1642, Charles the 1st believed Kings ruled by the divine right of God. So when Parliament voted against him wanting to raise taxes to start a war King Charles dissolved Parliament had some of its members arrested and did his own thing. Parliament raised an army of the people and The English Civil War ensued 1642-1651 with Parliament winning, chopping off the King's head, doing away with the monarchy but as stated above, Oliver Cromwell became a tyrant and when he died a monarchy with powers much curbed by Parliament was agreed.

One thing that you might find fascinating is the reason we have a Royal Navy and a Royal Air Force, but not a Royal Army. This is because the Army is desended (for want of a better expression) from the New Model Army developed by Oliver Cromwell and the Parliamentarians who faught against the Royalists during the English Civil War. Individual Army Regiments however can and do use the term "Royal" in their names, such as The Royal Artillery; The Royal Scots; The Royal Welsh Fusiliers.

Interesting side note. When the Queen gives laws royal assent, it is done in Norman French. From Wikipedia : The granting of royal assent to a supply bill is indicated with the words "La Reyne remercie ses bons sujets, accepte leur benevolence, et ainsi le veult",[5] translated as "The Queen thanks her good subjects, accepts their bounty, and so wills it." For other public or private bills, the formula is simply "La Reyne le veult" ("the Queen wills it"). For personal bills, the phrase is "Soit fait comme il est désiré" ("let it be done as it is desired"). The appropriate formula for withholding assent is the euphemistic "La Reyne s'avisera" ("the Queen will consider it")

The Queen has substantial powers, but is no doubt totally aware of royal history. While the British tend to be a polite bunch, the last monarch that “overstepped the mark” faced a long drawn out civil war resulting in his head being separated from his body, which no doubt ruined his day! Much of the tradition of the UK parliament still echoes that time, particularly the slamming of the door in the face of the Queens representative (black rod) when he delivers the invite for the members of the House of Commons to visit the House of Lords for the Queens speech.

That includes the aristocracy, whole of the military, the legal system, as well as most parliament, the Inland Revenue, most of the government, most of the civil service (who serve unwittingly) and a large part of the populace. Hence she is above the law, as it's Her Majesty's Courts, Crown Prosecution, and Her Majesty's Police Forces ... Because she's above the law and it's her Royal Prerogative to permit or disallow any discussion about her powers in parliament, you'll Never hear a challenge to her position as the Monarch. You have rights as a subject, guaranteed to you by the Monarch, but she has prerogatives instead of rights, which are not subjected to constraints of the law. In Saudi Arabia women were not allowed to drive and when the King of that country visited the Queen, she drove him around her Estate - she doesnt drive like Miss Daisy either. Now women are allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia. During WW2, the Queen was in the military and drove ambulances and can fix engines - she was a good mechanic. Let's say _hypothetically_ (can't stress that enough) she uses her power and all of a sudden, prices and taxes are down, wages are up, the economy is great, and the general happiness of the nation's citizens rises. Would it still damage the monarchy? Cause ultimately it's the people that decide whether or not that institution has any real power, but if the people suddenly benefitted massively from that institution using its power, would the people still have the same animosity for it, or would public perception change for the better? I always wondered about that...🤷🏻

Hitler got the German army to swear an oath to him and though the Queen has German blood i think i know who i would like to see the military swear an oath to of the two .

We all know most politicians are corrupt with there own petty interest but if we were against the wall as a country we would support our great Queen if she ever felt the need to. I actually believe she should be given the title of Queen Elizabeth the Great as she has been an outstanding Queen and monarch to her people over her 70 years of service, I cant think of anyone who posses such powers but acts so honourably for such a length of time. But knowing that there is a super power that will act if politicians become extremists and work against the common weal of our nation is comforting. Hey Ladies, The Queen and her media team have always given a no comment to anything thrown at the Queen in the media. However that changed recently as the Queen felt she needed to respond to a number of serious allegations made by Megan. Although the response from the Queen was fairly standard saying that wasn't the way she remembered things in relation to race and bullying claims and she was sorry if Megan felt that way. The Queen has great soft power within world leaders. She's very well respected throughout the world as I guess you would be after 70 years of power! The newly elected prime minister's first job is to go and see the Queen as she must approve him or her. It's a formality really. The prime minister has a weekly audience with the Queen in private where according to many past prime ministers a franc exchange of views over suggested law changes, new laws or world events are exchanged. Many former PM's say she's a great sounding board as she's seen a lot in 70 years!!

We are far from the days of monarchy having absolute power that they can actually *use*. It's a very delicate balance, but The Queen has managed it with grace for 70 years. I'm so proud of our Queen. Many knock the monarchy, but she offers us great stability and carries huge diplomatic power. She doesn't hold state banquets for the laughs... The subtle politics and currying of favour that happens between heads of state and political leaders, doubtless keeps the country's wheels greased on the world stage. We have such a lot of history, and there are so many nuances within our current system which have been picked up and evolved in that time, leading to the way things are today. And honestly, although it sounds like there are no checks and balances in the Queen's powers... Even our constitution is unwritten... There absolutely *are*. But they are based in our history and traditions and the power of the people. Great video again both, thank you 😊😊

The Monarchy has constantly evolved over the whole history of the UK but the 17th century was a big turning point with Oliver Cromwell & the Civil War which ended with the beheading of Charles 1 and the power of Parliament being established even though Cromwell became rapidly unpopular and the Monarchy was reinstated but with some controls of power.

In regards to all criminal law the Monarch is above the Law, mainly because all proposed laws have to be given what is called Royal Assent, after which it will become a law. Also the higher courts are called Crown courts, so it would be the Crown vs the Crown, however the Monarch is not immune to being taken to a civil court.

Hi guys, glad you got the subtlety of HM's hidden powers that she doesn't use. Yes, she has a lot of power but it's the fact that she doesn't use it that makes it more powerful. I was young when she was crowned, I remember the day well because I was confined to bed with German measles. I now see her getting old and becoming unwell and feel a little concerned with who will replace her when the time comes. As to keeping out of politics, yes, she does, unlike a certain "royal couple" who live in the US that have lied and dealt a great deal of hurt to the royal family with their lies and antics. They haven't harmed the royal family, only themselves and most people here dislike them immensely. There are a few anti royalists in the UK but they are few, most of understand her pace in the British constitution and respect it.

Completely true, my bothers best mate is a barrister, he said many years ago that the Judge in the crown court exercises the powers of the queen or the crown, so in brief if she walked into one of her crown courts and a Judge even attempted to pass judgement on her the law states they should immediately be arrested for contempt of court and imprisoned immediately with length of sentence to be decided by the queen herself which could be anything she wanted. This has never happened and probably never will, but there has been drafts and discussions by legal experts in the crown court behind closed doors it would probably be 30 days incarceration and Permanente removal of any involvement in the British courts and all titles removed permanently for judging against HRH as one of her Judges.

Its not so much power its the respect she has gathered over her reign. Unfortunately her health isnt great right now, or maybe a good dodge not to go to cop26. Id rather have a constitutional monarchy than a president it provides stability above the political scene. She must have the best political mind on the planet. Given her weekly meetings with the current serving prime minister, who to a person found she was a great help. As all those meetings are secret between the two of them. From Churchill to Boris no matter whether they are royalist or republican have the greatest respect for her. As a guess the change in powers could have started in the Edwardian era around 1902-1910. The main push though would have been during the queens reign after the second world war and the end of the age of deference. Ive only seen her once as a kid in 1977 when she visited Peterborough where i live, it was during her diamond jubilee, i think 2023 is her platinum jubilee!

Pre 2010 the Queen always officially dissolved parliament with royal prerogative, but in her reign she has never dissolved the UK parliament without the advice/consent of the current PM. Interestingly in Australia however in the 70s I believe, there was so much unrest in the country that the Queens powers to dissolve parliament without the agreement of the Australian PM were used through the Queens Australian representative who does the Queens duties in Australia.

The biggest shift in the loss of power for the current monarchy in my opinion started with George 1st. Some might argue it was the civil war, but the glorious revolution of William of Orange restored the majority of the monarchs powers that Charles 2nd and James 2nd did not have. George 1st was German at heart and really had little interest in Britain, so allowed the creation of the Prime Minister who did many of the day to day responsibilities that were traditionally the monarchs. By the time George 3rd came to the throne who was at heart British and interested in being a British monarch the PM was well established and impossible to remove politically. Over the reigns of the Georgian Kings their influence diminished greatly to the point they were a joke. When Queen Victoria was a young girl it was already noted that power was shifting from the nobility towards the common people globally (French revolution), so as a young girl Victoria was paraded around the country to introduce her to the common people. By the time the 19th century reforms of parliament got into full swing Queen Victoria was popular enough among the common people that there were no big calls to remove the monarchy completely. Victoria's son Edward continued the good work to make sure that they were popular with the people.

To be more precise, the change occurred after the Cromwellian era which ended in 1660 but not immediately as the return of Charles II simply restored the status quo which had existed under his (beheaded) father, Charles I. The change to a constitutional monarchy occurred as a result of the 'Glorious Revolution' of 1688 which deposed the last of the Stuart kings. The Bill of Rights of 1689 appointed a new king and queen, weakened the powers of the monarchy and strengthened those of Parliament. Prior to 1688, James II had dismissed the English parliament and had been ruling England by decree for three years. Scotland was, of course, an independent kingdom at that time with the same monarch but with its own government, parliament and laws.

@@karenblackadder1183 That's right. Even before 1999, when devolution came into force in Scotland, there were separate laws which meant that new laws and amendments to existing laws applying only to Scotland had to be debated in and passed by the UK Parliament in London - at best irrelevant to the vast majority of MPs and a waste of parliamentary time and, at worst, a means of non-Scottish MPs interfering in Scottish-only matters. Devolution fixed that issue: now someone needs to solve the 'West Lothian question' which allows Scottish MPs to vote on non-Scottish matters but I'm not holding my breath.

The biggest single check to any kind totalitarian, non democratic take over of the UK government is the simple fact that the the loyalty of the military and police do not ultimately lie with the government. The ultimate "checks and balance" for abuse of power. Plus... if the Crown gets too uppity and corrupt? We chopped one Kings head off, so that keeps them in line too. Long live the Queen.

The monarch cannot commit a crime as they are the Fount of Justice with all laws constitutionally originating from them. Therefore if the Monarch does something, even mowing down everyone in Trafalgar Square with a machine gun, it is legal. This rule only applies to the Monarch, other members of the Royal Family do not have this protection. Both Prince Charles and Princess Anne have been convicted of crimes. OK, only traffic offences but still. Also, committing any serious crime is the sort of thing a modern day Monarch would only be able to get away with once. In practice, they would likely be found mentally unfit and their heir would take over and be forced to accept changes to prevent something like that happening in future. In regard to appointing the Prime Minister, the last time a Monarch went against the will of Parliament was very early in the reign of Queen Victoria. It was a dog's dinner and she never tried it again. I know about Australia and Goudhurst Whitland. The Governor-General actually sacked him. The GG is nominally the Queen's representative but, in actuality, she appoints them on the advice of the Australian PM That mess was about internal Australian politics, nothing to do with the Queen.
