American Bandstand 1968 - TOP 10 - Love Is Blue, Paul Mauriat & His Orchestra

Airdate: February 17, 1968
Here’s a “pretty song” to cap off a chaotic year just as it began the chaotic year of 1968. Mauriat’s cover of “L' Amour est bleu” is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for the 2nd of 5 weeks in a row today. The song will go on to be the #2 song of 1968 (“Hey Jude” was #1) and the 12th most popular song of the decade.
While it seems some of the dancers are struggling a bit to dance to it, I think Famous Hooks & Jenny Nichols (1:16) and Don Sanuskar & Maureen Cohen (shown briefly on the right at 1:29) have the right idea partner dancing to the song. Also spotted dancing here are Peggy Waggoner & (her then-boyfriend) Mark Reinglass (0:32), Rick Bach (1:25), Stan Soburn (1:31), Forrest Hutchins (2:01), Sondra Gomez (2:15), Theodosia Dayton (2:42) and Roberta Simon on the top riser.
Love is blue: a toast to all those who didn’t make it to 2022 with us including 60’s artists Michael Nesmith, Billy Hinsche, Keith Allison, Charlie Watts, Jay Black, Don Everly, B.J. Thomas, Wanda Young (Marvelettes) and Mary Wilson (…and Phil Spector :|)
This’ll wrap it up for 2021. Thank you to @dancer don, our resident Bandstand dancer, for all of his insights and comments, @Andrew Haberman for colorizing several clips and episodes, @jthyme for sharing several of these episodes (including the one today), Uncle George for the rare video clips he’s shared, and to all of YOU for your views, likes, and comments this year. I hope you’ve enjoyed watching as much I’ve enjoyed posting.
Have a Happy Holiday, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Stay safe, keep on dancin’, and I’ll see you in '22!

Every time I hear this song it takes me back to the summer of 1968 sitting in the back seat of my dad's metallic light blue Cadillac convertible (top down), with my Mom and Dad (pre-divorce) in the front seat on our way to the Kansas City Plaza, with this song playing through the car's stereo complete with back seat "reverb speaker". A time and a song I hold dear to me.

@@jenniferdjaslowskj993 Most of the kids looked unsure how to dance to it. I remember this beautiful song well. My 7th grade crush, Sara Greenwood, invited me to her Dance Class. We had a wonderful time. I didn't step on her toes. This song I think went best with fluid swoopy waltzy moves; and so fit the 'traditional' Dance Class well.

On April 3, 1968 for my 7th birthday I received the #1 45 and pop hit record "Love is Blue" by Paul Mauriat and his orchestra (of which I requested) as I was already a big fan of the music of the day listening to WKNR AM (Keener13) when I could. I was also a big fan of the American Breed hit "Bend Me Shape Me" but hadn't thought about requesting it for my birthday. I still have the record.

"Love is Blue" is one of my favorites from '68, a nice diversion from all the nastiness that's going on and still lies ahead for us. Famous and Jenny are showing us some of the moves that won them the dance contest a few weeks earlier. As I am writing this, the Decades network is paying tribute to Mike Nesmith with its weekend Monkees binge. My favorite songs from him are "You Just May Be the One" and "Listen to the Band". A talented musician and a fine deadpan comic. We just lost Joe Simon who was mainly a '70s artist but got his start in the '60s. Finally, best wishes to everyone during the holidays.

Just a innocent story of my memory of this incredibly memorable classic..when it came out I was 14..when I first heard it I fell in love with it, rushed out and bought the 45..played it over and over again..and when alone, call me silly, but I would dance, or try to, like a ballerina.. I would imagine dancing in front of a audience as I danced and would slowly make my turns to the music..and I swear I could see their faces and all .. even at the ending would bow as gracefully as i could to my make-believe audience..what a magical time that was ..❤🕊️🌌❤

I loved the way Mad Men used this song during the final scene of the episode set during MLK's assassination. Don Draper is on his balcony looking out at the city as riots break out on the streets. It was the perfect juxtaposition of civil strife and beautiful music, a lot like 1968 itself. I was 6 in 1968 but I remember RFK's and MLK's assassinations very clearly. This song was my brother's favorite song when he was a kid. Thanks for doing all this and making this an oasis from the troubled world. Keep up yhe good work Aaron. Don, thanks for your insight on these clips as well as Peggy's insights as well. Missed seeing her on these comments. Thanks for all the others that have brought obscure clips, some colorized. Most of all, everyone have a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Happy New Year as later today we will have an early Christmas with our new granddaughter. Take care and peace!

Hey Aaron! Man, when instrumentals could be hits! I always liked this song. It had the feel of, it could be a song from a movie, or used in a commercial. Lovely laid back feel, very airy & light. I remember first hearing this in the 90s on the oldies radio station here in NYC on a '68 countdown they were doing & it captured my attention. Great song, great dancing from the kids here as well. And what a diverse Top 10 on this episode, so many different artists & genres all in one countdown, never again to happen... maybe one day that diversity will come back to the charts. Hope all is well as always Aaron. Being essential workers like you & I is getting a little strange again. Stay safe buddy & thanks for this one!!!

I agree Kevin. Another great Top 10 list here. I’d heard “You” before, but I’m not as familiar with it as the other 9 (good song) All of the others are classic, household names. Yeah, it feels like we are starting all over again with the virus. I’m optimistic that by next year this will all just be a bad memory. You stay safe too Kevin.

Just wondering: you know those Dr. Pepper commercials which ran on Bandstand during the winter? Where people were encouraged to warm up some Dr. Pepper on a cold winter day/night, and then put a lemon slice on the glass, and try it? Wondering if anyone out there tried it? I did, and it's actually pretty good!

Great instrumental from Maestro Mauriat. Have the 45 and album. Interesting to see Marvin Gaye's "You" in AB's Top Ten whereas on the trade's charts it barely hit the Top 30. Also poignant to see Otis' biggest hit listed as we lost him and four original members of the BarKays months earlier. That said looking ahead to 2022!

Hi Kevin, I agree with you. While my collection of Mauriat's arrangements is not as diverse as yours, he was one of the great composer/arranger/orchestra leaders of its time. Along with his compatriot Michel Legrand, and other European peers such as John Barry, James (Hans) Last, Bert Kaempfert, ... he defined what was known in the States and Canada as "Beautiful Music". Peace be with you, Ciao, L

I don’t know it was Frank that was having those head motions, but it reminded me of a You Tube clip on the Ed Sullivan show and the dance interpretation of that song. Check it out, it’s really cool. “You’re Listening to American Bandstand” Was that Dick’s salute to beautiful music? Famous and June, well that is “Dancing With the Stars” material and their signature dip. And that song was @dancerdon’ s speed there (just playing with you dancer Don)..

You can tell the dancers are trying to make the best of an Instrumental that went #1 . . . and actually stayed there for several weeks I think. It's awkward for them, I can see that. But hey, like some others were saying, unlike today we have radio stations (and internet) where there's a station for every type of music genre. Back then, everything was crammed into AM radio, until FM Rock broke somewhat away from the Top 40 lists. There were also Adult Contemporary stations (AC) that definitely played this kind of instrumental, but they were geared to other lighter pop music/instrumentals. Some of it crossed over from AC and other AM pop/rock type stations. In the 70s, with disco blossoming or once it got started, at least the instrumentals were more danceable - TSOP - The Sounds of Philadelphia (MFSB), The Hustle, Pick up the pieces, Average White Band, etc.

I turned six years old that year. I loved that song. It was on the radio all the time and it was on the jukebox of the Comeback Inn, where my mother would take my sister and I when we were small. The restaurant (around the city limits of Chicago) had a giant stuffed grizzly bear over the door, and the indoor atmosphere was dark, with peanut shells on the floor. I always think of my mother when I hear it because love was always blue for her.
