Given that players like Christian Wade and Jaryd Hayne have gone to the NFL and had success at running through teams, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind Jonah would have lit up the NFL in the late 90s/early 2000s had he gone there.

New Zealand is the number one country in the world of rugby for decades and decades, even though the rugby invented in Great Britain. Now for Jonah Lomu. He is my favourite winger. There are so many great and outstanding wingers in New Zealand but Jonah is unique. Features of him that makes him unique are: tall, heavy, massive legs, sidesteps, good fender, powerful and very fast. Very hard to tackle and bring him down, he can take on opponents and carry them.

Even in today’s time, the team every other team wants to measure themselves against and beat. No other team has achieved a consistent record similar however, Ex pat NZers, Pacific Island players and NZ coaches around the world have influenced and raised the bar in regards to the playing styles, techniques, consistency and belief to win. NZ is still managing to be consistent overall even though other countries i.e. England and Japan have the finances to incentivise and purchase top quality players in the professional era

The numbers thing is crazier than you think. You see in a few shots he’s number 3, which is a prop (essentially o-line). For his first few years coaches weren’t sure whether to make him the fastest prop ever or the biggest winger ever. In the end he dominated at both, but it worked better at wing.

11 and 14 are always wingers in 15 a side rugby union so comparable to a wide receiver/running back. Jonah was asked to play with an NFL team but, he declined and said he wanted to play for the All Blacks. Rugby is the national sport of New Zealand and we have a good tier system, where players start at club, then play nationally and then play international rugby. You must play in NZ, in order to play for the AB’s. Hey Kids can start as young as 4yr playing different versions of the game until they get to high school and they play the full version. There are only 5 million people here, so for such a small country we do pretty well. The M. New Zealand All Blacks are the best team in Rugby over their history. They have a history going back to 1905. However they aren't always the no one ranked side in the world. They do have the no one spot more than any other national side but I believe they are ranked no 2 atm. South Africa is ranked no one. South Africa is the second most dominant rugby nation in Rugby history I would think.

NZ (All Blacks) are definitely the best team (overall) in world rugby. The stats speak for themselves; in fact they are the most successful team in ANY code globally. South Africa currently hold the World Cup (even though NZ beat them in that competition) and are currently ranked No 1. in the world. NZ is currently at No. 2 and Australia is at number 3. In fact the Southern Hemisphere teams have dominated world rugby for some years now. NZ probably also plays the most attractive game, with lots of attacking/wide play, while some teams (like England) often play a tight, boring game, grinding it up with big forwards and hoping to be awarded a penalty and win with place-kicks.

The Backs- No.9 is the Halfback, no.10 First 5, no.11 Wing, no.12 2nd 5, no.13 Center, no.14 Wing, no.15 Fullback plus 8 reserves. New Zealand (Aotearoa) has been a Rugby nation 125yrs. It's National and International History are of World Record recognition, and has and always been the best Sports Team in the World. As of late their win Record would be 80%. Yes, Jonah was our Greatest Athlete, but even he knew as a Kiwi and All Black, he was playing in the Greatest Team to play Rugby. He was a Freak. Before Lomu, there have been fast and quick wingers of the All Blacks. Wingers are the cheaters of a rugby team. John Kirwan and many other AB wingers of past have always been quick off the mark, Fast, great steps, swirve, agile and excellent balance. John Kirwin I think change the size of wingers. He too was also big for a winger, quick etc I believe. BUT, Lomu mastered all those gifts, Also blessed with his size, speed, strength agile and flexibility. Lomu had them all. Here is what he had, You have number#1 &3 powerhouse of scrum #4or5 Height 2.0metres average, #8the biggest guy on the field and strong, #6 or 7- stamina, strength and fit and flexible, # 9- agility flexible, good vision, #13-quick, great defender and attacker, ability to break the Defense line #11-Quick, Fast & agile. Combine all these players, their abilities and capabilities, make that the Winger, YOU GOT JONAH. Size and strength of forward, fend of of a center, stamina of a number6 or 7, height of a 4 or 5, width of a 1 or 3, vision of a fullback. What a blessing to watch this guy live. Just amazing. Thank you for your talent. Which country is going to produce another Jonah Lomu, but diffrent position? I'd love to witness the next Global Rugby Super Star. Some fond memories of them Days. "KIA KAHA ABs". R.I.L BIG FELLA.

Jonah is nothing like Barry Sanders. When Barry got the ball no one had the slightest clue where he was going to go, not even his line. With Jonah you knew that he was going forward in as straight a line as possible. Jona ran 100M (110Y) in 10.8 and his predicted 40Y Dash speed was under 4.5s. That makes him half a step slower than Barry but he was carrying 62 more pounds. The Cowboys offered him a contract but he turned them down. Each position has a number. Players don't. It is so specific that #11 is always the left wing and #14 is always on the right. The only place that numbers get iffy is in the substitutions (#16-#23) yet even there the higher numbers will be the backs.

Lomu had a great step and sway. His balance for his size was freakish. Even in the clip above he has literally stepped past opponents only half to two-thirds his size and they barely get a hand on him if any. His one weakness was turning back and positioning for kicks, but he certainly didn't just truck the ball up straight unless he was hitting it up the guts one out from the ruck (where his job was to attract as many bodies as possible and create quick ball to be spread the ball out wide where there would now be more space).

@@dcbbot I didn't mean to imply that Jonah would never step around someone in his way. If you never saw Barry Sanders play you couldn't understand how much time he spent running sideways. On a play that the Lions only wanted 3 yards he would run 70 yards sideways, back and forth before turning upfield. Being the Detroit Offensive Line Coach had to be very frustrating job. He's supposed to ensure there aare blockers to clear Barry's way in front of him but until he got the ball no one knew where that was. Barry didn't even know where he was going to go.

the greatest player ever is subjective. for example, are we talking the best athlete, the most skillfull or the most influential player to ever play the game. its highly unlikely that one player is all three things. personally i choose not to form an opinion on the matter. lomu might be the best athlete to play rugby ever. but is not the most skillful or influential to ever play the game. would you ever consider a runningback as the greatest nfl player ever, when the qb position is so important to the game. i would guess that the best qb to ever play the game, would then be labelled the greatest nfl player ever. the nz all blacks are the kings of rugby and possibly the most successful professional team in the history of world sports.
