American Bandstand 1970 -Rate A Record- If You Do Believe In Love / Gimme Dat Ding

Музыка

Airdate: May 30, 1970
We have an actual future hit on the Rate-A-Record segment today!
While the Tee Set, as Dick mentions, did have a big hit with “Ma Belle Amie” reaching #5 back in March, “If You Do Believe In Love” would not chart in the top 40. The novelty record “Gimme Dat Ding” (#44 today) will go all the way to #9 on July 18. (The judges got it right!)
As you can see, both the dress code and age requirements have changed dramatically over the last couple of years. Our (older) judges today are Linn Sachman and Sidney Herback and our scorekeeper is Jennie Bern. The prizes have come a long way too (sorry good people of Ross Electronics) with Cool-Ray Polaroid Sunglasses and His or Hers Westclock Watches….Nice!
Dancers: there a lot of new faces here in Season 13 and many of the dancers are from out of state competing today in the ’70 dance contest. The most recognizable regulars are (a very suave looking) Don Sanuskar & Pat Dickinson on the largest riser during the first song. Pat would be Don’s regular partner until he left the show in 1974.
…..And in music news, in 2 weeks (June 13) The Beatles will hit #1 for the last time with the song “The Long and Winding Road” and in 35 days (July 4) Casey Kasem will launch the ‘American Top 40’ countdown show on 7 stations across the country. “Gimme Dat Ding” will be #11, and the “Long and Winding Road” will be #8.
The top 5 songs on the first show will be:
No. 5, "Band of Gold," Freda Payne
No. 4, "Ride Captain Ride," Blues Image
No. 3, "Ball of Confusion," the Temptations
No. 2, "The Love You Save," Jackson 5
No. 1, "Mama Told Me (Not to Come)," Three Dog Night

I loved The Pipkins, "Gimme Dat Ding". Of all the folks dancing to it in this clip, one girl in the crowd, GOT IT. She was dancing like they did in the 1920's. Either she's REALLY good, or somebody taught her this dance step. Whichever the case, she got it.

Of the two rated songs, The Pipkins fared better than the Tee Set. The Pipkins was a British duo of songwriter Roger Greenaway and famed session vocalist Tony Burrows. "Gimme Dat Ding, " their best known hit for Capitol Records, reached #9 in Billboard Magazine's Hot 100 playlist. The Tee Set, fronted by the late Peter Tetteroo, was from Delft, Netherlands. "Ma Belle Amie," with lyrics sung in French and English, was their best known hit. "If You Do Believe in Love" was the follow-up US release for Collosus Records, climbing no higher that #81 on the Hot 100 list.

ABs, ABs, all I see are ABs!!! Lol But seriously, this was a great clip from the "groovy set". Now on to the specs, ie: my "geeky observations" LolFirst off, both songs, IMO, are HORRID!!! Lol another example of "I had to have been there" because "Gimme Dat Ding" was a Top 10 hit, as Aaron pointed out. Ugh, the things people walk into a recording studio with sometimes! Lol And judging by the way the kids danced to that song, I really "had to have been there" because the energy level went waaaaaaay up! The first song's lead singer was quite out of tune trying to reach the notes during the chorus of the song, it was grating on the ears!I know this is from the same ep as the Simon & Garfunkel clip you uploaded a while back, so this is from the "last" archived ep until '75 give or take. I'm still wondering if the other AB sign was still on the far right of the set like it was during the first half of this season.I see our homie Don doing his thang on the back riser with Pat. But he looked a bit confused with what to do on The Pipkins song, the just gave up and made the best of it by doing a little shake thingy. Don, that was hilarious, hopefully you remember this moment and can share what was going on in your head! LolAaron, as always, what can I say?

Man Kevin, I love how you get into this. I think the first song was not good, maybe a hair above bad, but just because they had the Ma Belle Amie hit before and Don & Pat made it work...I give it a 56. Gimme Dat Ding....I actually remember hearing that when I was a really little kid with my dad on the car radio (a few years after it came out) so maybe I’ll give a few nostalgia points. The piano was different, but seems different in a weird way here in 1970....still I thought it was a fun song.....I give it an 80. Now......where’s my watch and sunglasses?! Ha ha ha

Cathy was 16 in 1970, 15 in 69 when she danced with 20 year old Robert Zane, who never ereturned to AB...I think he was too old to be dancing with a 15 year old...John Minor was her partner in 1970 and he was a reg that year. The key to who is who is to watch the cameraman...he knows to highlight people in Rate a record, the roll call or spotlite dance and seldom makes a mistake...tho he did with Nancy Delky and Karen White, following dancers who looked like them.
