Completely agree. This season’s “horror” came from the fact that the people in it endured what was forced to them.

I love how Elsa sang David Bowie songs for her performances. And “Heros” was a perfect ending number for the season.

This finale had me in tears. She definitely redeemed herself by choosing to "commit suicide". I think by her choosing to do this willing, her darkness was forgiven. That's why she was able to reunite with the other freaks and preform for eternity with them.

This ending is beautiful. First when you watch the show, you think "poor woman, she dreams of being a Hollywood star, but that's not possible. She's too old, and too old fashioned. She's the last thing Hollywood needs. It's never gonna happen for her." Then, surprise, it happens! She get's the fame, the Hollywood glory, against all odds... Except it sucks. It's pathetic, she gets exactly what she dreamed of and what we never thought was possible, but it is just shit. Her biggest dream comes true but it just turns to ashes in her mouth. Then, beautiful idea, they have her perform on halloween and we're thinking "there's no way Edward mordrake is gonna come and take her in thee middle of freaking Hollywood..." But he does, he just comes, as a completely weird presence in the middle of the streets and the studio of LA, and he's invisible too everybody except her. The line "no! The fog doesn't come until the goblins" is classic American horror story humor, hilarious. And he takes her in this beautiful tragic ending. The morality is a mix of "be careful what you wish for", "your sins stain your sowl" and "there's no place like home". Beautiful, original writing, wich knows how to take old ides and mechanism and make them brand new and fresh...

This whole scene, especially the "everything we got at home is just fine" literally had me choked up. This was my absolute favourite season, which is funny because when it started I didn't think I would like it 😄

Poor Elsa. She ended up in a loveless marriage, her career was ruined, and almost all the "freaks" and her lover were dead or dying so she had no reason to continue living. Good thing she ended up with them after death.

Honestly their best season so far. For a while it was a close tie with Asylum for me, but Freak Show is a masterpiece.

1,2,3 and 4 were the best. it just got better and better till it hit hotel. hotel is good but it's not as good as the season b4. I lost interest in mid season of hotel. devil's night was the best episode I saw on hotel. Roanoke I don't know bout that one yet....

Edward Mordrake gave her a gift. Eternal happiness in a place where she is loved forever.

First off Edward is so lovely, secondly this ending made me happy. I’m glad Elsa was able to return to happiness and be with the ones she truly loved

The episode where Pepper gets sent to the asylum because she was framed for her nephews death was sadder

This season was so emotional for me; I cried so many times during it.

This was easily the best season, and the ending was perfect. She finally got her happy ending with the family that loves her. Everyone got their happy ending, everything was perfect.

I loved how throughout the season, Elsa dreamed of being successful and a big star, yet when she finally got that wish and is now famous, she doesn’t enjoy it. She missed having her troupe with her to bask in the fame and she felt very dismal despite now being a success. To perform Heroes on Halloween knowing it will summon Mordrake who will kill her makes the scene more memorable as as she’s singing, you know it’s one big spectacular suicide. Plus the scenes where we see Desiree, Jimmy and the twins in their lives all happy is amazing as it shows despite the sadness of this season, they finally got their happiness. And Elsa finally got her happiness when she died and is reunited with her troupe of freaks in Heaven.

Yup! She knew that Mordrake always took a soul on Halloween night, and staged the whole thing so it could be hers. And being Elsa, she had to go out with a song! :p

this was my absolute favorite finale for any of the other AHS seasons

I wish pepper could’ve seen her perform

This was literally my favourite season so far

I do like that everyone got a happy ending. But I wish jimmy ended up with maggie.

IKRRRR I can't help but feel like Jimmy didn't truly love the twins. Its a cute thought but it seems so one sided

Best ending of any AHS period

Elsa may have died but she still got her happy ending in death. Hopefully when Pepper died she reunited with her.

I keep coming back to this - it’s just so amazing and it makes me very happy.

Bette states when that she doesn’t care about their relationship and she can give them privacy by simply closing her eyes and leave her body.

This makes no sense and seems like the producers or distributors forced a happy ending on the writers, which is all too typical. Why wouldn't Elsa be taken as one of Mordrake's troupe? And why wouldn't Mordrake take Dandy, who was the most vile creature of them all, a truly soulless monster who deserved to go to hell? Probably had something to do with scheduling Wes Bentley and other production factors. Actually, a whole series on the Mordrake myth could be very entertaining. I know he's just the invention of a turn-of-the-20th-century newspaper writer but it's a very cool story nonetheless.

vual grimoire They made it nostalgic rather than " happy " because Elsa find redemption unlike other freaks who died. In a way she forgave herself and became a better person unlike Dandy, Esmeralda ... who really deserved to die. It was a proper goodbye to the wonderful Jessica Lange

I actually had the same sort of question, but I think that Elsa literally couldn't be apart of Mordrake's troupe. He and Elsa both where 'leaders' of their respective freak shows. Hers had been waiting for her to return. Saying 'Your place is not with us' means her place was with her people, her freak show. Could you imagine Elsa working under anyone? even dead? Dandy didn't die during Halloween, and that was the only time he could collect another soul for his troupe. He also isn't what is considered a 'freak' or Physically deformed.

Is this a happy ending for Elsa? Who knows. But what’s for certain: it’s what she wanted. Love her or hate her, she went out on top and on her own terms. A true star.

SPOILER WARNING!!!! But does Elsa actually die? I just finished watching season 4 and I'm so confused. Pepper appears in both season 2 and 4 and we see her backstory but the way it was presented when Pepper was looking at a magazine of Elsa in the asylum made me think that Elsa went to Hollywood became famous had the car accident and became a nun (possibly changed her name too). The actor plays both characters. But then? She died? I thought at first maybe she was ay some sort of trance? Coz she went to heaven when she CLEARLY didn't deserve to
