    I just remembered listening to this song when my husband past away last year of March. I was just sitting, staring blankly thinking my husband would have loved this song as much as I liked it when I discovered this and listened to it. It saddens me that the person i used to share things that I enjoy is no longer there to enjoy with me. This will always be my last song for my husband.

    lyrics : Sensitivity deprived I can't feel a thing inside I blamed my father in my youth Now as a father, I blame the booze I have become uncomfortably numb Who's ugly side is the ugliest Sensitivity deprived All my sympathy prescribed Who's hands are tied to a contorsionist I used to struggle in my youth Now I'm used to struggling for two I have become uncomfortably numb The lessons The lessons Are so much Are so much Less obvious The further you get from home The further I get from home How will you exist How will I exist Without consequence I'll let you know We were gentle to begin Then I pushed you around to break you in Now whenever I try to be clear with you I only end up feeling see-through I've tried, but you've won Comotose, like father like son The lessons The lessons Are so much Are so much Less obvious The further you get from home The further I get from home How will you exist How will I exist I don't want to know Blacked out, protected I just want you home I'll make new friends in the ambulance

    Feeling this on an emotional level. Working in the medical field for so long, knowing someone is going to die, or just knowing what is going to happen and knowing there's nothing you can do, or even people who just die arbitrarily without warning-you just accept it without much question. Sure, the relationships and friendships I build with my long-term and even short-term residents may be memorable, after a while, you just slowly start slipping into a rut of almost carelessness when it happens. It doesn't hurt as much as it used to. I have become uncomfortably numb.

    EMT here and same. Transporting someone to the nursing home or the ER or elsewhere that really has no good reason to be alive and suffering, with the only reason being that they don't have a DNR form. You know that someday soon, they're going to die, but right now they're alive. All they know is confusion and fear. It's so sad, and nursing homes are absolutely full of these people who just want death, but are being kept alive for Medicare money.

    Let me see... I was 20 years old. It was fall or early winter. Chances are I was very stoned. My new friend Allasandra knew I was a music dork and suggested we go. It may have been at the Pres House. I recall being impressed with the interplay between the guitars, the prog rock quality of the music, and that the vocals were WAY too quiet. Obviously I've never forgotten the band name or that experience. @@brendanfisher

    This is absurdly good! Long time fan of American Football. So much I could say about how wonderful this is! Here's my checklist: - Immaculately clean instrumental tone (read: telecaster). - swelling/crescendoed dynamics - Arpeggio's - Polyrythmn - Male/Female vocal harmonies - Highly polished structure - Midwestern Emo sensibilities - Math rock sensibilities - Lyrics that are relatable for the audience (most of us grown-ass adults with families, still coping with the lingering emotional baggage that made Mike's songs solid gold to us). - Horns. Thank God they kept this attribute record to record! Of course, there is more to it. But those are some good reasons to keep this record in high rotation.

    Don’t quite understand the complaints about Hayley’s voice. It’s pretty raw, just a bit of reverb and all that. It’s used in a pretty secondary role too, my favorite use of her voice is often when it’s just harmonizing

  • @DoniJames

    @DoniJames

    Not for me. Her voice is far too good to use as a 'secondary role'. I would rather hear her voice full up front then to hear bits and pieces of it here and there. It's just disappointing for me and a little underwhelming. But thankfully there are hours worth of her already put out into the world. So even though this wasn't for me, I could always go back to the P albums

    A formative part of my high school and college days involved a Kinsella or two. My niece loves Paramore. I'd knock it. We'd pick at each other's bands. We both sent each other this album in the mail. Arrived at each place, same day. The phone call afterwards was just two people laughing. My brother (jokingly) says: "You see? That sad bastard music is genetic!". AF was on his Spotify top list the next week. 😂 And my better half let my niece have her old Rainer Maria shirt. Polyvinyl is for the family.

    I can call American Football's LP3 a hymnal of contemporary urban decadence of the spirit. In "Uncomfortably Numb" and throughout the album in general the lyrical hero achieves a kind of enlightened desperation in which he finds joy in decadence of the spirit, proclaiming gentle defeatism against love and romantic observations and social routine whatsoever. To experience the decadence of the spirit is literally - to give in. I think the main feature of this album is that it remains astutely life-affirming while being profoundly defeatist in its mood and themes. It is the trademark feature of American Football, found and imprinted most expressively in this album. "Every Wave to Ever Rise" for example is an expression of self-giving love and devotion. The narrator discards himself and takes retreat in his beloved one with imposing, effortless, lazy sureness. I think it's useless or rather impossible to write about the smoothness of this album's flow. And I don't know what is even possible to write about and after the lines like: "Selfishness is inherited / Like skinny lips and tattoes", "I'm sorry for aging / Growing more and more disinterested in celebrity and politic / Unapologetically / Sorry for everything", "How will you exist (How will I exist) / Without consequence / I'll let you know", "Only you / No me", "Forgiveness is a mystery" and "I cried for you / For me / For strangers / I cried in every room / When will it end, relentless adolescence".

    Some calls, you forget within an hour, some calls, you'll never forget. Sometimes I lay awake at night and wonder how my patients are doing. The child with a high fever that I broke, the car crash victim that I stabilized c-spine on and drove to the hospital, the newborn in an isolette that I transported with a flight team. I wonder how they are and how I affected their lives.
