American goes to Johannesburg, South Africa

Ойын-сауық

My subscribers told me to get out of Cape Town if I want to see the real South Africa...so I went to Johannesburg. This is what I saw.

South Africa Is really weird because the places are ambiguous in the sense that there is huge difference in people, infrastructure and personalities. Some people can speak English as if they are from England whereas some of us cant even speak full sentences. Some people have the best education from the ieb whereas others learn in schools under a tree. This South Africa is so bad. But, it's also so good. It's not fair for alot though. Because the educational system has not really benefited the poor. Love, Siya👋

Thank you! I live in Johannesburg and so many of my international friends and family are scared to come visit. They hear about all the negative stuff but forget that it is a real place with real people. Jozi may not be as shiny and fancy as Cape Town, but it's real over here, and people are missing out because they only want to go hang in the Cape.

Joburg is great and has always been that way. You can't compare SA cities because they are all great in different ways. Their differences in everything is the reason that make them unique. And mass crime in Jozi can't be painted on SA people only because Jozi is populated by the foreigners numbers, and mostly from other African countries. Johannesburg is the best city for everyone who wants to make money and live freely as long as you are permitted to do so and have good reasons for being in the country. I'm born, bred, educated in CPT and got married in Joburg 37 years ago. I go home to CPT for visiting but I prefer living my life in Jozi. Jozi people are just what I am naturally and I am happy to be among Soweto people in solidarity and other ways.💁‍♀️💁‍♂️ American friends please take your time to learn how wonderful Gauteng province is, welcome to Jozi. 😍❤️

Amazing video! Well researched and a great way to experience Jozi 🔥 I just wish you would also visit another important city in South Africa’s history, Pretoria. It’s the administrative capital and there’s a lot of major events that took place historically that had an impact on South Africa and all it’s citizens forever. It’s a really important part of SA history, Pretoria’s transition from apartheid to modern day democracy is very notable in all it’s people and the townships, from being the seat of apartheid power structures and a symbol of Afrikaner nationalism to being a cosmopolitan diverse city today, it has a very different atmosphere from Cape Town as well, from the historical bustling city centre to the jacaranda tree lined streets, and the growing townships of Soshanguve, Mamelodi and Atteridgeville, these black communities have also done well for themselves, against all the hardships of thriving in a city with gatekeepers of wealth and weaker job market compared to Johannesburg, they still managed to make it. It’s not perfect but Pretoria is also a city worth exploring and putting on the map as it’s mostly underrated and under appreciated.

This take may be very misleading to many people. Cape Town also has big townships with similar aspects of what you see in Soweto. To give the impression that you have to fly from Cape Town to Soweto in order to see the real South Africa can be very misleading. The parallels that exist in Johannesburg also exist in Cape Town. Also, Cape Town as a city has higher murder rates than Johannesburg. So the real South Africa exists in all cities and towns in the country.

There’s too many fun things to do in Joburg, I don’t know why poverty porn is the only thing that intrigues people about this city. You’ll find the same amount of poverty in Cape Town as you would in Joburg and you’ll find the same amount of luxury in Joburg as you would in Cape Town.

My thing is that if you are a tourist and you're going to narrate a story about South Africa, it is important to tell an accurate story and therefore research it properly. The situation in Hillbrow has nothing to do with the growing population because you're not going to find a single South African residing there. It has everything to do with illegal immigration. If you're going to be apologetic about stating this fact, then don't tell people about Hillbrow and just leave it alone. Rather stick to Soweto or to those places where you're going to find a growing SOUTH AFRICAN population experiencing the challenges that you've also stated. The Hillbrow story is actually annoying us to say the least because it is now reflecting as our story when it is not. We don't run down our cities and areas of residence. We improve them. When you look at the rest of Africa, you will see who is capable of running down infrastructure. That said, we always appreciate tourists who cover content about our precious country, as long as it is accurate. It took a white Australian tourist by the name of "The Indigo Traveller" to highlight to his audience exactly who is dominating Johannesburg CBD areas like Hillbrow and pedestrian walkways, and it is funny because it is our own kind who always claim that white people are here to tell lies about Africa when so far, we've received accuracy on their part as far as South Africa is concerned 🇿🇦

They are now using the title for views and clout. It's really annoying. This particular tourist has decided to censor the parts where this amazing tour guide talks about building hijacking and decisions made by politicians.. which I presume it's a lack of political will to stop illegal immigration and to crack down on illegal immigrant crime syndicates. And yes it is very interesting that it is our fellow black brothers from the diaspora who come as tourists and report lies or just decide to ignore the truth ...which is one and the same thing to be honest. Also this use of the title synonymous with a very successful and credible tour company is quite sad. You would think they would be happy that a fellow black couple from their country is doing well here ...ay bayabhora shem.

Well said Zipporah 100% correct. First of all I'd like to advise that all our visitors in SA should find the real SA guide that is not just a youngster fresh from school. I heard them when they narrate our history and stories, they really know very little. Do some research and ask from real SA educated one or go to arts and culture of SA to find somebody who can help you or at least from older ones and elderly people. But stop going to downtown CBD HILLBROW and other sites of old JOBURG, because those sites are hijacked by African illegal immigrants and they are dangerous. Real SA left their houses and went back to municipality houses in townships ( ghettos) just to be far away from those folks. And even though you might find one or two SAns staying there, is because they are trapped in the situation for good reasons, or they have no money or means to leave the goddamn hellish places . Those who live there are nationals from many different African countries, who runned down their countries to a real hell if you have the picture. They came to SA and we thought that they want a break to real good living. Unfortunately dismantling, destroying and running down cities and you can ever imagine, is their first name, and that is the language they know and they love. They can't stand anyone opposing them not even government. And these whites or colonizers they are accusing for their miserable life and behaviors are the architectural brands of all these cities infrastructures and beauty. In fact the whole Africa was built by them, yes using their hands and resources but the money and machines they brought to build Africa, were whites. They left everything including their personal belongings behind when they were chased out of the continent Africa around 70 yrs 65yrs 55 yrs to ( 42 yrs the last country of Zimbabwe) ago. They have all the time to do whatever beautiful they like in African countries if they were wise enough. Or at least maintained, renovated and developed their countries further. But noo they preferred to fight over powers, grab and fight for everything left behind and end up distroying instead of developing. They dictated one another, abusing each other's lives and doing nothing but fighting over everything until their countries decayed and slumming took over in their countries. That is exactly what they are doing in SA since they came in. Starting in the cities and they love beautiful cities but only to mess up with them. And now they are busy entering small towns and these towns administrators are nervous about their territories because there'll be lots of crime and death as it happens everywhere and every single day. They don't know good and healthy lives they understand opposite lifestyle only. SA are really worried about their territories, lives and security. So rather go to locals like soweto and certain subarbs where you'll find SA people that can help you . TSAMAYA SENHLE HAMBAKAHLE MOOILOOP SAFE TRIPS AND WE LOVE YOU 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♂️😂

Out of all the major cities on the African continent that I've checked out so far here on YT, Johannesburg is truly the one that reminds me the most of my own hometown of Los Angeles in the US (at least in spirit, lol). If I was a natural-born "globe-trekker" type, I would definitely pay this city an extended visit for sure, especially the surrounding townships because the people living in those parts are whom I resonate with the most 😊💗👍. South Africa as a whole is a country with tremendous potential to be a legitimate world power, but like all countries that strive to attain 1st-world status (mine included, heh), it must first deal with its lingering domestic issues left over from its oppressive past. Getting rid of Apartheid, believe it or not, was the EASY part for you folks that live there. Hard part is making sure you don't end up taking the place of those very same people that came up with such shamefully inhumane social/political practices and inadvertently repeating them in the process. Hearing of how those white farmers that were responsible for much of the country's food production were violently driven out by the current SA government recently is one glaring example. Otherwise, gonna end up just like neighboring Zimbabwe and nobody really wants to see that happen again... 😔🙏

Cape Town is more about the scenery and activities out doors and sitting in coffee shops and such. I lived in Pretoria for 6 yrs and I was always excited to visit Joburg even just the surrounding suburbs. But the cbd was magical. I often wish I could have spent more time exploring.

There is no "Real South Africa" and that is the beauty of this country. I do agree, the Western Cape (especially Cape Town, the Winelands & the Garden Route) is the best and most beautiful province in South Africa and it does offer you everything most other entire countries do. The fact is though, there is still Joburg, Durban and so much more, that just offers even MORE variety to the already amazing country.

Its so difficult defining what the real South Africa is. The country is huge and nature can change in a matter of 400km of travel. This also bring huge culture changes. I live in the Gardenroute which is 4h drive from Cape Town. This area is completely different from Cape Town. I think the thing that can define South Africa is Diversity.

@Bongz, Of course you kinda live in "Little Europe" when you in Cape Town surbubs. The proper South Africa you'll get in the nearby Townships, i.e. Nyanga, Langa, Gugs, Khayelitsha, Mitchells Plain, etc. Lived in both cities (i.e. Cape Town & Joburg) though. The main difference between the two is the diversity you find in and around Joburg. From a Proud South African - 🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦
