies were basically "Are you kidding me?" They old stories about buses needing armed escorts to get into the venues, D cell batteries hitting the hardcover roof of their team benches, not being able to hear their coaches yelling out the game plan before the game in their locker rooms.

I'm 100% sure the atmosphere in a college basketball game is a million times better than a NBA game. College basketball teams, like european basketball teams, have history and have always been tied to the one university they are from. This cultivates a much more loyal fanbase. NBA teams can up and leave if they feel like it, can't create any deep bonds or history with your club.

Great reaction and yes, its a lot about culture. I'm from small european country in the middle of europe, and even tho we dont have great ultras like balkans/germans do, our football games still go on. The time flies when you there.. I was two weeks back and the signing and banter between fan groups was insane, but its mostly one group that tries to pump up the rest. For example.. if we do some choreo, it starts on one tribune where almost everyone is on it and signs it like 3 to 4 times as a "whole stadium..." and what we want them to do.. if its to sign, put your arms up, jump, hold shoulder to shoulder etc. Its great fun and 2 hours game feels like 20 minutes. And yes.. this goes on for the whole game..they may be few minutes where its calm, but its mostly the pauses between songs, chants, choreos, and stuff. Also.. when it comes to football, at least our club is on it with huge banners that cover whole tribune for example.. its crazy that we cant se shit for several minutes and still jump and sign undeneath a huge banner. Great experience.. if you ever will be in europe, I would recommend you to visit several games. Just be safe. Im going with ultras cause I wanna hear them, do the dances and so on..but if you wanna to just enjoy the show, most of the stadiums do have a family section where they mostly respect it if you dont join in or sit down for the whole game.. but they may still chant something towards you if its a lot of people siting down. Btw.. when I bought my last tickets for my gf, the note from the seller was "Its not right in the club zone, so.. its close but you may be allowed to sit down" Something like it. Beautiful.

I am from Greece. I remember first time I watched NBA games on TV. Imagine how astonished I was, when I heard the fans "defense - defense - "!! I thought, wow this is some elite basketball fandom! (The songs of our fans about the opponent are mostly riddled with adult (dirty) language) 🙂

Europe fans really support the team they are with .. They not only go to matches but are often involved in several ways. And in the US, people are afraid of being sued .. That does not happen in Europe. 😀 Greetings from Europe.

Alot of the stuff that is seen as mundane in europe would get you ejected from the stands in the us no cap. Reminds me of when Jokic was asked aboit the playoffs crowd in the NBA and if he was nervous, and all he could say was "I played in Serbia brother" Fyi the red team fans jumping like crazy that is the belgrade partizans a serbian team. Serbian/balkan fans on general are known to be extra wild by european standards, by american standards it must seem like the forshadowing of the apocolypse.

Red Star Belgrade, not Partizan. Red Star colours are red and white vertical stripes, and the team is known as 'red-whites'. Partizan's colours are black and white vertical stripes, and their teams are known as 'black-whites'. Making this kind of error can get you in a life threatening situation here in Serbia.

A fan in Greece died today before the match Aek vs Dinamo Zagreb from stab wounds and game was never played. Many injured with life threatning injuries and many hiding still from police in a country 1000km from home. My son wants me to take him to this game when Dinamo plays home game against AEK. Somehow Im not too sure about Greek fans not retaliating.

There are a few things that I think make huge differences (I'm Italian-Canadian so I've seen both cultures) 1. Europeans are more emotional or it is acceptable to be more emotional, loud, and passionate. North America tends to have a more "stoic" approach. 2. European countries and cities have rivalries that go back hundreds, if not thousands of years. Literally went to war with each other and they've taken it from war to sports. People will die for their team. 3. In North America, there will be people that change teams and bandwagon where as in European countries l, that doesn't really happen because of long lineages to a team/area. 4. Tickets for sporting events in North America cost a lot more, so it really changes the crowds that are there. Corporate elite versus everyone else lol. As a history nerd, there's so many aspects to this that would make a really interesting paper 🤓

That’s the big difference: in the states it’s a show-that’s why „fans“ dress up! We go there to watch a game!!! When I go to my stadium I wear the oldest shoes and Trikots of my team, cause I know i will sweat and maybe be covered up by beer ⚽️🍻🤘and for sure after a game I have lost my voice!

"They actin' like they fight outside the arena" ... well... about that.... you'd never guess what (In high school I had this classmate who used to wear merch for one of the two biggest teams in our city (that have a huge feud) and on two different occasions he got jumped on by guys who were fans of the other team and got beat up, he came to school with like two black eyes and a busted lip the one time)

When American journalists ask to young Luka, Jokic or any other European player that played in Euroleague if they are ready to manage the big pressure in US Arenas, they stay polite but they laugh inside. Man, once you've played at high level in Greece, Turkey, Serbia, Russia, etc. every other place is a joke in terms of fan pressure and expectations.

Americans only have Civil War where they fighting each other. Europeans were fighting among themselves for 2 millennia. So there's the difference why they're so crazy. Same thing about sport. For Americans, it's sporting event. For Europeans (maybe the rest of the world as well), it's a war. You know what I mean?
