It's The Bifrost alright, afterall you cant travel between the realms without it, unless you want to encounter rattataskor, the God squirrel that runs up and down Yggdrasil to Veđrfolfnir and Niddhogr to pass insults.

When Laura says to Shadow that she's going to kill Wednesday, you said he doesn't give her an answer, but he actually says "it's a free country", which we all know means "do whatever you want".

Slow and disheveled.. I do like how Nancy and Ibis are playing chess and commentating on Wednesday’s moves like gods looking down dispassionately at the chaos they orchestrated engulfing men.

The plot is very different to the book.

In that “My boy is gonna be fine” scene, Mr Wednesday sits in the Continental from John Wick 2 where John shot and killed on company ground

I hope they film Anansi Boys with Orlando in the lead. I liked this episode and your assessment.

As a non book reader, I thank you for not spoiling the reveal all this time. Was nice to learn the twist organically on the show. :)

American gods is a masterpiece,actors are extremely talented and good at theyre roles too the point where whenever I imagine Shadow or Wednesday,I always picture them as Ricky and Ian,the story itself is epic,and the show couldnt have adapted it any better...though nostalgic as I feel that this is the season finale,it was a great way too paive the way for S3,looking forward too it, admittedly my favorite show so far

I've seen tech boy 2.0 referred to as quantum which I think is interesting as quantum mechanics can be thought of as breaking the rules of classic physics as we understand it. This in turn refers to the earlier episode where Xie's father was talking about Bach breaking the rules in his music composition which then led Xie to creating his masterpiece by creating a computer program that could "break the rules". As such quantum is the culmination of his work.

Is Laura in love with Sweeney? Their side plot at times was more interesting than the main plot. I think they go well together and i hope she brings him back so we can get more of what we've been seeing between the two this season.

I am in full agreement, they have a very strong connection, no offense but Sweeney is better than Shadow in all aspects, I'm not sure if it's the intent of the show or the actor is just that good.

I'm confused because the actor who plays Mad Sweeney recently gave an interview saying that with his character's death the show can now focus more on Shadow, add that he just got cast as a lead on a new show, I thought that was it but they are clearly setting the stage for his return, so what gives? I think like a lot of people Mad Sweeney is their favorite character and Pablo continually knocked it out of the park with his performance, but what with the misdirect? Great episode, great season and great analysis!

Sweeney was great and I'm sad to see him go, but we have to accept that we live in a post GoT viewing world. Writers will kill off our favorite supporting characters just for the emotional impact.

@@lukemcgregor6969 That's definitely the case in GoT Season 8. Though I feel like Wednesdays betrayal of Laura and Shadow had to have an impact on the story. Sweeney's death was emotional, but was built up throughout his arc with Laura.

Well, I just read another interview with the author of the book on Entertainment Weekly and apparently Mad Sweeney will be back for season 3 and will have a substantial storyline with Laura. So that's good because he is a fan favorite!

Laura either uses the potion on Sweeny or....she uses it on herself and gives back the lucky coin to Sweeny yielding zombie Sweeny!!! She then torments him with “dead” jokes for the rest of the series.

I'll drop info here: according to the Twitter account of AG, Technical Boy 2.0 is called Quantum Boy

I love the use of the name Ainsel. As far as I know, it's from an old irish story about a boy who lives in a cottage with his mother and it's surrounded by fairies and such. When the boy doesn't go to bed like his mom tells him to, a fairy comes down the chimney to play and says she is "my own self" or "ainsel" for sure, and the boy says he is "my own self, too" and they play but the fairy gets hurt and starts crying. when the fairy's mom asks why her daughter who hurt her, she says "My own self!" and the fairy is like "if you hurt yourself you're just being silly" and drags her up and out the chimney. The boy listened to his mom after that terrifying sight. BUT ANYWAY. The name Ainsel means "My own self" which is great, he basically has an ID that says "Me."

If I hadnt watched break downs and spoilers, I wouldnt have understood a god damn thing in this episode.

I say the same, but pretty much the entire season. They need to tone down this "I'm a smart writer" thing. everything so slow and full of hints of may or may not happen in the future that I'm just slowly losing interest. specially after Mad Sweeney's death

For all the production problems this season was amazing!!!! kept quality and next season will be better

In the novel American Gods he is not revealed to be Baldr but in the Gaiman novella called Monarch of the Glen, it is revealed his name is Baldr, but as for him being the actual Baldr or a reincarnation, it might be or might not. there are points either way, and Gamin likes to confuse people. I'll probably do a video about it.

The sacrament performed by Bilquis can also be associated with Ash Wednesday.

Isn't she representing a false "god" like as in Christian context. It is a sin to worship false idols. Who is to say she isn't taking on the antithesis of Christ and put an upside down cross or satanic symbol on his forehead. She also did present the apple which is a tool of the devil. I think there was some snake iconography with her character which would be the serpent which presented the apple in the Garden of Eden. She has consistently taken the easy way out that benefited her, why would she suddenly help Wednesday? It seemed pretty clear that there are factions starting to form(old gods, new gods, Bilquiss(spelling?), Mad Sweeney/Laura, and Shadow left out on the limb dangling). I didn't read the books, but I def think MS is coming back, especially since he is pretty much everyone's favorite character.

I don't know about the "taking the easy way out" part. She's not a god of war, quite the opposite. She's stated in before that she'd rather have pleasure than war. Naturally, she'd try to distance herself from violence as it does not serve her any good, nor does it directly resonate with her essence. She's also the oldest God we've been introduced to in the series and in her own words, when Anansi was criticizing her for being a "dormant black god", she said, "suffering is not sacred." She's seen too much, been around too long. So, yes, of all the gods, she's the most likely to actually want peace and need peace. Wednesday, Anansi, Mr. World techno etc, to them the war is merely a game.

I didn’t get to see it. My stars sub ran out but I’m glad these breakdowns exist. I love this show because it really drives my love for different religions and practices. Great job as always.

This was a visually brilliant episode! I reckon you are right that Shadow will be in Lakeside for most if not all of season 3. And I reckon Laura will use Sweany's blood to finish the potion and use it on him, because his blood is infused with love for Laura. As for the rest of the characters I am not sure what will happen, they have veered so much from the book it is hard to tell. Shadow is Wensday's son. he stated he was a cheater a swindler a hustler a two-bit Hustler and a liar he did all of those things to shadows mom con her got pregnant and disappeared that's why she kept telling Shadow he's dead and gone when he asked where was his dad.

Love the symbolism in this show. Haven’t read the books but just might have to if a long wait until s03. Thought the choice of shadow’s alias was cool Micheal the arch angel was the leader of gods army against the forces of evil and ainsel is referenced in fairy mythology in a story about the boy of a widow and translates to own self. So with all the Christian references and indications that shadow is to lead Wednesday’s charge and with Sweeney’s previous episode with his ‘memories ‘ fighting Odin showing Odin to have ties with fairy law I think it ties in well. Also from the start it seemed obvious the relationship with Wednesday and shadow but I saw it as a duality that Thor was Odins sun and shadow is his moon.

Note that the new tech that tech boy is born from is quantum computers (someone mentions a quantum hack), as artificial intelligence was the previos version of tech boy's technology, and telephone was the tech boy from the flashback when we meet Thor. This is relevant because it looks like a new version of him apears every time an important technology break happens. In a scene where he is with his creator, he mentions "unlike you, I can be at two places at once", provably due to the nature of quantum computers, since their power comes from doing tasks simultaniously instead of iteratively. This is also how he could 'hack' all of the bank acounts. Nowadays to protect our acounts we use a number that comes from the multiplication of two huge prime numbers; to find out which number were used, the only exixting algorithm has to find the factorial. This process is so computationaly costly that all the computers in earth woul take the age of the universe to find the correct answer. But, due to the nature of quantum computers (and their capacity to operate in paralel), all acounts could be decoded in hours by one computer. In reality some algorithms are beeing developed both for using quantum computing and to protect from it, but there is still a big leap to make to get the hardware for it (although some quantum technology has allready seen the light).

They originally wanted more episodes, but they went over budget, so they had to cut a few. Ironically they fired the old showrunners partly because the suits thought they’d go over budget. Guess they went over either way.

I'm a big fan of American Gods, because I have always been fascinated with God's, demons, etc. Some of my favorites are: Shiva, Marduk, Amun-Rah, Horus & Jesus Christ. Other than that, the fact that you reserved yourself enough that you did not and do not spoil anything says a lot about you. The Name "Ainsel" was quite funny to look for, I've checked on wikipedia and this is what I found, I didn't read the novel but I think it might have some link: " My Own Self, Me A'an Sel' or Ainsel is a Northumbrian fairy tale collected by the folklorist Joseph Jacobs. A version of the tale appears in Scottish Folk Tales by Ruth Manning-Sanders. It is Aarne-Thompson type 1137 (Self Did It), similar to the encounter between Odysseus and Polyphemus,[1] and tells how a fairy is outsmarted by a human child through clever wordplay. A widow lived with her son in a cottage with many "Good Folk" (elves or fairies) living about it. One night her son would not go to bed, so she went to sleep on her own. A small fairy girl came down the chimney and told him that her name was "My Own Self", and the boy told her that he was "Just my own self too." They played together for a time, and when he stirred up the fire a spark landed on her foot and made her cry out. Her mother's voice came down the chimney, demanding to know what had happened, and the girl said "Just my own self" had burned her foot. I think new Tech Boy is like, the God of Artificial Intelligence. Which makes him the scariest Tech Boy yet. The reason I think this is because the quest to create true AI has often been likened to playing God, and the fear among many is that AI will surpass us in intelligence and we will be obsolete or controlled by them. Considering the themes of fear and the "creation being outside the control of the creator" it seems he's heavily AI-focused now. A deity able to control AI, plus a deity able to control the media, well, Mr. World has a hell of an arsenal right now.

Great episode breakdowns. If it weren't for these videos I would be incredibly lost. This is a series I'm going to have to watch a couple times to catch everything. I like the storytelling but I agree with some that it moves pretty slowly. I love the show so far though even so.

Very cool. I had early on started speculating on Shadow's importance and who he really was, and it seemed almost too obvious who his papa would eventually turn out to be. That's why I also entertained the thought that he was... something more. Not "yet another" god, but a very powerful and important concept of sorts.

Shadow has just realized he is a demigod and is coming into his power. It was him, not odin, that made it snow in season one. Wednesday was easing him into it, just as he told Anansi and Thoth. Yggdrasil is the world tree. Odin hung himself from it once to gain knowledge. Remember him telling Shadow he once hung on a tree three days for knowledge? Shadow has now completed his own ordeal with the world tree. He is now awake. He changed his ID and he looked at that cop in the eyes and made him believe it. His powers will continue to grow as he accepts that he has them.

Haha. That's one of the best parts of the book. In my review of S2E01 I mentioned that I was disappointed they left it out.

idk what y'all are talking about. it was a great episode, could've used a little more Mr. Nancy as always but it was both setting up a lot of cool story line from the book and also coming at it from different angles, directions and characters, so that even book readers who might know where its all heading cant exactly say how its getting there...sounds like good shit to me!and for those who felt lost good... don't forget the theme of the episode was chaos.

Prindizzle Foshizzle Starz adds it to OnDemand at midnight the day of airing. They actually do that for all their shows.

The Lakeside, and Mike Ainsel chapters are my favorite parts of the book. I hope the show does them justice.

Okay so the show revealed Shadow as Odin's son. But in the beginning of the season they were hyping up a war between the old Gods and the new. Why can't they give that to us. I wanna see some powers, some action. I wanna know what shadow moon's power is.... Now wait another year to have the show writers make us suffer and drag out something that seems simple! We all know shadow has powers ! Now show us- that's all I want

You could read and finish the actual book before next season.. Audio book even. You don't have to wait.. but if your looking for Avengers type super powers... it's not that kind of story. The Gods make things happen in abstract ways, not by holding out their hands and doing jedi tricks in plane sight. Even Ēostre killed the crops from her private home.

jusTheD alllevels it’s not that kinda story it’s more about how the gods in America went from being worshipped feared and loved making them mighty and powerful to being underhanded con men just to survive and the depths they will go to to become powerful again.

I agree, NOTHING HAPPENED. Barely anything. They just made it all in slow motion to drag it out which was annoying. Can they cut that out? It doesn't make it dramatic nor does it help the symbolism. This was definitely not finale worthy. Shit, sweeny dying was a better finale.

That was a nod to the twilight zone with rod serling. Rod serling took us into such things what is the mind ? What is really sight? WHAT IS REALITY?

Kaleah Collins I remember that episode of the twilight zone when there was a woman trapped in a city frantically running around but when the camera panned out, there was a little girl playing with her toy city.

I haven’t read the novel but I figured it out in season 1.

It was very confusing, thanks for going over it. Seemed like it spent the whole time going somewhere it never arrived at. I also don't really care for the episodes that focus on a single character's back story, I wish they would spread these stories over a few episodes in an interlaced fashion.

Was American Gods renewed for the third season already? Have they resolved their budget issues?

Yeah, not an answer.

There must of been some Dr Strange type reality warping going on when the police didn't recognise Shadow Moon. Must be his powers manifesting, changing his appearance as a self defense mechanism. Now on to season 3!!

What I wanna know is, if Mr World will turn out to be who he really is, as in the novel. Also, "Chaos" isn't referring to Christianity. It's referring to... well.. it's in the novel.
