American girl living in Malaysia hunts durian for a living 🇲🇾

We just went on a 4-days durian tour, visiting farms and factories that grow, produce, and export durian and its by-products.
We didn't expect to see other foreigners in the tour, and was surprised to learn that a lot of foreigners love durian! Here, we met Lindsay whom we found out later on, that she hunts durian for a living! How cool is that!? Sounds like a dream job to us.
She mentioned that eats durian almost everyday (jealous!). We had a great durian party by the river with the tour group, trying different types of durian: D24, durian kampung, durian musang king, black thorn, you name it! Check out our durian party!!

Durian is the best fruit in the world because it's an event. A perfect observation Steve. No other fruits but only durian deserves a party/gathering held in its honor. It's not the king. It's the freaking emperor of all fruits 😂

According to the Orang Asli elders I have met, Durian is the king of fruits because when it is in season deep in the jungle, all the creatures, great and small gathers... From the smallest insects, the reptiles, mammals from the smallest rodents to the greatest like the elephant... and Orang Utan to all the people in the region. I remember the days when we would travel up to a hundred mile trip just to get to the freshest durian we know... Nowadays, travel is so much easier

You can have durian for every meal of the day. For breakfast you can have Roti Jala with Lempuk (Durian Jam). For Lunch, how about rice with Sambal Tempoyak (Durian Paste). You can also have durian with sticky rice (Pulut Durian) for your teatime. For Dinner, Ikan Patin Masak Tempoyak (Fish in Durian Paste Gravy). For dessert, how about Cendol Durian? Durian Crepe? Durian Flavoured Icecream? Durian Tart? Endless possibilities with durian.

We in Sarawak and West Kalimantan eat durian flowers and unripe durian as well. Most of us simply love wild or jungle durians. Durian Susu and Durian Tembaga are the best durians from Serian district. Before cooking the durian flowers, we have to get rid of the pollen grains first otherwise the dish turns out to be jelly like.

Not reaĺly true. Many people in Southern Thailand prefer naturally felled durians. The harvested durians allow for longer travel times and shop display times since the durian ripens during transit or in the shop while the felled ones need refrigeration during transit. Unrefrigerated felled durians should be eaten in 3 days, after which the flesh become mushy.

Asian supermarkets in the west could not provide fresh durians due to technology in freezing and the fruit will crack below naturally. The nearest musang king importer i came across is miami fruits while browsing online. When westerners bring them home, it is brown in colour inside. It shld be white inside. Durians are white or golden depends on varieties.

Durian is best eaten fresh, i.e, right after open, and bester after it falls from the tree (that means have to eat it during harvest time). In Malaysia, durian season is July/August. Durian stalls u can find along the country roads and the drive in the countryside nearby the orchards, you can smell right inside your air conditioned car with all windows closed(yes, the smell of the durians fallen from the trees is that strong) . Durian has a bit of alcohol content, that makes some varieties a bit gassy/sour than the other and that sort of explained why it is so sinfully addictive. It is unlike any other fruits, durian is savoury. It is creamy, buttery, custardy with soft flesh on the inside and silky filmy coating on the outside. It’s like nature growing you panna cotta/creme brûlée on trees. Because of the gas it releases, my dad always reminds me to eat the durian quickly after open, otherwise it will turn sour, the longest i keep durian after open is overnight. Some varieties like musang king, if u keep it overnight the flesh will harden and not nice, while black thorn will still be soft and less gassy the morning after. With that said, i cannot imagine one eats frozen durians that have traveled half way around the world.

Isnt it dangerous to walk under a durian tree? I know they usually dropped at dawn or dusk but who knows.

There must be something wrong with me. I hardly saw any durian, let alone other seasonal local fruits, selling in my area this year. Only those stores that sells durian year round at kayangan prices.
