I've had the chords for this memorized for a while but I love coming back to this to watch him sing the chords in place of the words it cheers me up when im feeling down
Justin, NICE improvisation on the vocals...!! I like it. I saw Don McLean in 1971 in North Andover, Massachusetts. He was the GREATEST solo act I've seen in all my 20 years...(at that time!). Now I'm 71, and still haven't changed my opinion!
Been watching Justin for 4 years. This guy is simply the best. When I compare his videos to others (of the same same) there is simply no comparison. Thanks Justin.
Great job on it justin! One of the beloved and forgotten classics!! Thanks
your the best teacher ive seen on youtube, thank you for teaching me the greats, also you have a beautiful voice

Thank you, Justin. Great lesson, always a joy watching your videos.

i ran into this video when i was looking for a few lessons and your channel is remarkable. keep up the great work!
great lesson Justin, so detailed, well done! keep up the good work.
Justin, Thank You So Much!!! This is a legend of a song and the way you presented it, as a beginner, I can even play it!
Thank you Justin great teacher! Love this, still looking at the book but nearly got it all without. You do realise you provide a sort of therapy along with the lessons keep it up.
I love how that E minor used to make me D.

Karl P "i couldn't take one more d" cracked me up 😂
Absolutely brilliant lesson Justin, quite a challenging song for a real novice but you break it down so clearly and patiently that you give me hope that I'll be able to get somewhere with it. Huge thanks!
You're a fabulous teacher, thank you!
These lessons really help, thank you !
You do a fantastic job teaching. Thank you.
Your enthusiasm just keeps on shining through :)
Thanks for this great tutorial! Really helpful for beginners like me
you have great teaching ability...thanks for your altruistic sharing...and your enthousiasm and inspiration
Hey Justin I've been playing ( practicing) seriously for around 18 months and i must say every time i get into a fix your tutorials help me immensely . I thought i would never be able to play Beatles "Something" and now "American Pie" you make me feel like a superstar. Thanks Heaps Buddy :) Regards San from Australia. PS: Think i'll buy your book.
Totally agree with Tommy Huff, Justin your playing and teaching is awesome am really enjoying your video's long may you continue.
You really helped me with my strumming, thanks!
I remember the day i sent you an email years ago on your site requesting this song and a couple of weeks later there it was. Was having a small bout of nostalgia, found my old guitar and will work my way retroactively to learn again. Cheers bud for everything and im so glad to see you still hard at it!
you're just great ,pure and simple .. Carry on dude
You are amazing. Thanks so much.
Hey Justin. A great classic here. It's a good musical history of America in one song. Great job!
Yes finally thank you Justin
Great job
Thank you!!!
I'm so amused at the way you sing the chord names in place of the lyrics. I've been teaching full time for over 30 years, and I thought I was the only person who did that. It's a really great tool. Nice job on the first favorite song I ever had when I was 6 years old.
Too bad you never were at a party with me, Imma belt out all the words to this song. It only gets awkward when I do it when a different song is playing...

ty justin good good song
This was brilliant. I just saw it today. Wrote down all the chords and having a good time by myself for now lol
Justin your awesome. I really love it when you play most off whole song then break it down. I really enjoy playing the song with you after I learn it. ( exp, LoLa )
"C-up truck." I couldn't get over that one.
Obrigado amigo !!!! Abraço de são Paulo Brazil
Favourite lesson so far
Your the best teacher on the web !!
Awesome
That singing was just amazing this is going into my Playlist to learn
Outstanding lesson Justin. I really appreciate your going into detail on the chord/grip variations and transitions and the strumming patterns. Super helpful for someone (like me) working out how to perform the tune.

7:40 sounds like the party is starting.. great tune, wonderful lesson!!
Thanks So much for the lesson. Having a great time with it among others you have helped me out with. Where can I request a song from you to help me out with that I am struggling with? BTW, I loved seeing you and Marty together jamming. Love to see the behind the scenes on that one. I would of loved to hang out with both of you together just jamming and learning. My daughter is learning from me AKA YOU teaching her guitar. Thanks again!! :)

Great lesson. I just suggest that at some parts, ike 'Can music save your mortal soul'... the Am should be an Am7 :)

Looks like you enjoyed playing that Justin..hope you are keeping well.
Thanks so much Justin! Does anyone know the strum pattern for the chorus? x
Justin, I am a great fan of yours, but after listening a lot the record and live performances I am pretty sure the strumming pattern is not like you say, but more simply a continuous pattern. And it works better!
Please do a tutorial for lay it all on me by rudimental ft Ed sheeran. I've been having a hard time getting th strum pattern down. Please help!!
I hope I’m not asking a question that’s already been answered but are you using a pick Justin? It looks like you’re just holding your fingers in that position. Thanks so much for these lessons! I always seek out the blue framed tutorials.
Could you do oh boy by buddy holly I liked your videos on peggy sue, that'll be the day and its so easy
hi Jason, just started to play about 6 months now and love it, thanks.
Hey Justin, what's the story with the broken arrow tattoo, if you don't mind me asking.
Hi Justin! Really like your policy if making outstanding vids on printed songbooks, thanks a lot! Please give me advice: I can play about 10 songs along the originals, and got stuck repeating them, cannot enforce myself to learn new, simply have no daily time. What is the best way to keep old songs in memory and learning new, a question about best routine for students like me?

What strumming pattern are you playing on the variation (19:04).. Just can't get it right.

you might like to watch my band making a new album in January 2015 - we'll be putting lots of stuff on KZread - the We Came As Strangers channel!
Do you know the last chorus? How the song ends. The one video I watch of it live by Don McLean he sings and plays the chorus twice at the end and the last time is slightly different Don’t know if he just slows down? Do u know what I’m talking about
I would like to get the book you showed. Where does it live?

2:21 Oh challenge accepted good sir
Hey! Great video man and I'm not hating or anything but i found it very confusing when you started going offtrack from the song (embelishments, other ways of playing the chords, etc) I had to restart the video many times to find where i got lost. Aside from that, awesome playing and amazing song :)
Did you write the A minor of love?

You can see how much you love playing this song.
I can
Dear Justin: my ultimate dream is to learn Freak Out by CHIC, your old lesson is too difficult for me, can you redo it for dummies?
Hello ,Justin. I hope you will find a little time to answer my question. Why don't you do a lesson on your tune named "hand built by Richard Morrison".i really like it and want to play it. Thank you for your attention.

Just wanted to add one thing that I figured out by ear. On the very last chorus, it ends with C D G C G.

fair crack man,but listen seriously vocals 1st american soft vowels and smooth constants...hope this helps for an antipodean.
I know all the words 🙃
I fell apart at "I couldn't take one more D"
GOD DAMIT RIGHT BEFORE THE FAST PART HE STOPED
Hardest lesson to learn by far? Lining up vocals with the cords! I'm finding it impossible.

+Shawn Neal Hey I know I'm WAY LATE but it's easier when you listen to the song over and over and over and can remember the entire song, lyrics, chords, everything This is definitely one of the harder songs I've learned and I gave up on it for like 6 months and listened to it at least 500 times during that 6 months
I know all the lyrics to this song
I know all the lyrics
Justin why are you repeating songs you have already made before?

HD Versions.
The "I read about his widowed bride" is Am C. Not C and D.
Just so you know my friend cam knows all of the lyrics
baad nees on the doorstep i could nt one more step
The lyrics are a bit off at parts, the purposeful prolonging is off from the original, and sounds really weird.
