What could possibly go wrong? Jimmy Broadbent takes me around Donington in his 450BHP Toyota Supra

In the 90's I did something very stupid. I was listening to the Beastie Boys (which makes it their fault) while driving my Toyota Supra Japanese import down a country road. It was an awesome ride - all black, big whale tale, loads of power and massive tyres - with NO ABS.
I was going too fast and things took a turn for the worse when I arrived on a section of road covered in wet clay from a tractor crossing, just as a fully laden 12-ton truck came the other way. That was the end of my Supra and any illusion that I "knew everything about driving".
The thing I remember most about that Supra was that it was very responsive to the throttle and it didn't take much to get the tail wagging - AND it was HEAVY.. so stopping it took some work and lighter hatches could make mince meat of you on the brakes. I loved my Supra but it was a bit of a beast and not exactly the type of car I expected Jimmy Broadbent - Sim Racer extraordinaire and Praga racing champion - to be playing around with.
The fact that Jimmy doesn't seem phased by the Supra is a source of admiration and concern for me! Either he doesn't know that the Supra wants to eat him alive... or maybe he's a bit of a dark horse and knows more about tuning that I gave him credit for.
The only way to find out was to go on track with him. Getting him to ride with me was a tougher proposition...
The Toyota Supra Mk IV - a la Broadbent - a mighty fine machine and Japanese models seem to be gaining traction with collectors sooooo.....
Thanks to #CarVertical for sponsoring this film and see ya'll soon :)
Thanks @Jimmy_Broadbent

yeah ive been watching him for a while now, and i remember when he got nabbed for some karting, and then in short order he was in the Praga series. it's really exciting seeing his racing career expanding. he's a fun guy, a good entertainer, and now he's getting his karma back by being able to rub elbows with some big names and big racing series.

Playful nicely balanced low-grip rear drive is so much fun. Some of the most fun I’ve had is in an MX-5 on a wet track. Low enough power, light enough, and skinny enough tyres to be really able to sling it around. The front drive hatch may be more stable in those conditions, but managing understeer constantly is soul sapping for me.

Makes me wonder what he was like when being in the passenger seat of the reasonably priced car lol Only thing I will say is when you were talking to Jimmy about the engine and when you got in the car you were talking about what you could see (the engine, the cockpit) but the camera was still pointed at you. Maybe next time turn the camera to the car you're talking about or do a couple of panning shots and edit those in as you're talking.

Great video that! Being a MKIV Supra owner that also tracks it I love this so much. Mine has circa 700bhp on low boost haha and 1251bhp at the moment on kill on racefuel, welcome to have a go when I next get out on track Ben. The stock spoiler surprisingly generates 60kg at 100mph (some say 80kg) and about 160kg at 155mph. You certainly notice it at top speed events and I suspect it’ll be doing something on track but not anything you’d feel. I think on that wet track you’d need a huge GT wang to even feel it on a Supra. MKIV can and are beasts on track but they come into there own a lot more on a dry track, can’t wait to get mine back out after watching this ❤🙌

I just admire how you're constantly learning more about your drive - I mean, who else would look up the downforce on that largely cosmetic wing? Great stuff. You have a rare combination of intelligence, experience and bravado. In presenting, I also like your ability to see different sides of an issue (again, like the wing - more downforce would make it faster, but would it still be a track day car?) without getting preachy or judgmental. To paraphrase The Stranger from "The Big Lebowski"... I like your style, Ben...:)

I do wonder why people get so hung up on the MK4 Supra's weight so much. UK spec Twin Turbo manual cars were 1566kgs and they were Top spec with 4 pots and diff Oil cooler pumps and Rads. It's basically the same as a BMW E46 m3 and you never hear people complain they are too heavy , And Unlike the M3, the boot floor doesn't fall out or crack the subframe mounts off when it's done a few hard drives. and it's still nearly 150 kgs lighter than the Nissan GTR's that were also on track (1740 kgs) As Boris the Blade said "Heavy good heavy is Reliable and if it doesn't work, you can still hit them with it.

@BenCollinsDrives. Love the high quality of your videos Ben - raw, yet polished, all at the same time. Amazing interviewing skills - I think you've got a bit of Clarkson on the interview side and a bit of Wilman on the production side! The historical video on Senna's F3 car was absolutely fantastic, as is this review of a more modern Supra turbo. The insider take on everything from the driver's details to the technical engineering aspects of the vehicle - you bring that extra little bit of intelligence to the automotive presentation that very few have the ability to observe, yet the skills to convey in a cogent and interesting manner. Keep up the good work!

But please, with all due respect to your video editor, they need to work on Audio Sync between separated Mic and Video tracks... Made it somewhat difficult to correlate between the steering corrections in reaction to the wheelspin and the gear changes that we saw in the Video, and what we heard of the over-revving and engine speed changes in the soundtrack... Would also have been nice if you could have Mic'd up Jimmy too, so the conversations were not so one-sided - particularly in-car where we could only hear your side of the convo... Love that Mk4. Its like a less-patina version of Cleetus' Ratrod Supra. Having a turbo already if the trans is made up to take it, 450hp is just the beginning lol. Killer regardless!

I've had/driven Supra MK4s, and I still have a standard JDM N/A Auto Supra maybe for sale. I will tell you this, the earlier models, even an N/A, will teach you a lesson if you can not control it with it being heavy and no assists. Once powerslided around a roundabout in the wet and it made me understand car control from then on.

I think the ABS in the Supra must be pretty good, I think when Car and Driver or something tested it in period, it had the shortest stopping distance of any car. Also yeah the 2JZ engine is famously powerful when modified, but because it's so heavy and the car is so long you mostly see modded Supras as drag cars. Looks very fun, although there's only so much you can learn about a car's capabilities when it's that wet. Maybe proofread your subtitles a bit more thoroughly for your next video? Edit: excited about that hint that you may drive the Mint MX-5 monster :)

Here’s a challenge to you, Ben: you should get another MKIV Supra and build it your way. More aero, tune the suspension your way, turbo, etc. . And the MKIV is not heavy when compared to modern platforms- 3,450. An R35 is 3,800lbs, very portly!

Apart from the audio beeing scuffed (it was only picking up the audio from your helmet camera, which was kind of delayed compared to the inboard camera) and there was a short image of the clocks visible when you were looking at the enginebay, but other than that, the raw experience is mega! EDIT: I think the stock wing needs the factory retractable front lip pro work properly?

The subtitles being horridly wrong really takes away. The people who actually can't pickup on their accents will be severely confused (like the editor likely was)

Being just a road car the wing is more for reducing lift at high speed than making down force. The mk4 Supra was really just a high speed tourer than a track weapon, although it was a weapon when transformed to JGTC spec. Best of all the Supra versions though. Collins must have been jesting with all that nervous act though, a big woolly Supra with only 450 brake is hardly scary on a track!

450hp in the rain with tyres that weren't really meant for wet driving, makes a bit of a difference lol he was putting in quite a bit of countersteer on the straights even though he was well into 3rd gear already.

Great vid! Love the longer format showing both your styles in full. Very relaxing and also very informative, seeing the interaction between you two. Your teacher/coach persona really comes out with Jimmy behind the wheel and in contrast your driver/excitement comes through when you are. And I might be alone in this but I especially like the 1st person /helmet cam stuff. It really puts me there and I feel the swoop n flow much more. But what I really appreciate is how it shows me when and where you look to the apexes. (Having driven that track a fair bit in sim) seeing when you start preparing your turns is super fascinating. I still have so much to learn and that view gives me a glimpse into a real pro’s technique. Very Awesome. (Ps I found the baked-in subtitles distracting because they couldn’t be turned off and weren’t very accurate anyway. I kept my thumb over them so I could hear what you were actually saying) ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

‘Scary Mary ‘ is the first phrase that springs to my mind . A cold wet damp Donnington is nearly as bad as Cadwell . Eeek . Personally I felt safer doing 100mph + down bumpy B roads in my old Westfield back in the day . Kinda reminds me of conditions at PFI once with my son going out on slicks hoping the track would dry , honestly it wasn’t me who told him it would be fine 🙄😵‍💫🫣😂. Agree with Ben , more aero …… plus maybe take off rear anti roll bar as this would have given more rear grip .
