To give you some idea of how respected and impartial he is, he was allowed to referee a Welsh game, even though he is Welsh. This never normally happens. Many fans from around the world, whether New Zealand, South Africa, England, Scotland, know if Nigel was in charge, it was going to be a fair game.

Gotta love the bloke. Fair and respected worldwide. These blokes are huge but they totally do as he asks because they're MEN and understand they have boundaries to work within

In rugby a ref can destroy a contest if they don't undertand how the game flows and the big emotions a physical contest generates. Rugby loves Nigel because he got the best game out of the players.

a lot of refs are fair. what marks him apart is the lengths he goes to, to explain his decisions and the way he chats to the players. his humanity shines through in everything he does. in wales, he's a much loved personality

The last scene is because the video referee is only allowed to answer the question that Nigel asked, they are not allowed to rephrase the question. So, if Nigel asked "is there any reason I cannot award a try?" That is the question the video ref has to answer and why he worded his reply the way he did. Nigel did not ask "can I award a try?". That is a slightly different question. The ultimate and undisputable authority on the field is the field referee. Not the video referee.

I love this guy! Nigel is/was the best in the business. Every time my team played and he was reffing, I knew it would fair.

For the phone call one, I believe his radio link with the TMO (television match official) wasn't working so he had to call them on his mobile to confirm a try :P

You're right that his radio link wasn't working, but it was actually the TMO calling him, not the other way around. It was hella funny to watch when if happened though.

A great ref, it’s a shame he’s now retired from the game and now working on his farm.

Great video couldn't hear Nigel very well though to hear his comments. When we go to a major game, we can hire a 'Ref Link' which is an ear piece and we can hear the live ref chat with the players. It's so good to hear the live banter and hearing what Nigel's saying and watching it also one the huge screens is amazing... It certainly gets you more involved with the game it's so worth it... At 7 mins, I'm surprised he had to explain to that Halfback the basics about a Ruck ... several times. As a Halfback you'd expect him to know during a Ruck, when a ball was available or not.

Not only very fair, but also he didn't make empty threats. If he said he was going to penalise the next offence, he did.

you can see he gives a foot in height, but not an inch about the rules, and noone dares contest his leadership !! this guy is a legend for any decent referee !! 6:20", it is his bodycam, when he talks to the guys, he looks for the sky ^^

Great video, great ref, nothing whatsoever to do with it but just for your information and to keep you up to date with the Northern Hemisphere teams, England just beat Australia for the eighth consecutive time, and apparently, Ireland did okay too......

The Derek Bevan, butt, was confused. English is our 2nd language. The officials have to do it in English for most TV. S4C (Welsh Broadcasting channel is exempt)

He use to, he's retired now, but he would also ref local school boy rugby games in Wales. I mean 13 or 14 year olds with a handful making up the crowd.

Sadly missed now he has retired, some people felt he was a bit of a showboat but he made games better by making the players know exactly what he would tolerate. There are plenty of dark arts in Rugby that can slow play or stifle creativity, Nigel was great at putting a stop to that.

The key is he's fair when he can be fair and there is room for that. Also players know when he says it's your last chance he means it. Usually they'll behave after that if they want to stay on the field. Sorry I mean his house his field.

Hi Blake, very good video, but the sound of the videos you watch and want to show to us are much lower than your mic input level, which should be definitely reduced. When you are talking or laughing loud, it even distorts heavily. But still, keep 'em coming !

In the top games referees are obviously 'miked' up. When he was on the mobile phone the system had gone wrong and he had no communication with the TV referee so someone ran on with the phone.

He phoned the 4th ref....had a problem with direct link, he didn't answered a personal call.

FYI…..in rugby you have to Call the referee- ref/referee or sir.

Piece culling an Italian soccer ref had retire age 45

Nigel Owens…….arguably the best and most popular referee the sport has seen. He came out gay a while back. Didn’t affect the affection the players, the sport, or the commentators.

Sorry, they are not rules. In Union, they are agreed laws the nation that played them agree to it.

I know they’re trying to be as professional as possible and all, but I find NFL refs are really wooden. It’s sort of annoying.
