Matatu comes from 'Mapeni Matatu' means three pennies, which is what Kenyans used to pay as far back in the 70's

A matatu is the name that's given to all the public service vehicles i.e the buses,the 14seater vans,all...whether having art or not. The public service vehicles that have art,loud music in them are called Nganya. But all are still matatus
U talked about the "matrix " in one of your last videos in USA. In this video u c a "Matrix " matatu. Like the bible the say,"the power is in the tongue." Salute 💯

Wow, the matatus have evolved! I lived in Nairobi around 20 years ago and back then Matatus where all the size of a minibus like the one passing by in 06:38 . Kibaki the president back then, had made a new law, that all matatus had to have a yellow line in the middle and only 11 people (as far as I remeber it was 11 ...) were allowed to ride them. The loud music has always been a thing, also with the small ones back then. Before Kibaki, the matatus where in all sizes and the people allowed on where limitless, so it was also more dangerous, if the driver wanted to make more money, he would allow more people on then there were seats, and they would stand inside or hanging out the side door. - I hope you can understand my english.

If you look around you'll find matatus with local Artist names and images. Like the white matatu she was standing next to had a image of mzee ojwang a kenyan comedian who passed away. And there are many with images of other popular kenyans. You have a matatu written OG on the wind screen and has a khaligraph Jones image at the back. You have a red sauti soul matatu! But there are not many popular kenyans around. Unless you want to put politicians on your matatu as well! But there are many matatus. So do they get like 20 matatus with khaligraph images to prove they like locals as well? No they Can't . Remember the competition is about creativity and originality. So naming your matatu khaligraph while there are other matatus called khaligraph isnt a good look. So you get names from outside. From movies and shows. From cartoons. As long as it makes it easier for people to differentiate your mat from others. You get?? It's not about not loving your own!
@user-mv9zi3qc6b

@@richardray2680 Well to me it is not a good look when foreign imagery and art is dominating your country because in those foreign countries you won't find them excessively glorifying what is not theirs like that be it in art or otherwise! You might say it is just mats but...come to think of it, it speaks volumes!
@user-mv9zi3qc6b

@@richardray2680 Well what I said is the truth and I stroke a nerve. There's a lot of art all over Africa to draw inspiration from but no... American stuff has to dominate. It simply shows the mindset of the people. No wonder Ruto did you like that!!!!
@richardray2680
7 күн бұрын
@@user-mv9zi3qc6b There is a lot of inspiration to draw from but the mat industry is basically for the teenagers . Folks decorate the mats according to what the teenagers are into. And hip-hop is something that is dominating entertainment all over the world. Especially American hip hop and American movies. So that's where they get their inspiration from. But it does not mean they don't value their own culture or African art. In fact if you get in these mats the music you'll hear most often is Kenyan hip hop and Nigerian and south African music. Which shows how much they love African music as well as art. And no what you said didn't strike a nerve. I do not get affected by such comments. I find them interesting and educative. But honestly I don't see anything wrong with Kenyans getting inspiration from African Americans or other blacks from around the world and showing appreciation for their art and culture. Don't African Americans and blacks in the diaspora get inspiration from Africans as well? If it was white celebrities and European culture being celebrated on these mats then I'd have a problem. But not this!!

Kenyans have a lot of decolonising they need to do. How she gon' so casually call a random chinese guy she sees on the street a ''brother''? Disgusting and embarrassing. Then there is the obsession with white Jesus/Mary, but that's a whole other conversation I'm not trying to have in a comments section. When Coop asked if Kipchoge is on any Matatu it just hit me that no Matatu celebrates ANY local people, even the Mau Mau..... that's sad

@@Layla_n It's not normal, it's mental colonisation. I'm not bothered by them having foreigners on the Matatus from their favourite TV or Movie shows, BUT celebrating the same figures the colonising missionaries brought to the continent to brainwash Africans does rub me the wrong way.

@@enriquekings9099 You say racism isn't a thing in Kenya, yet tribalism has affected Kenyas politics for a long time even up to now has it not? I will never stop saying Kenyans need to decolonise because I care for the mental health of my people. I'm tired of seeing the depiction of white people as holy in Kenya, I'm tired of seeing them still using British education to teach our kids, I'm tired of these pro western corrupt puppet Presidents/Politicians getting into office. A lot of Kenyans are physically free but mentally enslaved still. All these bad things happening in Kenya is self inflicted and it's time they realise that, they need to wake up.
