@@incognito9533 Mate ROd Marsh was like the early pioneer of the wicketkeeper who could bat, then you started seeing the likes of Healy Gilchrist, Sangakkara, Dhoni, Boucher and so on. But Marsh was the first to start that trend. Shane in my opinion is the greatest cricketer after Bradman. He was magical to watch, he was so influential on matches that you could never count him out, whether that was with the ball or bat. Mark Taylor put it perfectly "If you have Shane Warne in your side, anything can happen". I am gutted that we lost 2 legends in one day.

Should watch Warnies' top 50 Australian wickets. He was a game changer. He took spin bowling to another level. He became an attack weapon just like a fast bowler. In Australia, Warne is second only to Don Bradman, a batsman who retired with a Test batting average of 99.64 . The nearest Test batter in the long history of the game, to him, has an average of around 60. "The Don" was that good!

Legspin bowling is considered the most difficult out of all types of bowling in Cricket to control and be accurate with. The things that made Warne special were the amount of revolutions he could impart on the ball, while being so accurate. You could hear the ball fizz through the air, so much so that it made the ball drift(curve) and dip in the air, and then spin off the pitch turning the other way opposite to the curve.

  • @DaveWhoa

Rod Marsh was one of original Aussie Cricketers who stuck their fingers up at the old fogies of cricket in England. The game was changed to add some colour & be played in 1 day compared to 5 days of traditional cricket. A pioneer of a new cricketing era & for players to earn decent $$$$$. Rod was a Wicket Keeper / Batsmen & even vice captain. Shane was a pioneer in his spin bowling style along with his flamboyant lifestyle. Shane's bowling style was unique & comparing baseball - he was like a Lefty Pitcher. A Spin Bowler slows the run rate down as does a Lefty Pitcher. I had the pleasure of meeting Shane whilst he was playing at the SCG working alongside the Police. Kids loved him as he took the time to sign autographs & chat with the kids in the training nets. Shane would often stop his warm ups to spend time with the young fans.

In Cricket, the "pitch" is the name for the rectangle of hardened turf in the center of the field. The equivalent of "pitching" in baseball is called bowling and the "catcher" is called the wicket-keeper. Also, Warne is pronounced like "worn" except being Australians we don't really pronounce the R so for us it would rhyme with Vaughn.

It’s special because it was his VERY FIRST bowl ever in England, and for the Ashes test no less. If your curious about cricket, you do need to see videos about the “Laws of Cricket”. (Fans get very cross when rules are referred to) Just remember that Cricket has “Laws” and not rules, and you will of to a good start. Also, of with the faster of the 3 versions of cricket, that being 20/20 (only 20 over each, an over is 6 balls bowled”) One day cricket is 50 overs and Test cricket goes for 5 days and is much more tactical, thus a lot slower, but it’s the traditional original version of the game. And it is this version where the statistics hold the most weight. Don Bradman. Another Aussie is cited as being the best sportsman of any sport, of all time, simply because he was far more than twice as good as rest combined, nearly 3 time on average. And he is nearly twice as good as his nearest competitors. Sadly his Career was in the 30’s and their isn’t much film stock of his skill. Just Google “Sir Don Bradman”. (Interesting fact. We he was very ill whilst visiting England, the then King of Great Britain etc, “Personally” rang the hospital himself, to see how he was doing, and the Red Cross was overwhelmed with blood donors (he needed surgery, as he was very crook indeed). The point is, if yo7 wan5 to learn more about Australia and Cricket. Then you absolutely have to learn about the greatest batsman of all time. This is a simple undisputed fact, that NO ONE argues, regardless of their nation. He was that good. Warnie was the spin bowling equivalent or Sir Don Bradman, that’s why he’s so well known.

Rod Marsh and Dennis Lilly were are great combination back those days. Dennis Lilly was also one of the best and his fast bowling with Rod's help collected so many wickets together. Looking on the score board you would see Bowler Lilly caught Marsh. Used to love watching cricket with my Pop when the one day series started when these guys played back then.

Yes, such a shock to have two Aussie cricketing legends die so close together. Shane Warne was my age so it certainly hit home. In cricket, players 'bowl' the ball on a pitch. The person doing the bowling is a bowler and the person behind the wicket (the wooden bails behind the batter) is a wicket keeper. The bowler's job is to get the batter out for the least amount of runs possible.

Greeetings from down under --- Mate you REALLY need to do a cricket video, I've payed both cricket and baseball and they are similar but extremely different. The grass bit is called the pitch, the 3 wooden poles are the stumps or together they are the wickets. The bat is a bat, the bowler is similar to a pitcher but are generally 1 type with a bit of a change. That is quick with maybe a slower ball, spinner can be leg spin (from the batters legs toward the bat for right handed batsman) or off spin (bat toward their legs) but can occasionally spin it the other direction (wrong'un). When you start getting into the rules and field placement it can be very confusing (slips and square legs, fine legs and silly mid-on's). I really hope that you can fine a good video here to help you on your appreciation journey

Marsh was a wicket keeper, which is the equivalent of a catcher in basebal Unlike baseball, getting caught behind by the wicket keeper is a very common way for a batter to get out. Super quick reflexes and agility to catch the ball from the batter edging the ball makes a for a good wicket keeper,. And Marsh was one of the best.

Every time I see the announcement of Warnie's passing I have to process again. Rod Marsh was a hero and did more for Australian cricket than can ever be known and it was a day of genuine sadness. Shane Warne is one of those great larger than life characters that come once in a life-time and it was a privilege to watch his whole career. Gone at 52, the world has been robbed. He has one of the most recognised names in cricket but he is well known far beyond that. It didn't hurt that he was engaged to Liz Hurley for a long time. So now some comments on your reaction: Awesome job Ian. For this being first time you watched anything you nailed every comment. They are batsmen in cricket not batters( although increasingly the name "batter" is being used), it is a bowler not a pitcher, and a wicket keeper (Rod Marsh) not a catcher. And one more cricketers get "runs" not "hits". While a baseball player will get hits with the hope the build toward a run if they are responsible for two in a game they are ahead. In cricket it matters very little how many times you hit the ball, you have to get a run for it to count, and you probably need 50 or more for anyone to take notice of your performance. If you do start watching cricket just be warned you will want to compare it to baseball and you will get a thousand cricket fans screaming at you not to do it. However, just so you know - there are enough similarities (baseball being further along the bat ball sport evolutionary trail) for it to make sense for you. BTW the way you talked about Shane Warnes deliver was spot on, what he bowled when you made the comment was a "wrongun." And yes he bowled it out of the back of the hand and it did the opposite of what you would expect it to do. One last thing: it is possible for an American to watch, understand and love cricket. There is a KZread channel called "Cricket for Americans." Two guys down in Les Vegas that stumbled onto cricket about two years ago. As baseball fans they decided to learn the game - they knew about as much as you do. Today they know more than most and are incredibly fun to watch. Shout out to Nick and Gabe.

As he got a bit closer he could see Warnie with a cigarette in his mouth, a beer in one hand and bowling a tennis ball to the kids. Being almost impossible to get spin on a tennis ball on sand the kids were taking the opportunity to smash Warnie all over the place, and he was loving every minute of it. Apparently the game went on for another 90 minutes before it all ended.

I spent the last few days just crying and wondering how this happens. And in 24 hours, no less. Totally and utterly devastating to think the world will never get to listen to the abundance of knowledge Shane had to offer to anyone willing to listen. Take 15 minutes and just look at some of Warne's bowling brilliance, nobody could turn a ball like he could. It's amazing, you also have to look at his "ball of the century", I promise you will be impressed by his talent and skill. Such a shame to lose him at such a young age but he did manage to fit 3 lifetimes into his 52 years. For a bit of background Ian... Rod Marsh was a Western Australian wicketkeeper that got called up to the test side in 1970. During his first few tests, he was having a terrible time behind the stumps, and got the nickname "Irongloves" and "Bacchus". His wife thought that it meant: Back us up or there will be more byes going through! But, it also needs to be said that Rod loved his alcohol, and Bacchus Marsh is a town / suburb in western Melbourne. He also held the record for the most cans of beer consumed on the Sydney - London flight - I think was 47, but I will stand corrected on that. During his career, he kept to the dynamic duo of Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thompson. Both were 90 plus m.p.h. fast bowlers. Lillee was predictable, whereas when Thompson was bowling, Marsh often needed a motorbilke to take the wayward deliveries! Or, a set of springs to get high enough to grab onto a bouncer! There is a highlight of Rod Marsh in a one day game, having hit a shot, and running down the pitch with the handle of the bat in his hand, but, no bat was attached to the handle! Incidentally, Marsh finished with 355 catches / stumpings, the same number of dismissals as his Western Australian team mate Dennis Lillee, and 95 of those dismissals were Caught Marsh, bowled Lillee. Shane Warne was a Victorian player that was called to the test side, and had little success in his first couple of outings. He made his name in a Brisbane test against the West Indies, snaring 8 wickets for 72 runs (8/72). In the highlight reel you played, the video marked #3 was Warne's first ball in test cricket in England. Mike Gatting was the facing batsman, Graeme Gooch was the non striker and Harold "Dickie" Bird was the umpire at the bowlers' end. All 3 of the above mentioned people have been interviewed on Saturday, after hearing of Warne's passing. All mention that ball - The Ball of the Century! Best commentary is from Richie Benaud on that delivery. The art of leg spin was practiced by Richie Benaud, as a former captain of Australia, but Shane Warne took this to a new level. Shane Warne finished his test career with 708 test wickets, currently second on the all time wicket taking list. If you go to that third video, you can see the ball swing in the air, pitch / bounce, then deviate to the left from pitching. The swing is generated by the amount of action that is put on the ball from the hand. Because the ball is spinning in the air from right to left, imagine that the ball is up against an invisible vertical surface. Due to the spin exerted on the ball, the ball is trying to go to the right through the air, which is acting as the invisible wall. When the ball lands on the pitch, the ball grips into the grass or lack of, and the spin that is on the ball alters the course of the ball after landing. How the ball lands on the pitch also has a bearing. If the ball lands with seam to pitch, it will get moue grip than when it lands fully on the leather. By my reckoning, the most that he has gotten a ball to deviate was 36 inches from pitching to the stumps. The stumps are the 3 timber pegs that the batsmen stand in front of and try to protect. The leg spin bowler, depending on the condition of the pitch, will be trying to land the ball between 10 and 15 feet from the batsman, and depending on what ball the bowler is trying to deliver. It also needs to be stated that not too many leg spin bowlers can get the ball to swing through the air, nor get the amount of turn that Warne was able to generate.

I loved your video. Your humility in explaining that you don't know a lot about cricket was impressive yet you still found the time to share your grief with your Australian viewers. I am Australian; I have family in San Antonio and Chicago. I've been to Wrigley Field and am a member of the Chicago Cubs. I love baseball and a lot of cricketers at the highest level love baseball too. A former Australian captain, Ian Chappell, played baseball in the Masters Games. You may not know this but the origins of baseball came from cricket and rounders. I am more than happy to go over the rules of cricket if you wanted me to. Like baseball, it's a great game but it also can be tedious if not much is happening. But that's the beauty of both those sports, they can have moments of tedium punctuated by incredible excitement. Baseball's appeal provided changes in cricket formats that have made it more entertaining over a shorter period of time. It helped cricket like cricket helped baseball. Where I live in Greensborough, a suburb of Melbourne, there are 3 baseball fields within a ten minute driving distance. The ABL is probably the standard of maybe AA minor league. Many Americans come to play in your off-season and stay or go back for the start of Spring training. Baseball is a popular sport in Australia. 32 Australians have represented Major League teams and 11 have participated in a winning world series team. The first Australian represented a major league team in 1899. I am shocked by the loss of Shane Warne. I compare it to when I heard John Lennon died. He was only 52. He was an amazing talent and rejuvenated the art of leg spin which was dying in this country because it's very difficult to do. When he bowled, mostly, something was going to happen. His average of 25 runs per wicket for a spinner is the best ever of any type of spinner. He was very accurate for that type of bowler because you don't have as much control bowling from the back of the hand as you do if you're a finger spinner. I could say more but he was a great guy and character that is missing in sport today. Rod Marsh's loss is sad. He was the best wicketkeeper ever in all the world. And he was the beginning of the wicketkeeper batsman when before him it was more important on your skills on being a keeper but now wicketkeepers are selected for their combined ability to bat and wicketkeep. He started that. Thank you again for this video. Your understanding about the game for someone who thinks he doesn't know was excellent. Keep up the good work and I hope you take up my offer in understanding cricket better. Great work. RIP Warnie and Rod Marsh

The whole object of the game is "the Bails" (The 2 bits of wood balancing on top of the Stumps - Together they're called a wicket) The game is played on "The Pitch" (the area between the wickets) "The Crease" is the line on the ground in front of the wickets.. Boundary The batsman's job is the protect the Bails and score by hitting runs (Batsmen run between the Crease in front of wickets - A boundary is worth 4 runs - a ball that exceeds the boundary on the full is 6 runs) The batsman cannot protect the wicket with his legs The Bowlers job is to remove the bails from the stumps (Bowled) or force the Batsman to hit the ball to a fielder on the full (Caught) or cause the Batsman to block the ball with his legs (Leg Before Wicket - The umpire decides whether the ball would hit the Stumps to be given out) Each Bowler gets 6 bowls (6 balls per Over - then another Bowler gets to bowl from the other end - Wicket) The bowlers foot must not go over the crease line when bowling (if so - No ball is called and the batsman cannot get out) The bowler must bowl a ball that is within reach of the batter (if not - a Wide is called - but if batsman plays at ball he can get out - the batter can also deflect the ball with his legs and make runs - This is called a Leg Bye it counts in overall score but not attributed to the batter) In either case of No Ball or Wide - the bowler must re-bowl the ball and any runs made are called "Extras" The ball is in play (the batsmen can be given out) from the time the ball leaves the bowlers hand till the bowler is ready to bowl again The Batsman are safe while ever they remain within the crease (to protect the bails) The batsman is given out if they're "Stumped" - the bails are removed while they're "Outside The Crease" or running between wickets If the Bails are removed from on top of the stumps for ANY reason while the ball is in play --- the batsman is out The whole object of the game is The Bails - The Batters have to defend the Bails and the fielding team have to knock them off

So proud to see you watching cricket and absorbing this sport, growing up on a farm, cricket was a huge part of my life. I watched Warnie play at many games at the WACA and never ceased to amaze me with his skill as a bowler and batter! I hope you do get to watch more cricket. Perth Scorchers are an awesome Big Bash League team.

They called Rod Marsh "Irongloves" and if the ball came anywhere near him the Batsman knew he was gone! He was a Legend! Shane Warne was a Master. He made the cricket ball defy gravity & physics with the spin he managed to put on it...awesome to watch. Huge losses to the World of Cricket. Condolences to both Families.

He was called "Iron Gloves" because in the first few tests he dropped a few catches. Because his hands were too hard, like they were made of iron.

Warnie is an absolute legend. If you want to watch a game though start with a 20/20 match, a lot more exciting. Test matches (the white outfits) go on for days, 20/20 is a few hours

Really enjoy your channel. Shane was often referred to as the "loveable rogue". He had flaws and made many mistakes throughout his (way to short) life. But he WAS Australia! He was a legend. He would never give up. He was at his best, not when when we were winning, but when were loosing. That's when he stood tall and took it upon himself to win it for us. He carried the nation. There was always hope when he had the ball in his hand, and most times he did it. He loved the cricket community, a fierce competitor on the field, but a guy who would pat you on the back and say well done after the game to the opponents. And then buy them a beer (or 3). A really sad day for this country on top of the flooding in so many parts of Australia. We have had 2 generations of legends pass in the last couple of days! And Ukraine and COVID, when do we get smile again!

😭😭😭😭, Warne is like John Farnham in cricket. He is truely a legend. Our greatest spin bowler ever produced from Australia. Possible the greatest of them all. Alot of fond memories of me been a kid glued to the tele watching him play trying to replicate. A huge rugby league fan since the 80s, every kid who played footy during the winter season always played cricket in the summer. It went hand in hand with each other. Back when Aussie kids did nothing but play outside with their neighbourhood and school mates. Only came home when the street lights came on. Thank you for this video huge respect
