Historically, Most people talk about and remember him only for his miserably terrible presidency but this legacy was an even sadder tragedy.. Having had to watch his LAST and only surviving Son nearly hideously Decapitated and killed right before his eyes (and his wife's) in a horrific train crash just weeks before assuming the presidency is just NOT imaginable. That -TRAIN WRECK- became an identical referendum on Him, the First Lady and his whole administration.

Doesn't matter....Pierce was a lifelong racist and lifelong incompetent. Not owning slaves won't save him; his after-life Judgement Day still earned him a spot in Hell for using his power and authority to promote widespread human abuse, captivity, and murder. As dumb as he was, he knew he had no chance when he was drinking himself to death. Might as well.

Sargent Shriver, who voices Pierce here, was born in Maryland, educated in New England, and spent much of his career in Chicago and Washington DC. And being from the North that would make him persona non grata whether his family was intact or not. He was destined for one term as a result. What I find more remarkable was that a he was the darkest of dark horses; how a party can nominate an empty suit who wasn't even running is beyond comprehension.

Doug most people back then had little regard for African americans sadly! Lincoln however evolved!) If u read lincoln early he thinks whites and blacks are incapable of being socially equal! Right before he passed hed come to know fredrick Douglass and Cassius clay[Muhammed alis ancestor) and renounced his former appraisal of black people! He admitted hed become an abolitionist!slowly over time of course!

Also linciln started out believung that whites and blacjs ciukd and would never be social equals! However his friendshios with fredricj douglas and other black leaders of his time changed his perspective on whether blacks and whites should or could be social equals$ so give the man credit where it is due$ what u quoted was true! It was lincilns response to critics beandung him an abolitiinist before he took office and when he wanted to manipulate the public to join his cause and rhat was perservung the union!

I'm distantly related to this man. I think hes unfairly blamed for not controlling events leading to the civil war! Think Polk a southern sympathizer was more responsible for the countries descent into civil war! His story reminds me of grant! Family lore says he wasnt a battle coward! His ascendancy into the presidency is eerily reminiscent of trump?Lincoln faced the loss of his son on his own too! The difference being PTSD! Pierce support of the south was a bad idea! But it should be reiterated that he wasnt the worst president who publicly supported the south!
