I am Canadian but have Scottish heritage on my fathers side and to help ya out with the Scottish/British label of how some identify within the UK and for those who identify with their UK based heritage I'll share my late grandmothers favourite phrase. Oh I was brought up with that saying . I’m Scottish but my grandfather was born in Canada, Black Dimond, Calgary. We have amazing photos with Mounties standing with Argentine gaucho, who had come with my family because they had settled in Argentina after leaving The Falkland Island’s, way back.we have photos of the family in Troikas in the Canadian snow. There upsetting photos of a big group of men in WW1 uniforms with a message on the back saying Charlie and friends, you can’t help to wonder who made it home. There’s many more I must let Black Dimond have copies of these pic’s.

I’m a Canadian Ex-Pat. The Scots are a wonderfully warm and welcoming, proud bunch of folks, second to none. I’ve worked in a lot of countries in the world, but Scotland is one spot where I could live permanently without any reservation. It’s a beautiful country, with welcoming friendly folks. Some of the best times I’ve had here is backpacking in the Highlands or fly fishing on the many rivers. For any history buff or history nerd, it’s an amazing place. The fact that I’m not Scottish at all but do play the pipes makes it way easier to make friends here.

Thankyou again for another great video. My mums best friend was Scottish, she was possibly the friendliest, and funniest person I’ve ever met. My favourite story I heard about her. Was the day she went into Labour with her daughter. They gave her gas and air to manage the pain, but she took a bit too much, and got high on it. She then started dancing down the corridor, after the midwives and nurses had managed to pin her down, she gave birth to a healthy girl, but when shown her daughter, she said “Oh what a lovely baby whose is it?” She had no memory of giving birth at all 😂🤣

I still remember a recruitment officer friend reading my resume back in the 90's, & telling me to change my nationality from 'Scottish' to 'British'. She said it would look bad to employers...that I would appear to be a nationalist! I argued the toss at the time... my family is Scottish through & through, I was born in Scotland....I'm Scottish! My university experience is nearly 40 years ago (St Andrews) and I agree with most of what he says I agree with. But it also applies very much to central Scotland rather than the whole country. The Isles, the Highlands and the southern part of the country in the Borders aren't all like that, there are parts which are right but I wouldn't apply it all to the whole of Scotland. There are parts of the country where people are a lot quieter.

The Scottish vs British thing comes up a lot. Mostly it's down to the person but there's also a big independence movement in Scotland and you'll find those who want to remain part of the UK usually identify as British and those who don't as Scottish. Naturally this isn't 100% true all the time but it's a fairly safe bet. Best thing to do is just to ask each person and that way you offend no one.

If I'm asked, I'll say I'm Scottish but that doesn't mean I'm in favour of independence but I respect everyone's opinion on the subject. I'm very superstitious, my whole family are, right down to not cutting our nails on a Sunday because its bad luck lol I've never been a drinker, I just never acquired a taste for it. The other things he was right about is the spitting on the Heart of Midlothian which must confuse people who don't know the history of it and lots of people really do refer to us as Scotch, it's really annoying lol

10:46 The Victorian-era Police Station which was the equivalent of the Tolbooth was built on the steep slope down to the Cowgate - the cells on the lowest level were notoriously unpleasant - dark, cold and dank. It was said that drunks and vagrants would deliberately walk far enough west or north to avoid being in the High Street Police District after nightfall.

I was told how welcoming and lovely everyone in Scotland was recently, a tourist was trying to get somewhere which was a little difficult to explain, I said “I have ten minutes to spare, I’ll just take you” , I didn’t really think about it but it seems it’s not like that everywhere in the world.

Very good show, loved it, good video too. It only occurred to me while watching, in the 90's Billy Connelly did a 6 episode programme called Billy Connellys World Tour of Scotland, I Googled it and it is available on DVD but in the UK it is region 2, I don't know if you are able to play region 2 DVD's, I know that the US is Region 1, its available on Amazon but I don't know if it would be available in the US, I watched it when it was shown and it was very informative, well worth a look.

My first paternal ancestor came to this country in 1646 from Scotland at age 18. He was indentured for 7 years to pay off his passage. After his indenture was paid he was given 10 acres of land in Virginia and 10 English pounds. He worked the land, got married had children and bought more land and sponsored other Scott's to come to this country. We have fought in every war from the Revolution to the present. We are VERY proud to claim Scottish heritage. Tom Boyte GySgt. USMC, retired Vietnam 65-66/70-71

While we are British we are also proud of our heritage, the Scots and the Welsh have fought hard for their countries in the past, speaking as a Welsh person. Like Wales,Scotland are very proud of who they are. Some people from foreign countries tend to think everyone in the UK are English, nothing would annoy us more. If your not sure where in the UK someone is from say British. Scotland have a lot of regions with their own dialects. I noticed that until recently Braveheart was America's only introduction to Scotland, and maybe Billy Connolly. I am glad you are learning more about the UK. For some lovely viiew's of South Wales Checkout Absolute History's "king Arthur's secret castle in South Wales". Love your reactions.
