AMERICAN POLICE MUSCLE ON TRACK | Driving Secrets Pt. 2 - Ford Explorer

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Last time in the 'Police Pursuit Driving Secrets' mini-series, I tackled Blyton Park Circuit in the British forces' weapon of choice: the faithful BMW 530d (watch this video here: • EX-STIG TESTS POLICE C... )
In this episode, Police Interceptor @BenPearson1965 throws me the keys to The Land of Opportunity's answer to car chases: the slab of V6 Americana known as the Ford Explorer.
It was incredibly interesting to feel the vast dynamic differences that both vehicles offered when I picked up the pace; clearly geared up for hugely varying road networks and reflecting on each country's differing approaches to on-road policing.
Massive thanks again to Ben for sharing his vast wealth of fascinating police driver knowledge - it's always great to hear tactics about pushing cars to the limit from the Five-O's perspective and something any self-respecting driver can gain an abundance of hints and tips from.

I find it both ironic and comedic that they both liked the Explorer best. Being in the states, and one that sees snow half the year, it's easy to see why most departments went the Explorer route, more space inside, easier to get in and out, all wheel drive, some ground clearance, but not abysmal handling. Pretty sure one can get the top dog ecoboost engines in interceptor trims, so that old gen would've been the 3.5 eb, 365 hp. Now the 3.0 with 400 hp... no slouch.

Here in Hawai’i the police get subsidized patrol vehicles and most of them choose the 4Runner. I have seen some Explorer ST’s as patrol vehicles. The Honolulu Police have transitioned to the Interceptor SUV as marked patrols since Ford doesn’t make sedans anymore.

The 3.3L HEV V6 in the Ford Police Interceptor Utility they offer now is becoming more common as an engine package for most Dept's that run them. Better fuel economy than the 3.0 EcoBoost and only slightly less power.

There arent that many fast american cop cars, since us as the general public dont generally drive such cars. Most State Troopers (who patrol our motorways) drive Dodge Chargers. Lots of grunt, but no breaks after the first heavy braking. LEOs here are trained to hit fast and hit hard as soon as its safe - bring the pursuit to an end. It's why they ALL have bull bars. That said, since they arent illegal, lots of citizens (including me) have bull bars too for wildlife. I drive an F150, and its survived multiple deer strikes because of the bullbars,

Nice comparison to be fair. Over here in Ireland the majority of our Police (Gardai) cars in the last few years have been Hyundai i40 estates for patrol cars and then the ARU (Armed Support Units) have gone with the 530ds but also Audi Q7s, I'm not sure if it's financial or based on performance but I'd be interested to see what the Q7 is like. Before I think we followed the UK with having the Volvos for the elite units and I always wondered why we moved away from the old reliable but was probably down to how Volvo made the switch to focus on hybrids and electric! Nice vids all the same and also pretty cool to have a cop who has driven them on duty to be able to give that extra point of view rather than just a drivability test!

Worst thing you want to see behind you in America is a blacked out Explorer or a blacked out Charger. It's probably the State Troopers. Then you know you're screwed. It's harder to recognize the headlights on the new Explorer, I can spot the Dodge Charger headlights a little better. In Connecticut, I saw an unmarked Kia Stinger driven by the State Police. You also have to worry about unmarked Ford F-150 pick up trucks. Saw a black one last week pulling someone over a cargo truck. In Florida, they even have Ford Mustangs as pursuit cars. Arkansas State Troopers use 150mph, oppose to 130mph Dodge Charger pursuit. They're a lot of ASP police chases on YT. PIT at 120mph, no problem for ASP. I sub to a lot of them.

Knew there would be Police waiting outside and slowed to legal speed but misjudged the state boundary. Explorer, caught up.with me on the freeway. He caught me for 89mph earlier, criminal speeding in AZ. Was very lucky he let me go and I behaved for the rest of my time in the state.

American pursuits are far more likely to be facing a driver (& passengers) who are armed and more willing to resist with violence than the British scenario. As mentioned the streets and typical venues of an American chase are wider and less constrained than the ones described in England. The Pitt maneuver is used as much to stun the perpetrator as it is to end the chase. Obviously this does not always work out this way but if the chased vehicle is Pitt maneuvered into a median they are going to be far less able to run or fight than someone who was boxed in and contained as they do in England.

Used to regularly get chased by these when I lived in Vero Beach, Florida. I lived in low income housing and the Police would lie in waiting on the approach roads. Coming back home from the flying school where I worked the lights would.appear out of nowhere and I'd pull my Dodge Neon, over to the petrol station, hands on the wheel. They'd take one look at me and let me go; not the demograph they were looking for. PS Anyone ever read Bob Bondurant on Police Driving? Great book by an ex F1 podium finisher who taught performance driving.

Trust me, they are every bit as bad as you'd expect. Approaching it with a mindset of a 90s American SUV expectation, sure, it's great. But it's horrific. The Charger kicks it's ass handling, braking, and acceleration/top speed and that's REALLY not saying much. A lot of the guys here don't particularly enjoy the Exploders...especially if someone is running. It tops out somewhere around 130 and it takes a WHILE to get there. Like my daily beater 2012 4 cylinder Camry kinda while. Over here in the states we'd be much better off with proper sport wagons. Damn near the same capacity for tools, firearm safes, supplies, gear, etc...way less fuel, way better performance, and a hell of a lot sleeker than a Janice kid hauler. The last point is completely vain but still.

As the owner of a 2014 Police Interceptor Utility, one of the most important items to consider is the fact it is not an Explorer. It is its own model of vehicle due to the extreme number of modifications. With a few minor adjustments you can get almost 400 bhp out of the 3.7l engine, and the 3.5l twin turbos does fit as the 3.7l has the same block and head as the 3.5l. in the video it appeared the vehicle was not in "pursuit mode" too, which makes a large difference in the performance and handling of the vehicle.

  • @supra1jzed

    @supra1jzed

    2 ай бұрын

The only "pursuit mode" in those vehicles, it in fact is in, automatically. After periods of full throttle and heavy braking it will automatically switch. It's ONLY for the transmission shift points. It'll stop trying to upshift for fuel economy and will hold the lowest gear possible for the speed. Said mode does absolutely nothing with the "dumb" suspension, brakes, or power. Just what the transmission does. That very feature is in all police cruisers from Tahoes to Chargers to the weird failure of a Caprice thing. The shifting it's doing isn't Collins, that's the pursuit mode. Other than that, we just have run of the mill shocks, slightly stiffer springs, and it's an absolute dog.

No, Explorer on it's best day against the likes of a super base model X3 and the Vic to the likes of a...well....Europeans don't really have anything that massive, slow, and boat like. It'd be more like a old 70's Rolls. It's a damn 4.6L V8 that only makes a pathetically low 220-240hp. It's mated to a fucking 4 speed with REALLY tall gearing LOL. The X5 could work if it had super base model tire size and it's suspension was about halfway blown out against a Explorer. Even just the 3.0L N/A with the transmission it gets would make it very very quick in comparison though. The brakes would be in a very different league of their own, too.

I have a long family history in the police, and always fancied being a traffic officer because I've always been in to cars... then when I was 16 and 17 I had my identical twin nearly die in a car accident, and a close work friend die, with a few others injured in another car accident - and I gave up on it because I knew I'd have to see that on the regular. The things these people see and go through to try and protect us all... it's madness and they're mega unappreciated.
