Not sure if this is a sample or not. I've heard it both ways from people. Those words are sung in the song Bottom of the Sea by Dhruva Aliman kzread.info/dash/bejne/a4Odusyan7yWk6Q.html but it doesn't sound exactly the same.

Ren can definitely crochet. He can probably fly a plane. Probably delivered himself at birth. Ren is the new Chuck Norris. Except we can actually see proof of him doing everything.

I definitely feel that one! Humble is my favorite, even though it's difficult to pick a favorite from Ren, he got so much amazing music to choose from 😃

Ren said his favorite rapper is actually Zach De la Rocha, the lead singer of Rage Against the Machine. He also said Lauryn Hill, Method man and Red man, Busta Rhymes, Cyprus Hill, and then Eminem are his favorite and most influential rappers. He said overall though, his biggest musical influence is John Fruschiante, the guitarist of Red Hot Chili Peppers. He even primarily plays a copy of Fruschiante's Japanese Fender Telecaster guitar.

It sounds like a 1930’s spiritual song. REN’s amazing!

Hey if you haven't seen his interview with Justin Hawkins, it's a really great look at who he is as an artist and as a person. Really great interview Edit: think I spotted you've already seen it

I love how he references, homages, and nods to so many greats. REN’s music is so easy to listen to and so hard to wrap your head around. His layers got layers.

I don't know if you guys have seen his dad's videos at all. But it seems like his dad plays the old school mandolin or lute in like Celtic fashion. The sort of thing you might hear at a renaissance fair. Which kind of explains a lot too.

Just off the top of my head in this moment, I know he has referenced in his lyrics: Jimi Hendrix, Eminem, Plan B, Nat King Cole, John Frusciante (Red Hot Chilli Peppers), Sid and Nancy (Sex Pistols), Stevie Wonder, Django Reinhardt, Frank Sinatra, Leonard Cohen, Destiny’s Child, Kurt Cobain and Nirvana, Cypress Hill, Rage Against the Machine, DMX, Five (5ive), Rihanna, Geri Halliwell and the Spice Girls, Calvin Harris, Beastie Boys, Ice Cube, New Kids on the Block, Manu Chao, Drake, Shaggy, Sean Paul, and many more that I’m sure I’ve missed or don’t come to mind right now. And this doesn’t take into account the artists he’s used as a backdrop for his Rep Retakes (The Verve, Fat Boy Slim, Fisher, Foo Fighters, SBTRKT), it doesn’t count the artists and songs he’s covered either solo or as part of a group (duets or The Big Push), artists that he has collaborated with (who are clearly inspirations to him in their own right), or artists that he’s expressly mentioned in interviews or writing as being inspirations to him. Great list, especially "off the top of your head". There's a beautiful wordpress article he has written (where he writes about homeless people and him trying out being homeless for a day to experience a taste of what it's like to feel shunned and invisible) called "Heart is Where the Home is" and in it he says he loves the The Police

Eden Nash is fantastic. I love Ocean and Humble.

Personally my favorite ren song is power. It has a little bit of his backstop in the lyrics, it has very motivational lyrics and its extremely upbeat. I've heard power is such a vibe and its so true.

'Ocean' goes down in the last part as a gospel, or almost like a gospel, and sometimes it was like a cotton field slaves' song (solo plus choir). Or I am just imagining things.

Ren and Bibi were dating when he wrote and produced 'Crutch' ft Bibi. This video is tragically beautiful. It's pure artistry 👌. The chemistry is real and that makes it even more intense ❤ ❤

I won’t lie, my first time hearing Ocean and even though I’ve heard dozens of his songs probably I still can’t believe he spits like that over and over. And the crazy cadences. How many songs is his speed as fast as all but a couple in the world? Whewww I can’t take it I can’t get enough ren!

Humble is my favorite. Put on on in the morning and gets me up for the day. Then keep playing it whenever the feeling hits me.

Ren is a fine wine, a cool breeze, a sunny day. Artist extreme.

These 2 songs are back to back in my daily playlist, along with their cover of Bongo Bong. They're absolutely fantastic, I love just about everything Ren (I admit to not having Depression and Insomnia in the playlist, but I think every other song lol) and Eden Nash's voice is amazing.

Ren also adores the Chili's and references John Frusciante in Power.

In the UK we have so much reggae 'raggae' ragga/dub influenced stuff, but rarely do American reactors react to reggae, so much good stuff out there. It is a music I can't live without, like you said sometimes you just need those tunes that are a slice of sunshine. Thanks for your pod, I've grown to really enjoy you guys.

The moment he goes into that double speed chop and you guys are just bouncing along .. *FULL STOP* look at each other like 'wtf just happened'? I think Don really kind of put it into perspective, its not just that Ren listens to a lot of different styles, and creates music in those styles, but he integrates each of the individual pieces into his personal style which expands his ability to mix and match beyond artists who focus on a singular style to the deficit of others. He is, as he says, an alchemist, he takes the pieces he wants/needs from any given style and mixes them together to produce something magical. I'm with ya BP .. Humble just hits that sweet spot for me (and clearly you as well heh) - I think its the pure Young Punk/Rude Boy sound ... I feel like I'm listening late 70's Police rebuilt for today (Calling you BP isn't going to work for me for .. what might be obvious reasons, I feel like I'm talking to myself, so I'm gonna start calling you Pegs *snicker*) WHOAH! Don referenced Skanking Pickle! ... Next he's gonna break out with some Pie Tasters or (one of my favorites) Mephiskapheles!

ReN grew up in a musical household. I remember one of his parents was a music teacher...so he's been practicing his craft since he could walk. It seems obvious to me that Ren is a fan of almost every genre of musical style and likes to incorporate and fuse them wherever it seems possible...which is great!!

Missed the premier, but watching back now. These two tracks are 🔥🔥🔥 - Eden’s vocals work so well on both songs. Ren has such a talent (along with all his other talents) for finding great unknown artists to work with. So looking forward to the BP/Ren interview - it’s gonna be wild I’m sure

Most definitely Ren singing the Hook. He may have borrowed the words and melody, but it’s not a sample. Once you get over the fact that he’s killing it yet again showing another level to his talent, you can tell it’s him pretty easily. Your brain is resisting cause it’s so good any different.

Side note: I'm a fairly new subscriber here but I got to say for the last month I really enjoyed listening to you guys, since we grow up in the same time period I really feel like I can follow along with the stories❤ this is so much fun😊

Humble is my fave but I’d really love to see you react to Do You Believe - the sample in it is Melanie Safkas from 1972 and she was one of only 3 female solo artists to play at Woodstock - she is an incredible folk singer with such an amazing pure voice.

It is a deep dive into your mind.

Also, Eden hasn't released any new material in the last 3 years but a recent reply from her on her youtube chanel states she'll be dropping some new tracks in the near future. She has some very "Toni Braxton" tones in some of her work.

It reminds me of the Moby “Play” album where he sampled loads of blue grass, old soul and gospel songs and created some amazing new tracks. But fo sure, Ren is a genius and is able to blend into so many styles and genres whilst also creating his own lane. You really need to dive more into The Big Push's original stuff before you get to The Ren Interview. The group has been a big part of his life too. Well done! I discovered you through Ren. Another rabbit warren I'm lost in is Billy Strings. An Aussie warren you might enjoy is our voice, John Farnham, he is a chameleon also. I'd suggest Help with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra to begin with. He has given us over 50 years of music, but has recently been through jaw reconstruction as part of cancer treatment. In his last Twitch stream, Ren mentioned Zac de la Rocha, Method Man, Lauryn Hill, Eminem, Kendrick, Busta Rhymes, Mos Def and KRS 1 as some of his top favourites. When prompted he also said he likes several other rappers like NF, Hopsin, Tech N9ne, Dizzie Rascal and then he went on to mention some UK rappers like Stormzy. It’s obvious his main influences are American rather than British and that he vibes more with old school 90s rap, while still liking and appreciating more modern rap. He really praised Lauryn and played some of her live music for the people in the stream ❤
