The price for that gratification seems to be hurting people who genuinely want a connection with that abusive person. I was walking my sons home from primary school may years ago, when they were, say, 10 and 7, and some slightly older girls were walking ahead of us; we could hear them speaking very profanely ahead of us. When one of the girls loudly said “fucking asshole”, I had to step in. “Oy,” I said. “Sorry,” said the girl. “So you should be,” I said. “We’re Australians. I'm an American son older than both of these dads. My old man barely drank, didn't swear, and never strictly speaking punished us. When we screwed up, he would get quite. The following weekend, he'd wake us up about 7 am, and we would start a project. Clean the gutters, spend the day running a rototiller, build a fence, paint the house, clean the garage, wash the windows. And if we didn't have a project, the old neighbor lady always needed something done. Our house was modest, but with three rambunctious sons, it was always neat as a pin.
